Were confederate soldiers terrorists?
cnn.com ^ | 4.11.2010 | Roland S. Martin

Based on the hundreds of e-mails, Facebook comments and Tweets I've read in response to my denunciation of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's decision to honor Confederates for their involvement in the Civil War -- which was based on the desire to continue slavery -- the one consistent thing that supporters of the proclamation offer up as a defense is that these individuals were fighting for what they believed in and defending their homeland.

In criticizing me for saying that celebrating the Confederates was akin to honoring Nazi soldiers for killing of Jews during the Holocaust, Rob Wagner said, "I am simply defending the honor and dignity of men who were given no choice other than to fight, some as young as thirteen."

This arguement about the CW is in the news because there are rumors of another.

I’ll get the popcorn. It ought to be entertaining this boring Monday afternoon to see the simplistic arguments fly from both sides of the Great Free Republican Civil War debate.

Nope. I'm from the North, and if there's any parallel, the North would be closer. The North imposed it's values on the South at the point of a gun.

first, it was about culture and being told what to do with one’s private property.
second, if you want to call the confederates ‘terrorists’ then you’ll need to call the union army ‘dictators.’

Terrorists? No.

The Confederate armed forces, despite individual depredations, didn’t target innocent civilians and didn’t necessarily believe that God (or the Bible) told ‘em to participate in secession.

On the flip side, an argument could be made that segments of the Union army did participate in what could be considered terror-related activities - such as the March thru Georgia.

If I recall, it was the North that targeted the civilians and civilian infrastructure of the South...not the other way around.

Only a complete historical ignoramus could call Confederates terrorists. In other words, just about any CNN reporter, or recent graduate (say since 1968) of the American educational mill.

A far, far better case could be made that Sherman’s Army were terrorists, quite literally. As far as the rare Confederate incursions into the North, there is overwhelming testimony to the courtesy and respectfulness of the Confederate troops. Confederate troops generally only foraged for the minimum necessary rations and supplies, whatever vandalism or criminalty that may have occurred was the exception, not the rule and was certainly not sanctioned by Confederate commanders.

I don’t think it would be unfair to say that not only were Northern civilians treated far better by the Confederates than white Southern civilians were by Northern troops, but they were treated better than black civilians were by Northern troops.

There was no Civil War. There was a War Between the States.

A rather weak attempt at moral relativism by painting the modern day Muslim terrorist who goes out and blows up civilians with the same brush as the Confederate soldier who only wanted to live without the interference of the federal government.

The Democrats are trying to paint the tea party as “violent racists”.

Just remember that they are the violent racists, and their history proves it again and again. Never make the mistake of defending Democrat history. Let them own it, and let them defend it. Don’t make their problem easier by claiming it for yourself.

Slave economics, Jim Crow race repression, lynch mobs, fire hoses, firey crosses and bombed out churches, that is their history. They do everything they can to re-write history, and who can blame them? but its theirs and the best thing we can do is to keep reminding them of it.

Who reads any garbage CNN puts out?

Now they have Roland Martin’s blather to contend with.

Between all the total nut balls on CNN I am not surprised they don’t have very many watchers.

"If you take all of these comments, don't they sound eerily similar to what we hear today from Muslim extremists who have pledged their lives to defend the honor of Allah and to defeat the infidels in the West?"

No jacka$$, Bin Laden and his ilk want to ultimately set up Islamic caliphates wherever Muslims are to impose their religious views on everyone else. If they are defending the honor of Allah, how come most of their victims are fellow Muslims? Martin, you're an idiot and are prime evidence why CNN no longer has an audience...

After reading certain authors—mostlt Thomas DiLorenzo—I see it as a was between the South and the fedgubmint/lincoln—the northern states having very little choice after initial resistance; and some, secession before that.
