Only a complete historical ignoramus could call Confederates terrorists. In other words, just about any CNN reporter, or recent graduate (say since 1968) of the American educational mill.

A far, far better case could be made that Sherman’s Army were terrorists, quite literally. As far as the rare Confederate incursions into the North, there is overwhelming testimony to the courtesy and respectfulness of the Confederate troops. Confederate troops generally only foraged for the minimum necessary rations and supplies, whatever vandalism or criminalty that may have occurred was the exception, not the rule and was certainly not sanctioned by Confederate commanders.

I don’t think it would be unfair to say that not only were Northern civilians treated far better by the Confederates than white Southern civilians were by Northern troops, but they were treated better than black civilians were by Northern troops.

PS: For the most part the Wehrmacht exhibited a higher level of professionalism and honor than many of their adversaries and ignoramus critics. Most of the German war crimes, at least in the West, were committed by the SS and to some extent by poorly trained and lead U.S. troops, often in retaliation for SS outrages. The situation in the East quickly devolved into mutual savagery, admittedly.

Hitler's famous Fuehrerbefehl ordering the German army to act savagely prior to the Ardennes Offensive had very little effect on the behavior of the regular German Army. Hitler hope that the situation in the West would deteriorate into the same kind of savagery as occurred in the East, since the average German soldier knew he was much better off being taken prison by the Western Allies than continuing to fight. Hitler wanted to change that calculus.

Compare Sherman’s “treatment” of southern civilians to Jackson’s treatment of Barbara Fritchie.

Chivalry was [and is] not dead in the hearts of Southern men.

You're kidding, during the invasion of PA in 1863, Rebel troops had to PAY the locals for extra provisions or face punishment! They had to convert their grey backs into green backs and pay the exchange rate to boot!
