Wooden pegs rather than iron spikes held this ship together, like other English ships at the time, Henry said. The wood appears to be live oak, an indicator it could have come from an early Virginia colony, he said.

How interesting! My family is going to the coast this summer - near Wilmington, NC - and I will insist on seeing the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum, even if we have to take a ferry.

I’m not sure how far it is from where we’ll be staying, but I’ll go by myself with the baby if I have to. Even rent a car!
I don’t think the Hunley sells tickets.
TC, Cape Hatteras is quite a hike from Wilmington, even as the crow flies, and you certainly won’t be going in a straight line to get there.
You’d better plan on making a long day of it. Should be a pretty drive, though.
Mrreaganaut and I once traveled across country (from CA to TN) by car to see the Titanic exhibit when it first came out.
Thanks for the link.
Tanks! I think we’re going to Topsail Island, if that’s a place? Or maybe that’s a different house from the one he’s actually rented.
We’ve lived here almost seven years, and I’ve seen almost nothing. It’s pathetic, really.
That’s impressive, but a nice drive, I’m sure, if you didn’t have carsick kids or pets. When I was young, we used to drive from every part of the US to Missouri to my grandparents’ house, so we saw a lot of country.
Nah, we were newly married. We ended up spending 3 months on the road driving around the country and camping in a tent. It was one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. But the whole reason for the trip was the Titanic.
I love shipwrecks.
In Las Vegas, the Luxor is hosting a Titanic exhibit for the next couple of years. It’s really well done. Many impressive artifacts, including that big piece of steel from the side of the ship.
When I was going to the Brunswick County barrier island beaches, I was fond of Sunset Beach, due to the old pontoon bridge you had to take to get there. Felt “away from it all.” Topsail (TOP-suhl) is just above that. You’re much closer to attractions in N. Myrtle there.
I’ve since started going to Emerald Isle, and enjoy renting a house out in the dune field areas east of town, the dunes are mostly grown over with live oaks, palmettos and such, and it actually looks hilly, unusual for NC beaches. The place I always try to get sits atop a dune overlooking the beach with a catwalk down to the beach, up in the 6000’s heading toward Salter Path.
Southport isn’t all that far from Topsail, you’d probably enjoy that old riverfront town on the Cape Fear.
We went to see it and it is worth the trip if you can go.
It is very similar to the exhibit that was in TN. It is a great exhibit, and better than the one at the Queen Mary several years ago although the QM one had some artifacts i had never seen before for since.
Oh! Yes... I’ve been to the exhibit at the Luxor.
I saw the Queen Mary in ... 1973? My grandfather came from Northern Ireland on the Queen Mary, according to the family. In steerage.
I’ll have to ask the NC group what sights to see, after I locate where we’ll be exactly. DP talked about a lot of houses, and I’m not sure which of them he’s rented. Someplace not *too* far from a Wal-mart, I hope.
