PEWAUKEE, Wis., March 17 (UPI) -- Officials in a Wisconsin city that disbanded its police department late last year said officers left behind 58,000 rounds of ammunition.
Pewaukee officials said the Police Department left behind 58,000 rounds of handgun, rifle and shotgun ammunition when it disbanded at the end of 2009, and administrators said they are looking into why so much ammunition was required for a 25-officer force, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday.
"It seems like it is way in excess of what you would need," Mayor Scott Klein said. "It begs the question of why it got up to so much and why would you continue to purchase it."
A Waukesha County sheriff's lieutenant said a department of the city's size would require less than 11,000 rounds of ammunition a year.
However, former police officer Robert Kraemer said the department regularly used about 30,000 rounds per year on four training shoots and much of the leftover ammo was likely from two shoots that were canceled because of budget shortfalls.
City Administrator Tammy LaBorde said officials are working to identify all of the ammunition to get an accurate estimate of value for selling the leftovers. Officials estimated the sale could bring the city up to $14,000.
At 150 rounds a perp it goes fast!
How many perps voted for Obummer. Maybe I don’t have enough ammo.
Doggoneit! Oh, well....I’d like to say that I have almost that much.....but I won’t......
LOL. Thanks for making my slow clock creep toward 5 pm a little brighter.
Just who in the hell at the resale store reported this?
Two words. GARAGE SALE!
If you don’t empty your weapon on’em...you ain’t done your job!
How many weapons does he assume each officer has? I’ll bet they have more than one, and most likely more than one caliber.
wHERE DID THEY GET IT? iF THE FEDS GAVE IT TO THEM FOR A REASON AND THEY ARE NOW CONVERTING IT THEY MAY HAVE A PROBLEM.. dAM THAT KAPS LOCK KEY’
They deserved to be disbanded. What kind of people would leave that much ammo behind instead of getting some range time in their last month?
Oh well, I don’t need it anyway. Lost all my guns when a giant meteor crasher directly through my roof and into the safe. Damndest thing I’ve ever seen. Didn’t hurt nothing else in the house, but melted the safe and contents into a big old blob. Took it out and threw it in the lake.
You know? All my stuff that I usta had got stole! Yessir, stole right outta my basemint!...Yessir...The guns? I think them varmints got them things too!
With 24 officers, that works out to 38 rounds per month per officer. Less than 10 rounds per week. Barney fife rations.
They should just turn them over to Waukesha County which Pewaukee is part of.
“How often do police practice and how much ammo do they use”
The average police officer probably shoots 200 rounds once a year to “qualify”. The vast majority of them are pretty inept and far from experts with firearms.
Some are firearms / shooting enthusiasts that probably would burn up thousands of rounds of ammo if it was available.
I suspect the large amount of ammo was purchased because someone made money available to purchase large amounts of ammo.
Man we must have had the SAME METEOR!
Imagine that!
Did you dump your big old melted blob into the lake too?
Indeed I did. Man, perhaps we are neighbours or something.
