Startling new forensic research has revealed that multicultural Britain is nothing new after discovering black Africans were living in high society in Roman York.
A study of various remains and artefacts from the 4th century at the Yorkshire Museum shows North Africans were living there thousands of years ago.
The most exciting results came from analysis of the so-called 'Ivory Bangle Lady' whose remains were found in 1901 on the city's Sycamore Terrace.
Her skull was found buried with a range of jewellery including jet and elephant ivory bracelets, earrings, pendants and a glass mirror indicating she was wealthy and was of high social status.
The research used modern forensic ancestry assessment to show it was likely she was of North African descent and may have migrated to York from somewhere warmer.

Ping.
Jesse Jackson is going to say that a black discovered the unpopulated British Isles and was the first human being on the island.
Not surprising, the Roman Empire viewed only one thing “Citizen” or “not Citizen” racial and religious views did not matter, for exampel St. Moritz was African in the area of Switzerland.
What I’d like to know is whether or not her front teeth fell out during her life time or were somehow damaged during discovery?
She looks like a former student of my mother’s who went on to become a Broadway and movie star. She played Daddy Warbucks’ private secretary in the 1990s movie version of Annie. Audra McDonald.
Post of the day winner!
Agreed!
Audra McDonald
Anyway, after the Romans pounded Carthago into submission, the whole of North Africa became the bread basket of the Roman Empire - for hundreds of years. By the end of the Roman Empire, it's no surprise citizens from one side of the empire would be found on an opposite side. Slaves could buy their freedom.
And then Jessie with deride Humphrey Bogart for riding the African Queen to her death!
She may have been the wife of a provincial governor or military commander. The Romans liked to create units of mixed origin from all over the Empire to reduce the risk of mutiny. The legions encamped around Hadrian’s Wall north of York were well known to contain Africans and it is likely their blood still runs in British veins.
yes I know my Roman history.
Well looking at the article maybe they did do the call justice. One of things recently coming out of new studies of the ancient world is that people were more mobile then historians had previously thought.
I guess not all UK scientists are as sloppy as the fools at East Anglia.
Excuse me. First line- black Africans.
Second line- north Africans.
These are not interchangeable.
Black Africans - negroid race.
North Africans- Berbers and admixtures
of many ethnic groups for thousands of years.
Maybe the lady in the story just borrowed the her
mistress’s jewelry to play dress up. So what?
One of the more surprising results of genetic studies in Britain is that 16% of present-day Britains white population possess sub-saharn African genes.
The Romans brought black slaves with them. Not surprising, really.
Do you have any references or links on that statement? Are the genes in question really exclusive to sub-Saharan Africa?
The book was published a few years ago and dealt in detail with genetic origins specific to Europeans.
I know I have the book somewhere and will Freep Mail you with the title sometime before Monday. Would that be okay?
That would be fine, thanks. I know there are supposed to be genes all over Europe which originated in the ancient Middle East.
What I find very interesting is that the estimated proportion
of Caucasian genes in U.S. blacks is between 25% to 30%
by some researchers. Yet, so many blacks seem to have such
a dislike for their own white ancestors. This self-loathing
just seems so self defeating to me. This may explain a lot
about Obama and his attitudes.
