Alright my fellow Freepers. Have been offered a 1943 Mosin Nagant as a gift. Will be used for target shooting and deer hunting. I know jack squat about this rifle.
Pluses, minuses, thoughts, advice...
Thanks!

I’ve got one.
An M91/30. Love it.
First time I took it to the range and squeezed the trigger, everyone on the firing line stopped to see who brought the cannon.
Get a cheap slip-on shoulder pad for it. Not only for the recoil, but also because they have short stocks and the extra inch of length from the pad will give you a better fit.

The Germans engineered a lot of quality into their motorized equipment, but they had not planed much for maintenance or recovery in the field. I figure they thought their stuff was made so incredibly well that it would not break down or get shot up.

Arrogance, like not stocking winter clothing/equipment because the Soviets would fold fast.

Got a '33 Tula Jackhammer, myself. It quite possibly sent several of my Germanic blood ancestors off to Valhalla in the course of wending it's way into my temperamentally-questionable hands.

If Hitler would have left war up to his generals, German would now be the language of use in Siberia, and maybe a lot of other places.

Yup.
Arthur's Hall Of Viking Manliness. And a tip o' the horns to dynachrome for being a bird dog and pinging me on that. 'Tula Jackhammer'. 'Baltic Flamethrower'. I love it.
I gotta get another one. Or two. And another can of ammo. Or three.

If I had that kind of ammo I'd fulminate against it.

Guys who have had Mosin Nagants for awhile have experienced the wonders of Eastern European, surplus ammo. I bought a few cases of the stuff without knowing what it was, looks like galvanized steel cases. It is great for learning not to flinch, and good for plinking. Years ago a friend of mine who was big into competitive, bench rest shooting used something similar to train young shooters. It may have been the same stuff.

I have both a 1943 Mosin-Nagant M91/30 and a 1945 M44 (well, the latter is my son's, but with these stupid gun laws). I love them both, hunt and shoot with them often. Berdan-primed (corrosive) ammo is cheap, but I also reload my own in nice Boxer-primed cases from Prvi Partisan and Seller & Beloit (sp?).
Get a butt pad for the stock; it kicks a lot. I also enjoy the aftermarket Mojo sight I put on my 91/30. My M44 has a bent bolt, so I'm thinking of putting a scope on it.

I see folks blathering about how "hard" it recoils.
BS. (IMHO).
The 7.62x54R cartridge is roughly equivalent to the .30 '06. I have both an M91-30 (rifle) and an M44 (carbine). I shoot them both in "as issued" condition. In the summer. Wearing a t-shirt. < shrug > It's not a .22LR; it's not a .500 Ridiculous.
It's reasonably accurate (2-3MOA, better if it's a sniper model), and ammo is reasonably cheap. Most ammo is steel case, not reloadable, and some is corrosive. Reloading components are available from all the usual suspects, and data are in all the manuals.
I like them.
Plenty of info on the web. I like http://www.mosinnagant.net

Haven’t fired it yet. I have an AK, too. And a few others. Hopefully I will be mobile by April.
