Black Harvard professor donates handcuffs

Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. said he donated the handcuffs used on him during his arrest last year outside his home to the Smithsonian Institution's black history museum.
Gates said in Sunday's edition of The New York Times Magazine that he donated the handcuffs to the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

How come he actually has the handcuffs? Are they a souvenir of arrest?Per the article, the arresting officer, Sgt. Crowley, gave them to him. Of all the stupid idiotic things to do. Ahhhh, kumbayah and hugs everyone!!! Hope he at least paid the department and taxpayers back for them.

Sgt. Crowley gave the cuffs to Gates in a later meeting after 'beer summit'. Perhaps his symbolic gesture was not meant to be exploited.
