Weekly Gardening Thread
I hope all of you will stop by.
This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.
If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.
we had a tornado tear thru here yesterday afternoon...all the neighbors’ lawn chairs and toys and whatnot were in my friends’ yard this morning. Then a tree branch hit their transformer at 1am...they didn’t sleep real well, I guess...
Just checking in. I’ll be back later. I’m still looking for those directions on how to plant potatoes in a bucket, or right on top of the ground.
Brr, wish I could think gardening, but it has been a fairly chilly winter (not much snow though). Not as bad as some parts of the country, but our January thaw barely got above freezing this year.
BUMP for after chores. :)
Please add me to the PING list.
Just got my Territorial seed company catalog and was making up my wish list....
I can’t wait. It’s hard to believe that Jan is almost over, though. It sure seems to have flown by and I’m expecting Feb to do the same as we have a lot of activity in our lives to tick off.
I’m only going to plant a few things in the ground because we are trying to sell our house. I’ll have a lot more containers this year so I can take them with me. Is that mean? :0) I’ll put in just enough to show them the potential of the garden area but I don’t want to leave it all behind.
Hey! Raining here...AGAIN! At least it’s warmer and we didn’t get the 20” some of our more southern neighbors got. Still...awash. Please don’t send any more rain this way! LOL
We got the greenhouse recovered and started cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, chard, pak choi, spinach, etc. Late for us, I know, but it’s been too cold and it’s still too wet. Looks like it’s going to be a cold, wet spring. Got our onion sets in and most of our seeds. No taters yet but they should be in soon. Already had some of the old guys fussing cause we don’t have any plants ready yet. Not sure what they think they’re going to do with them.... LOL
Will start maters and peppers and some flowers/herbs in the next week or so. And hanging baskets and... Roses will be in about mid Feb. Rest time is over for me! For the next 5 months or so, it’s all uphill from here!
The seeds I’ve ordered have started coming in. Yesterday I got a package from Baker Creek, according to the invoice it was packed on my birthday!
I think it shows how excited I am about the garden this year, I kept picking up the package of seeds and shaking it just to hear them rattle :p
Spring is still a long way off for the Colorado Rockies. I will put potatoes out in early May and other plants early to mid June. The front moving through is causing snow as it moves over the continental divide. I can see snow about 3 miles to the west, but none here yet. About a foot of snow on the ground.
I get itchy to play in some dirt about this time of year, when spring is still so far off, so I like to do some winter sowing. Some of you may have already heard of the winter sowing method ... planting seeds in milk jugs and other recyclables, with lids off and drainage holes in the bottom, and putting them outside in the elements. It is great for seeds that need cold stratification, and I’ve also had great success with hardy annuals and cool weather veggies. Here are some informational links, if anyone is interested:

Cornell University--New 'lily' Tangerine Tango can jazz up summer gardens
A beautiful woman loved growing tomatoes, but couldn’t seem
to get her tomatoes to turn red. One day, while taking a stroll,
she came upon a gentleman neighbor who had the most
beautiful garden full of huge red tomatoes.
The woman asked the gentlemen,
“What do you do to get your tomatoes so red?”
The gentlemen responded, “Well, twice a day I stand in front
of my tomato garden naked in my trench coat and flash them.
My tomatoes turn red from blushing so much.”
Well, the woman was so impressed; she decided to try
doing the same thing to her tomato garden to see if
it would work. So twice a day for two weeks she
flashed her garden hoping for the best.
One day the gentleman was passing by and asked the woman,
“By the way, how did you make out? Did your tomatoes turn red?”
No”, she replied,
“but my cucumbers are enormous.”
