We felt a small one in 2007 in North Alabama; we are definitely part of the New Madrid fault. I remember we had just moved in to our new house, so it must have been August or September 2007. If I recall correctly, it was just a magnitude 3+.

Exactly my thinking. For the past 1.5 million years climate change has taken place at various intervals. The automobile nor the coal industry have been around that long.

If the world comes to an end....for what ever reason, that is God’s plan!

A pair of major New Madrid quakes a few weeks apart (like in 1811-1812) are the setup for my third novel.

The long excerpt on the website goes into it. In short, all of the major bridges over the Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers in the region collapse. The area between Nashville, St. Louis and Little Rock is devastated, but Memphis and Western Tennessee are the worst off.

At the start of the novel, it's one year after the two New Madrid earthquakes. Battalions of foreign peackeepers are occupying Tennessee, at the invitation of the President.

Phil Carson, (from "Enemies Foreign And Domestic"), and three strangers are hiding in a well-stocked cave, which is a guerrilla fighter's lair. Across the region Kazakh "contract peacekeepers" are wiping out the last remaining American holdouts, who have rejected the federal government's order to abandon their homes and move to "relocation centers."

If the New Madrid fault lets go with a big one, 8.0 or larger, the USA is in for a WORLD of hurt.

Basically, everything from Springfield, IL to New Orleans and from Central Tennessee to Kansas is going to be down and out.

Kansas City would be hurt but still standing.

The main interior artery of the USA, the Mississippi River would, in all likely hood, not be navigable for a long period of time by anything but a small sport boat, maybe a pontoon boat.

Bridges over the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, etc rivers would be down, including railroad bridges.

Travel disrupted through the center of the country, I-80 might still be open, but just about everything but air travel.

Good luck if it ever happens, we'll all need it.
