I worked retail for a lot of years at a store with a ton of really annoyingly loud novelty items -clocks, dolls, all kinds of useless junk (I can still hear that stupid chicken “Yeeeeeeeeeah, baby, time to to get up!”)- and I got REALLY good at tuning out annoying background noise. ;-) Was the store Spencer's Gifts? I tried to think of the most annoying store I've ever been in and that's it, LOL

It is a way to overcome them not being to hold a note. As are runs and vamping.
My standard complaint year in, year out, is that no one can just sing notes — it is like doing a jump shot in the NBA. To make up for the lack of skill, they go for the slam dunk showboat shot.
