In the spirit of the current thread "Best Films of all Time?", I just have to ask for the other end of the spectrum.
I don't mean "Night of the Lupus", "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", or other standard bad/forgettable films. I don't mean just box-office flops. I want to see tour-de-force bad.
‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’ got a lot of attention as ‘The Worst Film of All Time’ thanks a bit to Michael Medved and his brother who anointed it as such in their book, ‘The Golden Turkey Awards.’
The fact is, it’s not really as bad as its reputation suggests.
The worst movie I have ever seen, by far, is ‘Manos: The Hands of Fate.’ It makes Plan 9 look like Citizen Kane.
We are deep into MST3K territory here, gentlemen.
“You have failed us, Torgo.”
The only movie I've ever walked out on halfway through.
Stupid plot, terrible photography and nasty characters.
That one qualifies. And if we are going to give it honorable mention I guess we should include the comment from it's star Jeff Morrow on the movie.
We shot the film before we ever got a look at this monster that was supposed to be so terrifying. The producers promised us that the special effects would be first class. The director - Fred F. Sears - just told us, All right, now you see the bird up there, and youre scared to death! Use your imagination. But the first time we actually got to see it was the night of the premiere. The audience couldnt stop laughing. We were up there on screen looking like idiots, treating this silly buzzard like it was the scariest thing in the world. We felt cheated, thats for sure, but they told us afterward that they just ran out of money. They couldnt afford anything but this stupid puppet. But it was just terrible. I was never so embarrassed in my whole life. - Jeff Morrow recalling the filming and screening of The Giant Claw (1957).
Do yourself a favor and set aside some time to read Dune, it's a great book. It will take a while due to length but it's worth it. The movie is incomprehensible compared to the book.
As for worst movies of all time, I nominate Ishtar, Waterworld, Mad Max and my all-time love/hate movie, Plan Nine From Outer Space.
Ishtar is one of the poster children of bad movies. Waterworld isn't good but it isn't the worst movie, imo. Mad Max appeared to be a pretty small budget film, so it wasn't bad for the money spent on it, probably the same with Plan Nine From Outer Space...although it's not watchable. Some have pointed out Highlander II while a few others are attempting to forget it even exists...but it was detestable.
Hah! as if Burt Reynolds could save any movie. He comes across as a down to earth guy so might be fun to hang with, but he couldn't act his way out of a kindergarten play.
The Giant Spider Invasion. (MST3K...PAACKERS!!!””)
The Stuff.
And, yeah. Highlander 2 did suck. Even Sean Connery and Michael Ironside couldn’t save it.
Americathon ... with John Ritter
The World According to Garp ... with Robin Williams
Philadelphia ... with Tom Hanks
Tonight I forsook watching the rest of that creepy movie and decided to freep. I wouldn’t put it at the worst movies ever, though. I suppose it’s because I had no expectations of it whatsoever.
But “A Serious Man” is terrific.
There was one about a pickle; but I can’t remember the name of it. It was HORRIBLE—and not in a good way.
Gigli
Gack!!!
U.S. Box Office: $45,570
We bought it from a bargain bin, and we waz robbed.
Bookmark for when I stop laughing...
Eraserhead - Hands down worst ever...
Yeah that was a late ‘70s movie (the bad guy blasts a “Star Wars” poster at one point). Terrible. “Mystery Science Theater 3000” did a great job trashing it in their 7th season. They also give Leonard Maltin a lot of grief for his (I think) 3-star rating for the film.
Destroyed the careers of his female co-stars:
Jeanne Tripplehorn, formerly in The Firm and Basic Instinct was sunk by Waterworld
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, formerly in Scarface, faded after Robbin Hood
fortunately the female lead in The Postman did not have a major career to lose.
