SYDNEY — A space-age powerboat sent to harass Japanese whalers was rammed and sliced in two in its very first clash on Wednesday, activists said, dramatically escalating hostilities in icy Antarctic seas.
The futuristic Ady Gil trimaran, which holds the round-the-world record and was enlisted by militant activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for this whaling season, received "catastrophic damage" and was sinking, they said.
All six crew, who earlier hurled stink bombs at the whalers to disrupt their annual hunt, were rescued unharmed by Sea Shepherd's Bob Barker ship. Activists described the attack as unprovoked and said it was captured on film.
"The Shonan Maru No. 2 suddenly started up and deliberately rammed the Ady Gil ripping eight feet (2.4 metres) of the bow of the vessel completely off," a Sea Shepherd statement said.

Amen to that. These dirtbags would put you out of work too.

What was that line from “Risky Business”:
“In a sluggish economy, never ever f-— with another man’s livelihood.”
“Powered vessels are supposed to give way to sail powered vessels ~ presumably an aircraft carrier should yield to a sunfish sailboat but they rarely do ~ it’s the maneuverability thing.”
Wrong! The burdened vessel ALWAYS has the right of way. And that applies to all boats, ships, dingies, all water craft regardless of motive power. Sail boat vs container ship = sail boat yields.
An aircraft carrier is NOT more maneuverable than a sunfish sailboat. Measure an aircraft carrier’s turning radius - most of a kilomenter - measure a sunfish sail boat’s radius - several meters. The sunfish is the more maneuverable and thus the carrier is the burdened vessel and has the right of way.
That was then. This is now.
You get into as many quibbles over "burdened" and "nonburdened" as you do "sail" and "powered".
As I noted, aircraft carriers are not terribly maneuverable ~ and that applies whether or not they are "burdened" or are just empty hulks being towed to scrap.
Sailboats of any size are certainly not safe around them.
Ever challenge a barge on the Ohio with a rooster tail?
Heh-heh!
“Ever challenge a barge on the Ohio with a rooster tail?”
No but watched sail boarder challenge a container ship for right of way in the shipping lanes - guess who lost...
“You get into as many quibbles over “burdened” and “nonburdened” as you do “sail” and “powered”.”
As a matter of maritime law thare are no quibbles on this issue. Only among tupperware owners on the yacht club docks is such lunacy heard.
Carriers are always the burdened vessel - there is no time when they are not, regardless of their motive status. When being towed the status goes to be tug, not the carrier. Ever watch a tupperware owner try to cross beteen tug and tow?
Spent 30 years at sea.
Consider all of the resources consumed by whales during their lifetime, and for what? If we are to be saved from global warming, we need to encourage the Japanese to remove as many of these CO2 generators as possible from our ecosystem. Mother Earth demands no less!
That has the makings of a great "Epic Fail" graphic.
Whatever, the Japanese had right of way ~ the other guys purposely pulled in front of them.
I'd paid good money to have seen it.
I'd like him a lot better if he were hanging from a yard-arm.
He's a pirate.
All six crew, who earlier hurled stink bombs at the whalers to disrupt their annual hunt, were rescued unharmed by Sea Shepherd's Bob Barker ship. Activists described the attack as unprovoked and said it was captured on film.
So they deliberately harass the whalers, throw stink bombs at them and do other unspecified things with which to interfere with the whalers doing their job but still claim the attack was unprovoked.
Libs, no brain required to be one.
The law of gross tonnage cannot be repealed.
I always thought the "burdened vessel" was the "give way vessel."
Actually, Paul Watson/Sea shepherd was kicked out of GreenPeace.
That’s bad when you get kicked out of Green Peace.
What did you call it when Paul Watson’s boat rammed
the Canadian Goast Guard ship years ago off Canadian waters?
The protestors have been known to fly skull-and-crossbones flags while harassing whalers. If they were doing so during this incident (not confirmed, but not denied either), I’d say it was a declaration of intent reasonably met.
You know...I get really sick of hypocrisy and ignorance.
First off...whales are animals. They are no more...or no LESS important intellectually than a pig...as pigs are actually pretty smart. So...unless you are a vegan...and don't eat meat. PERIOD...your point is hypocritical. If you are a vegan...and are a vegan because of the reason animals are people too (and not just because you made a health choice)...you are a godless human being...because God gave dominion over animals to man. Whales are animals.
Second....and more to the point. Attempted murder? Are you KIDDING? I watch Whale Wars...matter of fact...my entire immediate family makes a point to DVR it and usually watch it after it airs. The Sea Shepherd Society make their LIVING off of 1) picking a fight and then crying to the press when the whalers defend themselves...and 2) Following Alinky's Rules for Radicals.
They did this last season. They RAMMED a harpoon ship and then called every media outlet that would listen...telling a tale about how they whalers had tried to kill them. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! They do this all the time. They pick a fight...then cry bloody murder when the whalers fight back. they throw glass bottles at them...then scream like heck when the whalers throw stuff back. They represent typical liberalism: My rules and your rules are NOT equal. I will play by My rules...and you must play by a different set of rules. If you violate those rules...I will use the media to hammer you. That's why we watch the show. It's a glaring example of the tactics used by liberals and socialists.
And to top it all off...YOU call it attempted murder? Seriously?
I've got a question for you...and I want you to answer it honestly. Your boat is in the Southern OCEAN...and its heavy seas. Knowing that STEERING and POWER are all important to the preservation of LIFE aboard your ship in heavy seas...especially in very cold waters (because vessels left adrift...powerless...in the Oceans get capsized easily)...what do YOU call it when another vessel INTENTIONALLY tries to foul your props with ropes in the hopes of tangling your propellers and killing your engines thousands of miles away from any help?
What do YOU call that? You see...the Sea Shepherds don't call it attempted murder. Now...they will call a Ship hitting them (when in fact they are ramming them first) attempted murder...but they won't call it attempted murder when they are intentionally trying to kill a vessels engines and then leave that vessel powerless in the Southern Ocean...which would lead to its capsizing...and the death of dozens on board.
What do you call it?
Look at the arm of the starboard pylon (nearest in the picture shown in response 1). Skull and crossbones .. well, skull and crossed tridents anyway ...
It couldn’t have been a Kennedy at the helm, I think the Captain was awake.
