New Device Makes Guns More Accurate
Live Science ^ | Dec 11, 2009 | LiveScience Staff

A new technology may make it easier for gun owners to improve their marksmanship.

Opti-sight, a new pistol-aiming device, was developed to reduce the time law enforcement, professional and amateur shooters need for target practice to get better results at the firing range.

Typically, shooters use an optical device known as a "sight" to take aim before firing on a target. Traditional pistol sight designs rely on a square post mounted on the front of the gun's barrel that is visually centered inside a notch on the back of the barrel. Shooters use the two pieces to align the barrel with the target when firing. This method, saysTimothy Kraft, an associate professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who designed the device, takes considerable time to master as the brain must work to reconcile inconsistencies seen through the notch, post and target.

"The way a traditional gunsight works is all very disconnected," Kraft said. "In order to get a good shot off you have to visually scan the gap between the front post and rear sight on the left and equalize that to the gap on the right, then align all that with the center of the target. It is too much for the eye and brain to process."

I don’t believe it with Kari on maternity leave.

I'm so depressed... First Megyn Kelly, now Kari!

She was still there for that episode, so it must be true, right? Grant’s the brains in that outfit anyway. Kari’s just eye candy for the geeks to drool over.

Most guns ARE accurate. It’s the shooter who needs training.

You certainly got that right! And with enough training and practice, it's amazing what you can do with "minimal sights."

Many years ago, I was shooting a Taurus PT-99 in a USPSA competition. Midway through my run, I noticed that something had changed, but couldn't really say what it was. I finished the run, and as I was making my handgun safe, I noticed that the rear sight was missing! The roll pin that held it to the slide had worked its way loose and fallen out, as did the rear sight blade. But I was so focused on the front sight that I never noticed.

You would really want a laser sight that is also a range finder. Once target is acquired, the laser quickly moves to compensate for distance and bullet drop for pre programed firearm/ballistics combination, so that any distance is Point Blank Range.

I instead opted for a V notch and a gold bead on a Redhawk.

"Actually, it'd be pretty easy to get the same effect with a two-beam laser sight."

What if you hold your gun sideways?

You’re a tad warmer there than we are here. Woke up to a brisk 5 degrees this morning. Frost in the horses’ whiskers.

And thanks for your service!

Ah, you're only worried about image then, anyways.... accuracy is strictly secondary... ;-)

Wait a minute! My front sight is round! I gotta telescopic sight too- I don`t need no stinkin metal bridges stickin up in the way. Plus every North Country mountain boy already knows how to arc a 30-30 from the hip without any sights, just like throwin a football thru a tire at 50 yards. You sight `em, we bite`em!

The solution is to take the human out of the aiming process. Remove the gun from the hand and transfer it to a gyrostabilized, servo-actuated shoulder mount. This is in turn connected by cable to a control glove worn on the user’s index finger. When the enemy comes within range, the user simply points their finger at the enemy and raises his or her thumb to the up position. Electronics within the control glove activate a laser target designator built into the glove which paints the target. At the same time, signals from the glove cause the weapon to chamber a round. Sensors on the weapon mount then swivel the weapon to track the target using the IR laser pings. When the user lowers his or her thumb in the classic “bang-bang” motion, a signal is sent to the weapon’s trigger and a round is fired. The gyrostabilized servo platform ensures a hit at whatever point the IR laser is pointing.

An even better solution would be to have a personal UAV that follows the user around. This UAV would mount both the targeting laser sensors and the weapon and would be controlled by the user via a secure wireless link. When under attack, the user would use the control glove to designate targets, which would then be plinked by the UAV. (Cops and other persons could be designated with IR reflectors woven into their uniforms so that the UAV’s firing system software would know not to shoot them.)

Perhaps you can help. I recall seeing a small device that basically placed a small divot in the tip of a .22LR round to enhance accurancy. Know anything about it or where one might acquire it?

What’s the scam? Took a look at the website and the SureSight seems like a pretty good idea, actually. If the trit version glows like it does in the picture, struck me as pretty innovative.

What struck me as odd is that they’re claiming the sight has to be compatible with a specific model of gun. You don’t cut into the slide to install? Or, are they advertising something that just doesn’t exist (hence, the massive order backlog)?
