ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Yes, fellow citizens, that tall man you saw Tuesday night promenading around State Circle in Annapolis while wearing a blue and buff lieutenant general's uniform and a sword was none other than George Washington.

The commanding officer of the Continental Army and first president of the United States was here to visit the town where, as a young man in the mid-1700s, he enjoyed all kinds of sporting events - and lost substantial sums at the horse races and gaming tables.

"Reynolds Tavern," he said at one point while standing on the steps of St. Anne's Church. "It is all coming back to me now."

"I do remember being enamored with this town from the get and go," he said, looking around.

Before touring downtown, Washington - really Dean Malissa, a Philadelphia-based actor and the official George Washington interpreter at Mount Vernon - spent the afternoon with some students from Annapolis Elementary School.

Standing in the Old Senate Chamber at the State House, where Washington resigned his commission two days before Christmas in 1783, Washington took the group of about 40 students back more than 200 years, to the founding of this, the world's first democratic republic.

He told them what it felt like to be forced to commit armed rebellion against his mother country, Great Britain.

He told them what it felt like to be forced to commit armed rebellion against his mother country, Great Britain.

Sounds like he's looking for another tea party.

Thank goodness! A refreshing contrast to all of the Benedict Arnolds in congress!
