WASHINGTON (Reuters) Villagers in the highlands of Papua New Guinea who ritualistically ate human brains but did not die of a brain disease called kuru have a genetic mutation that protects them, researchers said Wednesday.
Their study of the unusual cannibalistic practice shows evolution in real time in the human population, and might lead to a treatment for similar brain-wasting conditions, the researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Kuru once wiped out entire generations of women in remote Papuan villages. It was traced to a now-defunct mortuary ceremony in which women and children ate the brains of their dead relatives.
Dr Simon Mead of the University College London Institute and colleagues found that women in these communities were more likely to live to an old age if they had the protective gene. Women without the gene died young of kuru.

Brain food ping.
SCRAMBLED BRAINS
1/4 lb. Democrat brains... tough to find.
1 1/2 tsp. vinegar
3/4 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. butter
4 beaten eggs
1 tbsp. milk
Cover brains with cold water, add vinegar, and soak for 30 minutes. Drain. Remove loose fatty membrane. Cover brains with water, add 1/2 teaspoon salt, and simmer 20 to 30 minutes. Drain and chill in cold water. Finely chop brains. Brown in butter. Combine eggs, milk, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add to brains. Turn heat low.
Don’t disturb mixture until it starts to set on bottom and sides, then lift and fold over with wide spatula so uncooked part goes to bottom. Avoid breaking up eggs any more than necessary. Continue cooking for 5 to 8 minutes, until eggs are cooked throughout, but still glossy and moist.
Remove from heat and serve immediately.
Serves 4.
Oh, I forgot. It takes 6 democrats to come up with 1/4 pound of brains, so don’t be wasteful.
Gator! Why’d ya have that recipe?
Everybody needs a hobby. LOL
Neuro nibblers.
I was thinking of Anthony Hopkins slicing away Ray Liotta’s brain in the sequel to Silence of the Lambs.
That redhead is probably neanderthal.
This is not evolution, but natural selection. Poorly written article. If they ate the brains and turned into a lizard, that would be evolution. They still remain human if they have the gene. This just perpetuates the illusions people believe in.

Great! No mad cow disease BUT you have Human Brain Eating Disease instead.
I wonder if that is an improvement?
I wonder if brains are fish food?
