Exhibition explores Vandal legacy
The Local ^ | Oct 23, 2009 | Unknown

Being billed as the most comprehensive exhibition about the Vandal civilisation ever, a new show about the notorious Germanic tribe opens on Friday at Baden's state museum in Karlsruhe.

The word “vandal” these days is associated with acts of senseless violence and destruction. However, this new exhibition explores the history behind the actual Vandals, a Germanic civilisation that stretched across Eastern Europe to North Africa in the 5th century. "The Vandal Kingdom" hopes to offer visitors a new perspective on this unfamiliar culture and infamous word.

>

Despite the Vandals' terrible reputation, Wenzel said the violence they administered across much of Europe was "no worse than other migrating tribes.”

The issue is that the ATMs of the day were of a different technology.

As Bobby Zimmerman said, “the pump don’t work ‘cause the Vandals took the handle.”

What a coinkydink...just last night via Netflix I watched a 90 minute History Channel show (no ads though!) on my 'puter called "The Dark Ages." Mainly about Justinian, Clovis, Martel, Charlemagne, the bubonic plague, the Vikings, monks, etc. The Vandals did get a shout-out though.

Great program...highly reccomended.

Stilicho was half-Vandal (his father was a Vandal and his mother a Roman). He was an important figure in the reigns of Theodosius I and Honorius, and might have been able to prevent the Goths' capture of Rome in 410 if Honorius had not had him killed in 408. A very controversial figure.

I believe Andalucia in southern Spain is named for the Vandals, who ruled there before crossing into Africa.

Vadal legacy?

This used to be (IIRC) a hospital in San Fransicko:

More legacy:

More Vandal legacy: Luddites, ELF, ALF....

Now, if they had said legacy of the Vandal Kingdom...

Wenzel said the violence they administered across much of Europe was "no worse than other migrating tribes.”

The real legacy of the Vandals: "Why are you picking on me? Everybody else does it!"

I was going to quip about the photo being a Vandal hot tub, but from the symbols and my limited Latin I think that was an early baptismal font.

Wow, I'd love to see this exhibit. It looks like they've managed to bring together a lot of artifacts from the Vandal Christian kingdom in North Africa.
