Nightmares comes true as grizzly bear mauls sleeping hunters
Vancouver Sun ^ | 10/18/2009 | Katie Mercer

It's every hunter's worst nightmare.

You've nestled into your tent for the night when you're awakened by the sound of a bear charging. Within seconds it's on you, teeth sinking into flesh as you fight for your life.

"I went into survival mode as she batted me around, biting me," Ken Scown, 36, said Saturday. "I was kind of waiting for the bite to the head and neck and it would all be over."

Scown and his pal Jeff Herbert were three days into an 11-day hunting trip near Canal Flats in the East Kootenays region of B. C. when a grizzly attacked them Wednesday night.

The bear — believed to be a sow — charged the tent as the experienced hunters from Nelson scrambled to sit up.

Within seconds it was on top of Scown as Herbert struggled to get a round into his rifle.

The grizzly was "thrashing wildly" as Herbert tried to shove it off his pal to clear a shot. He pulled the trigger only to hear a click — the shell wasn't properly in the chamber.

"I was screaming so hard and yelling at Jeff to shoot the bear, shoot it," Scown recalled. "I couldn't hear much else other than my heartbeat pounding through my chest."

The bear tore through the tent before Hebert managed to get free and chase it away.***

The men hiked nearly five kilometres back to their trucks, where they could see bear tracks that indicated two animals had been following them that day. "It was totally a predatory attack and not a defensive attack because there was no threat," Herbert said. "Unfortunately we were on the menu that night."

Saw that vid. They said it was a 600 Nitro out of a custom TC. Probably not much difference though.

Santa Clause needs a lighter firepower pistol as do the women in the pictures.

Does anyone make a similiar pistol or deringer in a 44 mag?

Thanks for your response, yank. Many of us hunt and enjoy the outdoors, wildlife and scenery and don’t experience all the “danger”. Our family lives on what we kill ... not because we *have* to, but because that is our desire and enjoyment. Sad that we have those that seem to look down their noses at us because we don’t rely on the grocery store for our survival, especially when they are holding themselves out to be conservative.

And for the ultimate small gun, the true Derringer. Classic styling and design Similar to the design you’d expect Doc Holiday to have playing card in Tombstone Arizona. Can you shoot .44 magnum out of these 2-shot classics? Ouch. Reports of shooting the .357 out of a light-alloy snub-nose revolver tell of discomfort. I can’t imagine the horror of shooting .44 mag out of this. Though they have a certain amount of HEFT. These things look and feel solid in the hand. At least. Nice piece of machining work. The ones I’ve seen. But murder on the hands in any sizeable caliber.

"Exactly why I sleep with a cocked .454 Casull in my hand."

I'm not sure which is more stupid ... sleeping with a cocked gun in your hand, or proudly professing it on a public forum.

Doesn't matter, he's in the running for a Darwin award.

Thanks for the pings.

Sounds like it was a Keystone Kop episode and lucky neither of them was really hurt, thankfully they weren’t. Hopefully they learned from it that they keep loaded weapons in the tent in bear country.

Your info on camping in grizzly and brown bear country is good info, Yank. It’s always good to hear from FReepers that have first hand experience on whatever subject is being discussed.

I find it somewhat disappointing that there are always some who chime in that if a hunter is hurt it’s their own fault because it’s a dangerous sport.

There are many people in Alaska and a fair number in Canada that hunt not for the sport but to put meat on the table. I suppose if one of them are hurt by an animal they’d feel differently about the person being hurt. I for one don’t feel that way about anyone getting hurt in any sport because for the most part they have the courage to not live in a glass bubble.

LOL! Now that’s funny.

I guess if someone told Santa to hold tight he didn’t believe them.

Aptly named, you are.

Not to catch that it was a pretty obvious joke when you first read it, nor the multiple times that I told others that it was in jest, afterwards .

Obviously I'm too subtle in my jesting. I guess I'm going to have to label such posts with a big
JUST KIDDING
from now on.

Sheesh, Freepers used to be quick to pick up on stuff like that.

I'm just embarrassed that I didn't take it one step further, and show this photo:

Then it would have been even more obviously a raging COCK and BULL story.

People gotta learn to not accept everything they read on the internet as absolute truth. Lots of lies. Lots of 'snark', which is my usual mode. Heck, even my user name is a good signal that I may be messing with people.

Google "Cargill Meats" along with "NAIS". If after realizing what's happening, a person can still buy meat at the supermarket and feel good about it, they're either too stupid to comprehend, or apathetic... which seems to describe a majority of America lately. :-)

It's not about food. It's about control.
