Thanks. That might be just the thing we needed. We’d probably go through ‘em pretty quick ‘cause I’m not going to take them on and off every time he has to go out. But still, not a bad idea.

We’re also planning to add some carpet remnants around.

Heh...not hardly. Watching the path of Earl though. Lots of people we know have property on the OBX.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I’m going to try just putting them on Gypsy’s rear feet and see if that provides enough traction to get her up. That would double the life....

Corin - how could they have missed ‘The Epic Threads’ sigh.

If you’re heading to the beachhouse for Labor Day, SURF’S UP. Take your long board. :-)

Cute, but it looks like a lot of added weight towards the muzzle. The nice thing is that as an add-on, you can put it on imported weapons without worrying about 922r rules.

Now all I need is a longer barrel, and this gizmo. I wonder if anyone will use this as part of short-barrel shotgun?

A little Friday fill-in:

First, the adjustable stock (I will not call it "folding" in Michigan), arrived today for my Bushmaster ACR. No more bumps from the scope, even though I found a rubber eye cup for it. Just another case where I wind up putting a short, compact scope on a rifle with a mile of unused rail.

This is still a solid, heavy carbine, but it has become much more handy now.

More range reports when time permits, but September is "preparedness month", and I thought I'd kick in a few ideas that you won't find in the government manuals. For the federal agencies monitoring this, feel free to use any of my ideas when updating your manuals.

One of the minor details that might pose major problems is packaging "stuff" so you can be prepared. Packing density is one thing to consider. Having a jar of popcorn in your kit is one thing, taking the time to pop a garbage bag-full of popcorn is another. The same applies to the luxuries of life you don't want to leave behind, like ammunition.

The plastic drybox on the left has 500 rounds of commercial .308 FMJ ammo in it. I threw out the individual boxes, and trimmed off the belt loops from the plastic holders. This is a fairly dense "intermediate" level of packaging that didn't take much effort. Everything is quiet and easy to handle.

On the right is 1000 rounds of the same ammo. I went through all the work of stripping the rounds out of its commercial packaging, and loading them onto those proprietary chicom stripper clips. It's packed twice as dense, and weighs more than I want to think. Aside from packing density, it's also vey easy now to use the loader in the can to charge H&K, M14, and AR10 magazines.

So for preparedness purposes, pack stuff as densely as you can, and still be mobile with it. Your mileage may vary.

I ordered the Power Paws Wednesday evening and they came in the mail today! I’ve just put them on Gypsy’s back paws; she hasn’t fussed with them and they’ve really helped. She is a little puzzled why she isn’t slipping all over the floor. She braces for a slide that doesn’t occur.

We did some major gardening today. Took out every other Black-eyed Stella d’oro, so we could divide and replant the ones that are left. We put the ~discard~ lilies on a tarp with a sign that said “ FREE - Plants To Good Home”. We must have had 10-12 huge daylilies and within a couple of hours they were gone. Hurrah!

I double-dug parts of two raised beds and planted some lettuce, radishes, spinach, collards, beets, turnips, and chard. Did a little puttering around the house during the Cubs game.

*Sigh* I think UNC’s strategy is to wear out their opponent’s offense.

Did you plant seeds or have starts from inside? There just really isn’t enough sun in the back or side yard, but if I gave up part of the daylily bed I could have a small garden...except our newcat thinks every freshly dug spot is expressly for his use.

I planted seeds. I’m planning on building a cold frame over them with pvc pipe, chicken wire and plastic just to see how far I can extend the season.

This is still a solid, heavy carbine, but it has become much more handy now.

After finishing my sight-in, I tried putting holes in paper at 50 yards, the range's maximum. I'm hoping my use of Nanolube on the trigger will improve things, or someone comes up with a unitized match trigger.

As things stand now, I can hold the trigger pull at its second "stop" of seven pounds. This then lets me take the shot with some chance of accuracy when pressure reaches eight pounds. However, it really wrecks my concentration.

This is what I was able to do using the technique with one 30-round magazine. The two fliers are a result of me getting bored with this rather involved method of shooting.

I hope I can improve on these modest experts with a better trigger.

Eight pound trigger on the ACR?! Sheesh.... I certainly HOPE the NanoLube helps!... or that somebody comes up with a better trigger you can replace it with!

The trigger pull is slowly coming down, which is one way of telling that the Nanolube is working. The trigger mechanism is plain ol' garden-variety AR15, which is very much of a known quantity as far as tweaking goes. It just comes in a handy package, as shown here:

I managed to install a custom target trigger on the left, but there was no room for the plastic lever on top which acts as a detent for the selector, and also is key for removing the unit. One leg of the factory hammer spring is bent outward to power the takedown lever, and the right side of the trigger axle is trimmed a bit on the right to make room for that lever.

Rather than experiment, I'll wait and see what the "trigger upgrade" is that is mentioned on the Remington military site, but not on the Bushmaster site. Remington military sales take priority over civilian stuff, including more accessories.

I've had worse trigger pulls on new AR15s than this, and I expect this one to continue to improve with break-in and Nanolube. It's really not bad, as is. It's just that I'm more aware of things like this now after being spoiled by those unitized target triggers in my other M-faux rifles.
