Prayer Request: My Mother-in-Law Has Had a Stroke

Asking for prayers for my 77 y/o Mother-in-law, who had a stroke Sunday morning. She holds down two part-time jobs for the Church, which she will probably now lose due to her condition and the need for extended rehab.

Update:

She is at Washington Adventist Hospital in ICU. The stroke apparently affected her speech center. She can move her right leg but not her right arm. She is on a ventilator because her airway collapsed and is also on a feeding tube. My wife visited this afternoon. She is alert and responsive.

Please keep her in your prayers. She has been a stalwart warrior for the Church her entire life,and we hope for a return to a full life for her.

Update on my Mother-in-Law, Mary Kunze:

After 16 days she has been moved to Intermediate Care from ICU. She had a trach installed yesterday and is gradually being taken off the respirator. I visited yesterday and she was alert, lucid and in good spirits. She continues to have right-side paralysis and is on IV nourishment. She is to be evaluated tomorrow and we should know more about the prognosis.

A few years ago my F-I-L suffered a stroke. The only lingering effects are R side reduced function (leg and arm).

He spent many weeks in hospital and rehab. He set a goal for himself that he would once again sit behind the wheel and drive. He conquered that goal... kinda. He uses his L foot to lift his R foot of the accelerator. Pretty scary being a passenger, but even at almost 90, he’s pretty independent and his priorities are driving himself to his lady-friend’s house each day.

Just more “Can Do” attitude from a WWII Sub Sailor.

I just came across this thread. I’m praying for your mother-in-law.

Is she getting any therapy yet? The sooner she starts, the better. Family participation in her therapy is important. Keep a record of her therapy, and her progress. Later, she may appreciate any videos you might take now. It will help her see her own progress.

Her therapists are probably giving you papers with lists of words or sounds for her to practice, diagrams of exercises, etc. Organize them into a notebook. Write dates on things where appropriate. Later, you may want to know when she wrote that list of words, or when she first moved her arm. This notebook will be especially helpful as a homemade textbook of therapy exercises. Even if you think she’s getting plenty of therapy from the experts, there may come a time when you’ll need to provide some of this therapy.
