As a life-long nautical buff, this is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. Someone at the Daily Breeze put together this interactive map of some of the prominent shipwrecks in and around San Pedro (the Los Angeles Harbor). The closest to where I live is the FS Loop (#8).

Also of note is the undersea topography which I've never seen like this before. I do know that some points between Point Fermin and Catalina get as deep as 5,000 feet.

Cool. I wonder how many of these have been dived on.

I live in Long Beach. I have a friend in Pedro that works for a salvage company. He might enjoy this.

Here’s a little history for you. During WWII a number of ships were built out of concrete (Yes CONCRETE) due to the scarcity of steel because of the war. Nine of these were sunk at Kiptopeake, VA in the late 40’s to form a breakwater for the Chesapeake Bay ferry landing, the ferries since replaced by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The ships are still there, now part of the Kiptopeake State Park and the landing is a boat ramp.
