Ancient rock art discovered in the Scottish Highlands

Stone carvings dating back centuries have been uncovered by an amateur archaeologist.

The prehistoric artwork was found on the mountain of Ben Lawers in the Scottish Highlands by rock art enthusiast George Currie.

The art is similar to other prehistoric pieces found in the area, consisting of depressions known as cup marks, or cup and ring marks, which are carved on rocks

However, the newly-discovered rock is unusual as it bears a much higher concentration of the markings than is normally found.

The rock has more than 90 cup marks and at least four cup and ring marks. A number of linear grooves can also be seen, with some still showing the individual blows of the craftsman's stone pick.

The find was made on land cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, and the purpose of the artworks remains unknown.

Derek Alexander, archaeologist for the National Trust for Scotland, said: 'This is an exciting find as it shows that there remains undiscovered prehistoric rock art to be found in the Scottish hills.

'More surprising are the quantity and variety of the symbols displayed on this boulder.

Probably not. The photo just sucks. Dunno why the photographer would run a story without a decent photo.

Thanks for the second pic. The first one looks more like worn worm fossils than rock art.

In that particular picture, (easier to see when blown up a bit) that ‘track rock’ itself resembles a standing bison, facing the left edge of the secreen.

No idea whether that is just due to camera angle, or if it actually does look that way in reality.
