So you mean when I illegally downloaded it I not only illegally stole from Microsoft I stole from i4i?
XML has been around for what... 15 years?
Microsoft a crook? :)
Seriously though, XML has been around for awhile.
The office I work in used to have Corel’s WordPerfect, which I loved. I could do wonders on it. Then they cheaped out and decided to settle for Microsoft Word, which I hate because it is awkward and counter-intuitive. And I’m not real fond of Mac’s word processing, either.
I guess they’ll have to bundle Notepad with Office to replace Word. The “Standard Edition” will have a button link to Minesweeper on the Toolbar. The “Professional Edition” will have button links to the rest of the MS Games.
Microsoft led the charge to have software treated as a device rather than information, subject to patent, rather than copyright, so they get what they deserve.
Personally I think intellectual property law has stayed so far from it Constitutional intent that "piracy" is almost a justified act of civil disobedience, but I have some resentments born of the misbehavior of mathematics publishers.
Damn this judge. Sell it anyway.
So who let them have a patent?
Time to investigate the examiners.
Microsoft Tourette's
Good Grief!!! What kind of insanity is this?
I want a patent for the lower-case "e". I demand it.
IDIOTS! XML is a 50-year-old protocol. It is in general public use.
Its a darned strange concept to steal a language...
Really really hope Microsoft wins this one. Without it, no SVG, XUL, OpenOffice documents, GNUCash files, and much more. The XML patent will most likely be invalidated.
They all probably should be.
Cheers!
Federal Judge from East Texas "OJ Trial and Patent Zone" oerders Microsoft to cease selling Microsoft Word because of a software patent infringement. PING!
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
This is just too funny.
I hate Microsoft Word. It is full of quirks. The way it handles styles is bizarre. Options for bullets and outlines are not all presented in the menus. I get documents from other people which have bullets or outline structures which are not available on my menu. You just have to know where things are hidden, in the most bizarre locations. And it is almost impossible, unless you are a “power user” to figure out how to make adjustments to formatting in a document someone else has typed.
And God help you if you make a mistake that causes things to suddenly change style. You had better have saved a copy recently, because you will need to go back to it.
WordPerfect was much more intuitive. You could use “Reveal Codes” to see what the program was doing behind the scenes. Word has a feature like that, but it only reveals about half of what it is doing. It keeps the rest secret.
The Patent system is insane and so is Microsoft. The patent should not have been granted as it would cover all XML and HTML editors. The problem is that HTML and SMGL editors existed before the patent was granted. However, the geniuses at Microsoft k...new about the patent and still decided to have Word and Excel 2007 use a specialized super set of XML. Instead of fighting the patent, they contested the claim that they were covered, despite the internal emails saying otherwise.
