The little finger sized dragon is exquisite artwork, but it shows the thing I object to in dragon artwork; those lovely almost diaphanous wings are simply too flimsy to support flight.
Consider the musculature of the wings; there isn’t any!
And yet, it looks right.
.
Well, accepting this, I had to think about how dragons could fly. Being something of a scientist, or at least having a scientific mind, as well as being an erstwhile novelist and starving poet, I put my mind and talents to the problem as I saw it.
Now, everybody knows that dragons breathe fire. Scientifically applying this information, I decided that it made sense that the same energy that could roast an enemy could provide the motive force for flight.
So I designed my dragons with internal combustion engines.
Organic ones, of course. In the short snippet above about riding on a dragon, I mentioned the lungflap that covers the firelung. The firelung is like a bellows, drawing in air. Then the lungflap closes, sealing the chamber.
Alcohol is sprayed into the firelung and ignited, just as the dragon does externally when he wants to roast marshmallows. The expanding (exploding!) gases inflate the fire lung rapidly, drawing the sinews attached to the wings downward.
This powerful downward thrust is what gets and keeps the dragon airborne. All the rest of flight is just gliding and manuevering.
And that’s how an animal that weighs more than an elephant can fly.
And unless you want another long-winded explanation, don’t ask me how the dragon keeps from getting drunk with all the alcohol inside him.
Lady J!
I love it!
I used to love listening to Puff the Magic Dragon over and over. That song only confirmed my belief that dragons were real! LOL
I do some of my best writing about dragons!
I wish I could say that. I've really been struggling with that story.
Maybe dragon eggs take longer to hatch.
From the Dragon’s point of view it might appear different!

Lord of the Grey Mist Mountains
The peaks are stark and chill
the winds cold enough to kill
Nothing grows in highland droll
where ancient talons take their toll
Black scales gleaming in the dim half light
wings cups down catch the wind just right
And silent comes the Lord upon bent wing
and soft indeed the fates do care to sing
Eyes that see in day or dark the same
identifies and give all things their names
And great lord of the mountains knows
to the second times eternal ebb and flow
Swift as ever though oh so old
living here in the bitter cold
He dreams of warmer days and places
where he once pursued prey in races
Now he hunts what comes to hand
and wish the better life was not banned
But his kind and man can not abide
for both ride fates eternal tide
Fang and curved claw and winged might
sometimes comes out second in the fight
One can not fight mans deadly mechanical tools
and the dragon who thinks he can is but a fool
Time passes on and thing shift about
and now its mans bold time to shout
Perhaps the day of dragons will come again
and its will be man in the fresh meat bin
So care is called for, stay in dreams
dont let man find you, best it seems
Mark your time and patient wait a spell
if things go right, you can give man hell
Boy, that gonna leave a mark when she hits the ground.

When I was in college, my co-worker Bud, a fork-truck driver, often enriched my life with his pithy wisdom. We were eating lunch one day, sitting on the back of his fork truck, when I announced that I was transferring to another school.
Why? he asked.
All my friends are transferring, I answered.
Bud chewed his sandwich for a moment and then replied quietly and with subtle irony, I guess thats one way to pick a school.
His words struck me with rare force. Of course, I thought. But is this the only way to choose a school? Will I follow my friends for the rest of my days, or will I follow Jesus? Will I seek His face and His will and go where He wants me to go?
Twenty-five times in the New Testament, Jesus said to His disciples, Follow Me. In Mark 8:34, He said, Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. No matter what others do or what direction their lives may take, we must do what He asks us to do.
The words of an old song come to mind: My Lord knows the way through the wilderness; all I have to do is follow!
Hi *waving*!!!
