I have been a little concerned about the walking. I do fine, but my legs get tired pretty fast. I will be taking my cane for security. Would sure hate to fall and not be able to get up.

If you want to go, you could probably skip the march. Just go to Walter Reed and the Candlelight Vigil on Friday ; then the breakfast and the banquet Saturday.

I think it will be fun. I’ve been trying to get some DVDs for Marissa to take. I hope the hotel has a player for the kids. They will need something to do during the banquet.

Think about it, it isn’t to late. You can make hotel reservations and cancel them the 9th if you can’t make it.

Erato

  pay homage to erato
for she plays her flute
long into the night
her music as sweet
as the fragrance
of her crown of roses
the muse of love poetry
her inspiration lays
in waiting
for the poet's repertory

Oh, Love!

The question you asked a moment ago?
You wanted the meaning of?
We were speaking of the basic things,
About life and living ... Oh, Love!

Yes, Love makes life worth living,
No matter your circumstance,
How dreary the world is around you,
Yet Love makes you want to dance!

The questing swain or suitor,
May seem like a court’s lost fool,
But love gives him grandeur and dignity,
At least that’s the general rule.

And Love in the basest family,
Ennobles the mom and dad,
To Queen and King of the Castle,
And a Prince of a sturdy lad.

I’m glad you asked me this question,
I’ve been wishing to share the truth of,
That wonderful blessing you’ve brought to me,
And the life-long treasures ... Oh Love.

This is such a lovely post and reminds me that Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is somewhere I'd like to visit. We go by there on our trips to the Smokies but haven't taken the time to explore the area.

Gardengirl did a good job of explaining the facts behind this unique forest. Here's some more info on Joyce Kilmer along with a link.

"During the Second Battle of Marne, there was heavy fighting throughout the last days of July 1918, and on July 30, 1918, Kilmer volunteered to accompany Major William "Wild Bill" Donovan when Donovan's First Battalion was sent to lead the day's attack.

During the course of the day, Kilmer led a scouting party to find the position of a German machine gun. When his comrades found him, some time later, they thought at first that he was peering over the edge of a little hill, where he had crawled for a better view. When he did not answer their call, they ran to him and found him dead. According to Father Duffy: “A bullet had pierced his brain. His body was carried in and buried by the side of Ames. God rest his dear and gallant soul.” Kilmer died, likely immediately, from a sniper's bullet to the head near Muercy Farm, beside the Oureq River near the village of Seringes, in France, on July 30, 1918 at the age of 31.[31] For his valor, Kilmer was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre (Cross of War) by the French Republic. Kilmer was buried in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial, near Fere-en-Tardenois, Aisne, Picardy, France. Although Kilmer is buried in France in an American military cemetery, a cenotaph is located on the Kilmer family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. A memorial service was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan". Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
