August

August rushes by like desert rainfall,
A flood of frenzied upheaval, Expected,
But still catching me unprepared.
Like a matchflame
Bursting on the scene,
Heat and haze of crimson sunsets.
Like a dream
Of moon and dark barely recalled,
A moment,
Shadows caught in a blink.
Like a quick kiss;
One wishes for more
But it suddenly turns to leave,

Those lilypads are so pretty. The little goldfish pond we had was too shallow to ‘plant’ any, so I bought some little artificial ones to float on top. No, they didn’t look real, but they were kinda pretty anyway - until they faded in our hot sun. :)

This poem played part in my childhood. A bunch of us kids would get together and head down the road to railroad tracks where blackberries grew unchallenged. On the way there was a parcel of land covered with Concord grapes where a house once stood and we'd grab a bunch on the way to but seldom pick them on the way back so as not to wash away the sweet taste of blackberries

August

When the blackberries hang swollen in the woods, in the brambles nobody owns, I spend all day among the high branches, reaching my ripped arms, thinking of nothing, cramming the black honey of summer into my mouth; all day my body accepts what it is. In the dark creeks that run by there is this thick paw of my life darting among the black bells, the leaves; there is this happy tongue. Mary Oliver
