Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Del Monte Fresh Produce Voluntarily Recalls Cantaloupes Because Of Possible Health Risk

Contact-US-Executive-Office@freshdelmonte.com
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - March 22, 2011 - Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. (Del Monte Fresh) of Coral Gables, Florida is voluntarily recalling 4,992 cartons of cantaloupes, each containing 4 plastic mesh sleeves with 3 cantaloupes per sleeve, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Panama, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella Panama often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella Panama can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The cantaloupes were distributed through warehouse clubs in Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
The recalled products consist of cartons of cantaloupes, each containing 4 plastic beige mesh sleeves each sealed with a plastic orange handle with the Del Monte Logo and indication 3 count, Product of Guatemala with 3 cantaloupes per sleeve and were available for sale between the 10th of March and the 21st of March, 2011. The cantaloupes, grown in and shipped from Del Monte Freshs farm Asuncion Mita in Guatemala, have a light brown color skin on the exterior, with orange flesh. The recalled cartons of cantaloupes are dark brown cardboard with the Del Monte logo in red lettering and cantaloupes in yellow lettering on a green background. The cantaloupes have the lot codes: 02-15-24-10, 02-15-25-10, 02-15-26-10 and 02-15-28-10
This cantaloupe recall is being implemented following a notification from the FDA that there is an epidemiologic link between the cantaloupes and approximately 12 reported cases of Salmonella Panama. Del Monte Fresh has put on hold the production and distribution of the product from the affected farm. The FDA and the Company will continue their investigation as to what, including whether the Companys product, caused the problem.
Consumers who believe that they are in possession of uneaten cantaloupe affected by this recall should return it to the place of purchase for a refund and for more information may contact 1-800-659-6500 (operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week) or email Del Monte Fresh at Contact-US-Executive-Office@freshdelmonte.com

Just ran across a very interesting and pretty complete manual for dehydrating - from 1943. (While I WAS several years old, I wasn’t old enough to really be interested in the dehydrating then... LOL)
Seems they pretty well covered anything we might encounter today - little has changed in drying foods, well, maybe we don’t use sulfur so much and tend to use ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) instead, but other than that it is spot on...

RESTRICTIONS that are being imposed in order to conserve
essential materials for war needs make it imperative that
methods of food preservation other than canning be adapted to assist
in building up adequate food supplies. Many families are not in a
position to can yegetables properly, because pressure cookers are not
available. Glass jars, rubber jar rings, and many of the other accessories to canning are becoming scarce. The army, the navy, and the
lend-lease program are taking large volumes of our commercially
packed foods, making some of the important food items hard to
obtain.
The Victory Garden Campaign will increase the raw material
supply to most families, and provision should be made by these
families to preserve the surpluses from their gardens. Where pressure cookers are not available to preserve these surplus vegetables, a
simple small drying unit, used to conserve these products, can be
made or obtained at a nominal cost.
good info printed it

Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) Capsules: Special Storage and Handling Requirements
AUDIENCE: Pharmacy, Cardiology, Patients
ISSUE: FDA is alerting the public to important storage and handling requirements for Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) capsules. Due to the potential for product breakdown from moisture and loss of potency, Pradaxa capsules should only be dispensed and stored in the original bottle or blister package.
BACKGROUND: Pradaxa is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) medication known as a direct thrombin inhibitor. The Pradaxa label and Medication Guide contain information about these special storage and handling requirements, but FDA is concerned that these requirements are not commonly known and are not being followed by Pradaxa users and by pharmacies.
RECOMMENDATION: Pharmacists should only dispense Pradaxa in the original manufacturer bottle with the original dessicant cap. Do not repackage Pradaxa capsules in standard amber pharmacy vials. Patients should not store or place Pradaxa capsules in any other container, such as pill boxes or pill organizers. Open only one bottle of Pradaxa at a time. Once the bottle is opened, the product must be used within 60 days. Read the Medication Guide for Pradaxa for more information about these special storage and handling requirements.
Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:
* Complete and submit the report Online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm
* Download form or call 1-800-332-1088 to request a reporting form, then complete and return to the address on the pre-addressed form, or submit by fax to 1-800-FDA-0178

You are encouraged to report all serious adverse events and product quality problems to FDA MedWatch at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm
I’m slow here responding to the LISTSERV idea if FR is taken down.
GREAT idea! How do we implement that so it is ready to go if needed?
LOL, I’m going to have to do some checking since it has been many years since I used it.
Right now, I am up to my eyeballs in fiddling with Linux - bought a 2 TB USB drive and right now trying to get all the drivers for printer and scanner worked out. Once that is done, I plan to set up HTML and Mail servers. (Ambitious aren’t I) Since it has been about 5 or 6 years since I worked on Unix boxes, I have to really scratch my head sometimes to remember. (Old age does that)
Now that taxes are completed, and we are going to get 5 days of rain out of the next 7, I’m gonna be getting busy with it and see if I can find out how to do it...
You do like to keep busy with a variety of projects, don’t you? ;)
2 TB - too cool!
That 2 TB drive was only $99 -
Geesh, packrat that I am, the other day I went through some old catalogs I had saved -
1200/300 baud modem card $549 - (software for it - $49)
LOL 8” Floppy disks and those ‘new’ 5 1/4” ones too.
hard to believe the changes in so few years.
Good to hear from you Granny.

I’m no expert, but hve read that beans paired with grains, corn, seeds, or nuts will make a complete protein. I’ve searched a wee bit on it b/c I want to store foods that will create a complete protein, in case the worst happens.
Aand - they don’t need to be eaten at the same time. A grain for lunch and legumes for dinner will give the body the protein it needs (must save it up, like some of the vitamins). Soy beans, I think, are the only bean to have a complete protein in themselves. (But I could be wrong, because I’m relying on my faulty memory here!)

I’m now going to play a little concerto for my cucumber
In 2003 some more serious South Korean researchers undertook a large project concentrating
on two staples of the oriental diet, cucumber and Chinese cabbage. They played to
them what they described as “green” sounds, combining classical music with noises
that the plants might be expected to encounter in real life, such as bird calls
and rushing water. They discovered that the effect of sound waves was to make the
cabbages absorb more oxygen than those that had been raised in silence, with a consequently
beneficial effect on their protein levels; but they appeared to have no effect on
the cucumbers.
Urban Gardening in Bottle Caps
The project’s Merry Farming Kit is a mini urban gardening kit that uses plastic
bottle caps as planters for bean sprouts. All that’s included are seeds and a compressed
piece of soil that fits perfectly into a cap from a PET bottle. It’s a simple idea
combining agriculture with recycling, but could be a good idea for brands to take
up themselves to promote ecology for packaging after use.

New Documentary - Queen of The Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?
What Are the Bees Telling Us? is a profound, alternative look at the global bee
crisis from Taggart Siegel, director of THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN. Taking us
on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world
of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and
dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers
from around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva.
Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in
balance with nature.

City Farmer wins Treehugger’s “Best Farming/Gardening Website” Award 2011
“You’ve been awarded a Best of Green Award in our Food & Health category!”
“For the past 33 years(!!), City Farmer has been spreading the word about farming

message has never been more relevant: Everyone should be “farming” their own land
(even if land is a rooftop or balcony).”

Montreal awaits crop from 3,000 square meter greenhouse rooftop farm
MONTREAL - A Montreal company is eagerly awaiting a crop of tomatoes, cucumbers
and herbs grown in a vast greenhouse perched on top of an office building, and billed
as the world’s first rooftop garden farm.
“Our vision is a city of rooftop farms,” says the Lufa Farms website of the gardens

1850, in the time of Charles Dickens - a call for more Allotments
There is some spare time for labourers, in the long days when work is over, that
might be profitably spent in cultivating vegetables; and this makes it sad to see
idle men and boys lounging in a village street, having nothing to occupy their evening
hours. The allotments, indeed, where they exist at all, employ many who frequently
toil on them till it is quite dark; and I have often heard the pleasant sound of
the spade even by moonlight.
