Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The insides of banana peels are full of antioxidants and potassium, and therefore, surprisingly, can have healing powers when it comes to many facial problems. Here are some ways that eHow suggests you use banana peels for skin care:
* Rub inside of banana peel on psoriasis-affected areas of skin. Skin might be red at first, but you should notice a difference within a few days.
* Rub inside of banana peel over your acne at night for improved skin.
* Rub on poison ivy to stop itching and subdue inflammation. Reapply as necessary.
I wonder, can you dehydrate the peels to use later in a poultice? Would it retain the same properties in a facial scrub or a lotion?

The Government's New Right to Track Your Every Move With GPS
Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway - and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 24, 2010 - Natural Wellness is announcing that it is conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of MasXtreme, Lot # 907043, UPC 094922300805. Laboratory analysis conducted by FDA has determined the product contains undeclared amounts of Aminotadalafil, an analog of tadalafil. Tadalafil is an FDA-Approved drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), making the MasXtreme an unapproved new drug.
Risk Statement: FDA advises that this poses a threat to consumers because aminotadalafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.
MasXtreme is sold in blister packs containing one (1) capsule. The product is distributed nationwide by Natural Wellness Inc. This product is being promoted for increasing desire and sexual performance. The product is sold without medical prescription. No adverse events have been reported.
Consumers who have purchased MasXtreme tablets are urged to immediately discontinue their use and return the product to their place of purchase or directly to Natural Wellness Inc. at 440 S Federal Hwy, Suite 107, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. Consumers with questions regarding this recall may contact the company at 954-570-6662 Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm. Consumers who have purchased this product and have medical concerns should consult with their health care providers.

Dear Dollmaking Friends,
I just got a note that Doll Crafter and Costuming magazine will stop
publication as of the Oct. 2010 issue. Sadly that was such a great
magazine with a lot of variety. Everyone who has a subscription will
have their subscription switched to Dolls magazine. If you already
subscribe to both, they will refund your money or extend your current
Dolls subscription. Judi Ward will have an article in an upcoming
Dolls magazine on how to weft hair using Grrrip glue. Her technique
creates a very flexible THIN weft that works for mohair, human hair,
and other fibers. I have seen the results, and they are awesome.
Perhaps I can get Judi to share her technique after the article is
published.
Meanwhile, check out News From the Home Front below for some really
exciting news. I jumped up and down when I heard.

PAPERCLAY EMERGENCY SUBSTITUTION
We sell paperclay at Dollmaker’s Journey. However, for those who have
a midnight inspiration and can’t wait to order some, here is an
emergency substitution that might work for you.
http://ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-clay
The ingredients are inexpensive, and can be found at your local
grocery and hardware store.
You will need:
Cheap toilet paper (one roll per quart of clay)
1 cup Joint Compound from the hardware store (get “regular,” not “fast
set” or “light”)
In Australia it is called Stopping Compound (GIB is a brand name)
This is what you smear on the joints where two pieces of dry wall
join. It is then covered with
paper tape, smeared with more joint compound, smoothed with a trowel,
sanded and painted
3/4 cup Elmer’s Glue-all, white glue, or PVA
1/2 cup White Flour
2 tablespoons Linseed Oil
If any of you try this recipe, let us know what you think.

TRAVELING DOLLHOUSE
By Bonnie B. Lewis
This summer I have had several groups of grandchildren visiting (7 at
one time), and one of the first things they want to do is make
something with grandma. I remembered a book I purchased when my
children were small called The Woman’s Day Book of Weekend Crafts
(Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1978.) In it they have directions
for creating a wonderful traveling dollhouse with furniture. It is
portable, folds flat, and stores in a box when not in use. The house I
made with my children when they were young has long since vanished,
but we created two new ones during the week everyone visited.
I got one of their fathers to cut wood as follows:
Use 1/4” or 3/8” plywood (hardboard would also work)
Cut two 11” x 27” pieces for walls and four 13-1/2” squares for floors
At the center of long edge of one 27” wall, cut a 5-1/2” long vertical
notch 1/4” or 3/8” wide (depending on width of wood). Repeat on other
wall piece. Test-fit two wall pieces together by sliding the notched
edges together crosswise. This will look like a large X, and will
create a house with four rooms. The wooden floors fit inside each
room.
Sand and prime all surfaces. Paint or cover floors and walls as
desired. We cut up an old rug for one floor, used wood grain contact
paper to cover others, and floor tiles for the kitchen. For walls use
wallpaper, paint, gift wrap, rice paper, veneer wood strips, contact
paper, etc.
The original house had a kitchen, living room, children’s bedroom, and
parent’s bedroom. Of course, the first thing they decided was that
they didn’t need a parent’s bedroom. Instead, we created a boy’s room
and a girl’s room, along with a kitchen and living room. One boy’s
room had black glossy walls (he always wanted a black bedroom, but his
parents said no) with red metallic stripes. The other boy’s room was
green with sponge splotches that looked like Army camouflage. The
floors were separate, and could be turned over and covered with
something entirely different for more options. The boy’s rooms had
beanbag chairs, TV and video games, and became an entertainment
center. The girl’s room had desk, lamp, bunk beds, dollhouse, etc.
During the week the children learned to knit, crochet, and braid rugs,
do long stitch pictures and needlepoint pillows, paint and paper
walls, sponge paint designs using crumpled plastic wrap and paint,
create floors with rugs, fabric, contact paper, tiles, and make
wonderful furniture using pill bottles, spools of thread, lids, match
boxes, and sculpt clay food.
We covered balsa wood with cork, pictures, and map tacks to create
bulletin boards, round wood pieces became clocks (find great clock
faces at http://www.printmini.com/printables/), round wood on top of
empty spools of thread became stools, a pill bottle topped with a
plastic lid and lace doily became a kitchen table, fancy beads topped
with decorative cake molds became lamps, match boxes with beads became
drawers for the desk, dresser, and kitchen cabinets, a 4-1/2” wooden
dowel and straw from a whisk broom glued and secured with wire became
a broom, scraps of vinyl became beanbag chairs filled with plastic
pellets, a wooden block painted and covered with foam fun shapes and
topped with a stuffed pillow became a desk stool, a foam shaped flower
with a mirror glued to the center became a wall mirror, etc.
We also went online and found many paper miniatures by going to Google
and entering printable miniatures. They even made a baby grand piano
for the living room. Just make sure you click on the 1” scale. The
children found CDs and DVDs, TVs, game boys, computers, along with
great seasonal decorations. I believe the black bedroom is going to
turn into a haunted house at Halloween complete with bats, skeletons,
pumpkins, and lots of other scary things they found online.
I feel we have a whole generation growing up addicted to video games.
This was a chance to teach them some old fashioned skills. Of course,
we still need to make the dolls (check out the dollhouse family
pattern by Barbara Graff at http://dollmakersjourney.com/graff.html)
but that is a project for another day. The best thing about this
project is the possibility of Christmas gifts anything for the
dollhouse would be welcome.
This would also be a great project for any grandmother to have. I
asked my son-in-law to cut another dollhouse out for me. This house
could also be enlarged to fit Barbie dolls. Just use a proportional
scale wheel (http://dollmakersjourney.com/supplies) to make sure rooms
are to scale. I hope you have fun this summer and share your skills
with those you love.

KNITWEAR DESIGNER KIT
While touring Luray Caverns in Virginia with my grandchildren, we saw
a kit in the tourist shop I couldn’t resist. It is by Alex, and is
called Knitwear Designer. It was kind of pricey ($26.99), but I
decided if it encouraged my granddaughters to learn to knit, it would
be worth the cost. It includes knitting needles (size 9), 6 colors
yarn, buttons, beads, thread, embroidery floss, needles (yarn and
embroidery), a 12” cloth Molly Dolly and directions to create 12
different outfits using just a basic knit stitch. I already taught two
granddaughters (age 9 and 11) to make a vest and scarf. They were so
excited to learn to knit clothes for this charming little doll. (The
11-year old has since started knitting a scarf for herself to wear to
school.)

CUSTOMER QUERIES/COMMENTS
Q: I have been sculpting heads for Shari Lutz’s Sarfina. Boy you sure
have to be able to laugh at yourself when beginning this project.
Michelangelo I’m not. Now I need hair. I know some of you tried this
doll or another black doll. Where have you found good hair?
A: We sell Shari Lutz’s Sarafina on our site (http://
dollmakersjourney.com/lutz.html), so I checked her out. It looks like
she uses wool roving glued to the head, which is created from
paperclay over Styrofoam. Using felting needles with mohair wouldn’t
work very well, as the needles wouldn’t penetrate the Styrofoam. You
could either use Tibetan Lamb which comes on a skin, wool roving, or
sew small braids to a wig cap made from fabric or buckram and glue to
the head for dreadlocks. You can get small braids (used for hair
extensions) at Sally’s Beauty Supply store. Hope this helps.

NEWS FROM THE HOME FRONT
Bonnie has been busy creating dollhouses with grandchildren, teaching
them to knit, and just got back from Day with Dolls in New York with
Mary Ann and Jim. On the way home we saw a delightful canoe carnival
with 17 floats built on top of 1 or 2 canoes. They take turns rowing
around the lake. The grand prize winner was Peter Peter Pumpkin
Eater’s wife in a pumpkin with bars in the window singing Jail House
Rock along with a wolf and other animals. There was also an Aladdin
float with the genie slowly rising from a lamp and Aladdin, Jasmine,
the monkey and parrot circling around it on flying carpets. Her
favorite one was from Up, where a house attached to over 100 balloons
slowly floated from the ground to the top of a waterfall and back
again. Mary Ann showed everyone how to use some of our newest
products, including Lutrador and Photo Transfer Paper.
But the biggest news is that on Wednesday July 21st at the majestic
Cliffs of Moher on the West Coast of Ireland James Patrick Lyng
formally proposed marriage to Mary Ann Kaahanui in the wind and rain!
Yes, it was a grand vacation indeed. They arrived in London early
Tuesday morning July 13th and spent five days exploring one of the
worlds most exciting capital cities. Besides all the must-see points
of interest: Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London, The Changing of
the Guard, Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Oxford they enjoyed two
fabulous theater performances Wicked and Billy Elliott. On Sunday
the 17th they flew to Dublin, Ireland and joined a marvelous week long
bus tour that traveled from Dublin to Killarney to Galway and back to
Dublin. Jim and Mak would highly recommend the C.I.E. Tour Company
www.cietours.com/us - every aspect of the tour the hotels, food,
itinerary and Noel the worlds greatest bus driver/tour guide was
absolutely top-notch. It was, without question the best vacation so
expertly planned by Jim that either has ever had. And, oh by the way,
the answer was YES!!! To see Engagement Announcement go to...

Hearing, seeing and reading all the MSM assurances that the worst is over, the following sort of puts it into perspective......
“We will not have any more crashes in our time.”
- John Maynard Keynes in 1927
“There will be no interruption of our permanent prosperity.”
- Myron E. Forbes, President, Pierce Arrow Motor Car Co., January 12, 1928
“There may be a recession in stock prices, but not anything in the nature of a crash.”
- Irving Fisher, leading U.S. economist , New York Times, Sept. 5, 1929
“I expect to see the stock market a good deal higher within a few months.”
- Irving Fisher, Ph.D. in economics, Oct. 17, 1929
“This crash is not going to have much effect on business.”
- Arthur Reynolds, Chairman of Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago, October 24, 1929
“We feel that fundamentally Wall Street is sound, and that for people who can afford to pay for them outright, good stocks are cheap at these prices.”
- Goodbody and Company market-letter quoted in The New York Times, Friday, October 25, 1929
“This is the time to buy stocks. This is the time to recall the words of the late J. P. Morgan... that any man who is bearish on America will go broke. Within a few days there is likely to be a bear panic rather than a bull panic. Many of the low prices as a result of this hysterical selling are not likely to be reached again in many years.”
- R. W. McNeel, market analyst, as quoted in the New York Herald Tribune, October 30, 1929
“Buying of sound, seasoned issues now will not be regretted”

Think I’ll continue to prepare.....
Thank you.
Do you have an update on your loved one?
Prayers will continue for her.
He is doing well. Hes all done with treatments. They will take another look at his PSA readings in December to see how the treatments worked. I am confident that all will be well.<<<
Yes, he will be ok, for Freepers have the most healing prayers that I have ever felt.
That is the perfect garden, one that plants and grows, while you are doing other things.
It is what I tried to plant for myself, all over the country.
I like the eating part of gardening best, LOL, ok, so I enjoy the planning and growing of plants too.
Good to have you back, we missed you.
Ten Reasons to Become Self-Sufficient and Ten Ways to Get There<<<
This is an excellent report, I am glad you posted it.
All the points are nicely covered, makes a working plan for anyone.
It is so hot and humid, that all I want is to breathe and it is so difficult, with the humidity.
No, not rain, just a sprinkle.
Thanks for missing me, I thought of you, as I did nothing.
I wonder, can you dehydrate the peels to use later in a poultice? Would it retain the same properties in a facial scrub or a lotion?<<<
Truth - I don’t know.
My thoughts, it is the inside that white pulp that is used and there is no reason to not scrape it out, dehydrate it or freeze it and then use it later.
I would think that you would almost need to make the lotion daily, or use a strong preservative in your lotion.
I have noticed that the wild birds like to eat the insides of bananas and so do bugs, so much so that one could use them as a bait/trap for bugs.
And the outside skins are saved for paper making.
LOL, took me a minute to remember why I was saving those banana skins a few years ago.
We are in the process of buying a 25 acres homestead and are leaving the city. I am taking all of my bee friendly plants with me, and have often considered beekeeping but really didn’t want to do it. This is a great alternative!!!!<<<
Thank you, I too am glad that you have found us again.
You will love your homestead, makes me want to be young again, go for it and consider it a wise move.
Maybe you will have a neighbor who wants to raise bees and you can do your bit, by raising bee flowers.
LOL, sounds like a good trade to me.
The Government’s New Right to Track Your Every Move With GPS<<<
I haven’t taken time to read the thread here, but do know that we do not have the freedoms that we thought we did.
Choose a town from the link below, it will take you to the Las Vegas page, but the map will take you to almost every state in the country and many different police stations.
San Diego main police is always good, easy for me, for I lived there almost 30 years.
Many cars can be tracked with the GPS and they track stolen cars all the time, attempting to catch them before they go into Mexico.
When the dispatcher gives out a call to go to an address, she will more often than not also tell them if you own and carry guns or knives, what mental problems you have, if you are taking medication for it and all your past calls to them and crimes committed.
Privacy is just a word in the dictionary.
Plus they can track you via your cell phone.
Google will give you the police scanner codes if you search and add you city/state.
Every one should be listening to the scanner, for that is where the real news is at.
I don’t own a tv, don’t want one and radio reception is not good here, so I listen on the internet to the police scanners and hear the ugly and the good that is out there each day.

Stabilization at [present] levels is clearly possible.

Think Ill continue to prepare.....<<<<
Yes, continue to prepare, that is the only way.
We all know how difficult it is to find a job today, next year it will be worse.
People are already laying down and dying in our streets, far more of them than you would guess, for it is not published in the papers.
The cops have the calls all the time, “Homeless man/woman appears dead, will not respond”.
Several a day, in all the large towns.
Or an Officer asking for help, for a lady, with a 2 month old and a 2 year old, standing on the corner, confused and has no idea of how to get help, and she is homeless.
In the 1930’s, we left Texas, came to California and lived in our cars, homemade camp trailers or the bushes in the river bottom, whole encampments of us.
When the men got work, we moved out and started a new life.
Today, they do not allow you in the parks at night and you cannot sleep in your car or fancy camper on the public streets or in lots of stores, etc.
If you are homeless, move on for you are not wanted here.
This is getting ugly and scary, for it does not take all that much to be sick and homeless.
Just miss paying the taxes on your home and you will loose it.

Canadian Man Sentenced to 33 Months in Prison for Selling Counterfeit Cancer Drugs Using the Internet
WASHINGTONHazim Gaber, 22, of Edmonton, Canada, was sentenced today in Phoenix by U.S. District Court Judge James A. Teilborg to 33 months in prison for selling counterfeit cancer drugs using the Internet, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke for the District of Arizona, and FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Office Nathan T. Gray. Judge Teilborg also ordered Gaber to pay a $75,000 fine, as well as $53,724 in restitution, and to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
Gaber was indicted by a federal grand jury in Phoenix on June 30, 2009, on five counts of wire fraud for selling counterfeit cancer drugs through the website DCAdvice.com. Gaber was arrested on July 25, 2009, in Frankfurt, Germany, and was extradited to the United States on Dec. 18, 2009. At his plea hearing in May 2010, Gaber admitted selling what he falsely claimed was the experimental cancer drug sodium dichloroacetate, also known as DCA, to at least 65 victims in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands between October and November 2007. Gaber also admitted to selling more than 800 pirated copies of business software between February 2007 and December 2008. As part of the plea agreement, Gaber agreed to forfeit or cancel any website, domain name, or Internet services account related to this fraud scheme.
Hazim Gaber went from selling false hope to cancer patients to now spending 33 months in a U.S. prison, said Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division. Criminals often seek to exploit the most vulnerable of victimsbut offering fake, unapproved medication to cancer patients reaches a new low. Todays sentence shows that cyber criminals who prey on the seriously ill cannot elude justice simply by committing crimes outside of our borders.
Gaber used the Internet to victimize people already suffering from the effects of cancer, said Dennis K. Burke, U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona. Now he will go to prison for this bogus business and heartless fraud.
The FBI and the U.S. Attorneys Office are committed to pursuing individuals who prey on those who are living with the affects of cancer, said Nathan Gray, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Phoenix Division. Todays sentencing illustrates international law enforcement partners working together to send a message not to use the Internet to perpetuate fraud, especially against those afflicted with a serious medical condition.
According to the plea agreement, Gaber charged $23.68 for 10 grams of the purported DCA, $45.52 for 20 grams or $110.27 for 100 grams, plus shipping. In actuality, Gaber admitted he sent victims a white powdery substance that was later determined through laboratory tests to contain starch, dextrin, dextrose or lactose, and contained no DCA. According to court documents, along with the counterfeit DCA, the packages also contained a fraudulent certificate of analysis from a fictitious laboratory and instructions on how to dilute and ingest the bogus DCA. DCA is an experimental cancer drug that has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States. According to the plea agreement Gaber knew that the website DCAdvice.com contained false claims that it was the only legal supplier of DCA and falsely claimed it was associated with the University of Alberta.
According to information contained in the plea agreement, DCA is an odorless, colorless, inexpensive, relatively non-toxic experimental cancer drug that is highly sought by cancer patients. A doctor at the University of Alberta in Canada published a report in early 2007 summarizing the results of a study, which showed that DCA caused regression in several cancers, including lung cancer, breast cancer and cancerous brain tumors. According to information contained in the plea agreement, DCA cannot be prescribed by a medical doctor in the United States or Canada, since it is currently not approved for use in patients with cancer, nor is DCA available in pharmacies.
Todays sentencing is part of a larger department-wide effort led by the Department of Justice Task Force on Intellectual Property (IP Task Force). Attorney General Eric Holder created the IP Task Force to combat the growing number of domestic and international intellectual property crimes, protect the health and safety of American consumers, and safeguard the nations economic security against those who seek to profit illegally from American creativity, innovation and hard work. The IP Task Force seeks to strengthen intellectual property rights protection through heightened criminal and civil enforcement, greater coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, and increased focus on international enforcement efforts, including reinforcing relationships with key foreign partners and U.S. industry leaders. To learn more about the IP Task Force, go to www.justice.gov/dag/iptaskforce/
The case was prosecuted by Trial Attorney Thomas S. Dougherty of the Criminal Divisions Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Sexton of the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Arizona. Significant assistance has been provided by the Edmonton Police Service, the Alberta Justice Office of Special Prosecutions-Edmonton, the Competition Bureau of Canada, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Federal Trade Commission and the Alberta Partnership Against Cross Border Fraud. The Criminal Divisions Office of International Affairs provided assistance in this case. The case was investigated by the Phoenix FBI Cyber Squad.
She continues getting stronger every day. Thank you so much for asking, dear nw_arizona_granny!

Synthetic Methionine Use Extended for Organic Poultry Producers
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (NOP) today announced an amendment to the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances. The amendment extends the use of methionine in organic poultry production. Published in the Federal Register as an interim rule with request for comments, it extends the allowance for methionine in organic poultry production until Oct. 1, 2012, with the following maximum allowable limits of methionine per ton of feed: 4 pounds for layers, 5 pounds for broilers, and 6 pounds for turkeys and all other poultry. The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) determined that the loss of the use of synthetic methionine would disrupt the organic poultry market and cause substantial economic hardship to organic poultry operations.

Food Safety Bill Amended
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee released a copy of the “manager’s amendment” to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) which is, in essence, the bill as reported out of the HELP Committee late last year as modified by a long and arduous set of negotiations that have taken place since that time to work out particular issues. The manager’s amendment will be adopted if and when the bill comes to the Senate floor in September when Congress returns from its summer recess. Most sustainable agriculture and family farm groups think the Senate bill is a very significant improvement over the companion bill passed by the House of Representatives (HR 2749) last year.

Updated Slaughter Facility Maps Available
A little over three months ago, the USDA made available maps showing the densities of small livestock and poultry producers per county and the locations of establishments available to slaughter their animals. They have updated these maps (PDF/1.3MB) (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/PDF/Slaughter_Estab_Maps_080910.pdf) and are now releasing second versions. These new maps show updated slaughter facility data, including locations of additional State-inspected establishments. They’ve also simplified the maps to make them more illustrative. USDA will continue updating the maps into the future, with both improved slaughter facility and production data, and possibly other features to aid in interpretation.

Food Policy Audit Tool Available
Researchers and students at the University of Virginia have developed a Food Policy Audit and are sharing the Audit Tool with other communities. The audit process is designed to assess the strengths, gaps and opportunities in local food system policies, and to identify community priorities for next steps to strengthen the local
food system. Students used the audit to identify existing policies directly related to food production, distribution and access, as well as community activities that might foster food systems goals. The audit reveals the community’s existing policy infrastructure only, not whether the policies have been implemented and achieved their desired effects. As part of the audit process, students met with relevant community members, both government and non-government, to compare audit findings with what is actually happening on the ground. Through this engagement process, students increased community awareness of food system planning and “ground-truthed” their research to increase its relevance and usefulness to the community. An overarching goal of the audit process was to advance the food system conversation and provide a starting point for the region to work together to achieve common goals.
