Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Lamictal (lamotrigine): Label Change - Risk of Aseptic Meningitis
AUDIENCE: Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry
ISSUE: FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that Lamictal (lamotrigine), a medication commonly used for seizures in children two years and older, and bipolar disorder in adults, can cause aseptic meningitis. Symptoms of meningitis may include headache, fever, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, rash, and sensitivity to light. In cases of meningitis, it is important to rapidly diagnose the underlying cause so that treatment can be promptly initiated.
BACKGROUND: The decision to revise the Lamictal label is based on FDA’s identification of 40 cases of aseptic meningitis in patients taking Lamictal (from December 1994 to November 2009). See the Data Summary section of the Drug Safety Communication for additional information.
RECOMMENDATION: Patients should be advised to contact their healthcare professional immediately if they experience signs and symptoms of meningitis while taking Lamictal. If meningitis is suspected, patients should be evaluated for other causes of meningitis and treated as indicated. Discontinuation of Lamictal should be considered if no other clear cause of meningitis is identified.

The active drug ingredient is not listed on the product label. The analogue may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. ED is a common problem in men with these conditions, and consumers may seek these types of products to enhance sexual performance.
BACKGROUND: Product manufactured prior to August 9, 2010 is included in this recall. Prolatis is sold nationwide in double blister packs and 40 count bottles.

1/4 cup warm water — (1/4 to 1/2)
4 tb Sugar
1 pk Active dry yeast
3 c All-purpose flour
1/4 c Instant nonfat dry milk
1/4 c Cold butter or margarine,
- cut into 4 pieces
1/2 c Dark raisins
1 t Salt
1 Egg
Cinnamon Sugar

Stir potato flakes into boiling water. Cool until lukewarm. Reserve.
Combine 1/4 cup of the warm water, 1 tablespoon of the sugar and
yeast. Stir to dissolve yeast and let stand until bubbly, about 5
minutes.
Fit processor with steel blade. Measure flour, dry milk, butter,
remaining 3 tablespoons of the sugar and salt into work bowl. Process
until mixed, about 15 seconds.
Add potato mixture to flour mixture. Process until mixed, about 5
seconds.
Add yeast mixture and egg to flour mixture. Turn on processor and
very slowly drizzle just enough remaining water through feed tube
into flour mixture so dough forms a ball that cleans the sides of the
bowl. Process until ball turns around bowl about 25 times. Turn off
processor and let dough stand 1 to 2 minutes.
Turn on processor and gradually drizzle in enough remaining water to
make dough soft, smooth and satiny but not sticky. Process until
dough turns around bowl about 15 times.
Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 1/2 cup dark
raisins into the dough.. Shape into ball and place in lightly
greased bowl, turning to grease all sides. Cover loosely with plastic
wrap and let stand in warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch down dough. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar. Divide dough into 3 equal
parts. Shape each part into strand 20 inches long. Roll each strand
in Cinnamon Sugar. Braid strands together and place in greased
9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Tuck ends under and pinch to seal. Let stand in
warm place until almost doubled, about 45 minutes.
Heat oven to 350 F. Bake until evenly brown and loaf sounds hollow
when tapped, 35 - 40 minutes.
Remove immediately from pan. Cool on wire rack.

California is in the middle of a whooping cough epidemic, with rates of the infectious disease at least four times the norm for this time of year. Public health officials are asking that all adults, especially those who have contact with newborns, get the vaccine for whooping cough, also known as pertussis. Dr. Susan Fernyak, director of communicable disease control and prevention at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, talked with Chronicle reporter Erin Allday about the epidemic.

Wright County Egg Conducts Nationwide Voluntary Recalls of Shell Eggs Because of Possible Health Risk
Contact:
Egg Safety Media Hotline
404-367-2761
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 13, 2010 - The following statement was released by officials of Wright County Egg regarding the US Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) on-farm records review and egg testing for Salmonella.
Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa is voluntarily recalling specific Julian dates of shell eggs produced by their farms because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis.
Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. These companies distribute nationwide.
Eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Boomsmas, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1946 223.
There have been confirmed Salmonella enteritidis illnesses relating to the shell eggs and traceback investigations are ongoing.
Wright County Egg is fully cooperating with FDAs investigation by undertaking this voluntary recall. Our primary concern is keeping Salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers. As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any Salmonella bacteria present.
Consumers who believe they may have purchased these shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected. Consumers with questions should visit www.eggsafety.org9.
Our farm strives to provide our customers with safe, high-quality eggs that is our responsibility and our commitment.
