Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

16 People Sickened, Possibly By Local Dairy’s Milk
Raw Goat Milk Blamed For campylobacter, E. Coli
POSTED: 4:34 pm MDT June 30, 2010
LONGMONT, Colo. — A Longmont goat dairy has been ordered to stop distributing raw milk products after 16 people became ill after drinking milk.
Two children who drank goat milk from the Billy Goat Dairy required hospitalization, Boulder County Public Health reported Wednesday.
Of the people who reported becoming ill from consuming the milk products, lab tests confirmed the presence of campylobacter and E. coli 0157, the health department said. Both types of bacteria are found in the intestines of animals and can be passed in their feces to food, water, and milk products that haven’t been pasteurized.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 30, 2010 San Diego Tri-Union Seafoods LLC is issuing a precautionary, voluntary recall of a limited amount of Chicken of the Sea brand 12-ounce solid white tuna in water.
Due to a production error, the product does not meet the company’s standards for seal tightness, and the company is conducting the precautionary, voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution to ensure public health, said Shue Wing Chan, president, Tri-Union Seafoods.
There have been no reported illnesses. Loose seals, or seams, could result in product contamination by spoilage organisms or by pathogens and lead to illness if consumed.
Tri-Union Seafoods’ trace-back measures determined distribution of the product at retail was limited to 1,105 total cases in the states of Wisconsin, Nebraska, Utah, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, Colorado, Indiana, California and Oregon. The Chicken of the Sea brand 12-ounce solid white tuna in water was distributed in February and May. Consumers who purchased the product with the UPC code 4800000262, “Best By Date 2/10/2014” and product code 7OA1E ASWAB, 7OA2E ASWAB, 7OA3E ASWAB, 7OA4E ASWAB, 7OA5E ASWAB, 7OAEE ASWAB or 7OAFE ASWAB are asked to call 1-877-843-6376 for return information and a full refund. The UPC code (also known as bar code) is found on the side of the can and the best by date and product code are imprinted on the bottom of the can. No other codes of solid white tuna in water or any other Chicken of the Sea products are affected by this voluntary recall.
“The health and safety of our customers and consumers is paramount. As soon as we discovered this production error, we took immediate steps in issuing this precautionary, voluntary recall, and alerting the appropriate regulatory authorities,” said Chan. “We have notified all of our customers who have received the product and asked them to remove it from their shelves. Our immediate actions in this recall include re-evaluating our systems to ensure this error does not happen again.”
Consumers looking for additional information can call 1-877-843-6376 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Naked Suspects: No Laughing Matter (back)
June 30, 2010
Destroying Myths & Discovering Cold Facts with The Force Science Research Center
When you’re dispatched to a call of a naked person out in public you’d be like a lot of officers if you thought the matter was amusing.
But you’d probably be wrong-and in the worst of circumstances, dead wrong.
Dr. Bill Lewinski, executive director of the Force Science Research Center at Minnesota State University-Mankato, has been tracking encounters between officers and naked adults for more than 20 years.
‘Every year or two, an officer is killed by a naked person,’ he says. ‘If someone is naked in public and is not drunk, not making a radical political or social protest, or not a paid professional like a stripper, the chances are overwhelming that they’re in the midst of a full-blown psychotic episode. In the vernacular, they’re really, really crazy...and potentially very dangerous.
‘The vast majority of police contacts with mentally ill subjects, of course, are nonviolent. But naked people are among those categories that are particularly difficult.’

FDA, FSIS and CDC to Convene Public Meetings on Measuring Progress on Food Safety: Current Status and Future Directions
June 30, 2010
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) jointly announced Public Meetings to be held in Chicago, IL on July 21, 2010, and in Portland, OR on October 20. An initial one-day meeting was held on March 30, 2010, in Washington, DC, where FDA, FSIS and CDC discussed their collaborations on the methodological and data challenges involved in the feasibility and effective food safety metrics. The Transcript of the March 30 Meeting can be found on FDAs webpage at http://www.fda.gov/Food/NewsEvents/WorkshopsMeetingsConferences/default.htm. The purpose of the meetings is for the Agencies to gather information from stakeholders, including the regulated food industry, State regulators, and consumer groups, on the metrics the participants are using to assess performance in food safety. The Agencies are also interested in additional input from participants on their understanding and perceptions of metrics currently being used by the Federal Agencies.
At the two public meetings, the Agencies will hear presentations from any interested stakeholder, possibly including members of consumer groups, industry, state and local regulators, and state and local public health agencies on the measurements they are using or recommend to assess performance in food safety. The Agencies will present information on the Presidents Food Safety Working Groups charge to create meaningful metrics to measure the effectiveness of the nations food safety system. They also will present current thinking, focusing on how these metrics might be applied to Salmonella Enteritidis as FDA implements the egg rule, FSIS implements broiler chicken controls, and CDC collects and analyzes human disease data. Additionally, the Agencies will present information about the shared list of metrics that was developed by them to support the work of the Presidents Food Safety Working Group.
Due to limited space, we encourage all persons who wish to attend the Public Meetings, including those requesting an opportunity to make an oral presentation, to register in advance. Dates and locations are:
* July 21, 2010, from 9:00 to 5:00 pm at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 East Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60601. My parents were vegetarians, but were both southerners, so gravy was a necessity. I learned to make gravy with butter or oil and get good flavor with seasonings and leftover "pot liquor" from cooking. Meat gravy is a snap after that.
Staying at my soon-to-be-in-laws house I offered to make sausage gravy for my FIL. My husband was VERY concerned since he was well aware of my vegetarian background. Warned me that gravy was a religion with his dad. I loved the look on his face when he saw his dad scarfing that gravy down.

Felines Pride Issues Nationwide Recall of its Natural Chicken Formula Cat Food Due to Salmonella Contamination
Contact:
Shelby Gomas,
Tel: 1-716-580-3096
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 1, 2010 - Buffalo, NY Felines Pride is announcing a voluntary recall of Felines Pride Raw food with ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken Formula, Net Wt. 2.5 lbs. (1.13 kg., 40 oz.) produced on 6/10/10, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. People handling raw pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the raw pet food or any surfaces exposed to the product.
When consumed by humans, Salmonella can cause an infection, salmonellosis. The symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, minimal diarrhea, fever, and headache. Certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly susceptible to acquiring salmonellosis from such pet food products and may experience more severe symptoms.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The product is packaged in uncoded plastic containers and sold frozen to private consumers nationwide. Once thawed, the pet food has a shelf life of about 1 week. The firm manufactures the pet food by an as-ordered basis. This recall affects only those orders placed and shipped from June 10 through June 17, 2010.
The firm and FDA are investigating this matter to determine the source of this problem, and will take any additional steps necessary to protect the public health.
To date, both the firm and the FDA have received no reports of Salmonella infection relating to this product.
This product should not be fed to pets but should instead be disposed of in a safe manner (e.g., in a securely covered trash receptacle). People who are experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection after having handled the pet food product should seek medical attention, and report their use of the product and illness to the nearest FDA office.
People should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the pet food especially those made from raw animal protein such as meat or fish — to help prevent infection. People may risk bacterial infection not only by handling pet foods, but by contact with pets or surfaces exposed to these foods, so it is important that they thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap.
Since certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly at risk from exposure they should avoid handling this product.
Consumers with questions should contact the company at (716) 580-3096, Monday Friday from 10 am - 4 pm EDT.
