Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Sunburn Relief Home Remedies – Over 50 Soothing Treatments

Posted By TipNut On July 17, 2007 @ 8:19 am In Beauty & Health, Popular Tips | 101 Comments

This is a large collection of home remedies and treatments I’ve compiled to help with sunburn relief, there are over 50 soothing treatments to review.

At the bottom of this post you’ll find some information about signs to watch for when determining if medical attention is needed as well as blister care and signs of infection.

Melanoma [1] (skin cancer) has grown to be a serious concern in our time. It’s so important to protect our children (and ourselves) as much as we can from getting sunburned.

Please keep the kiddos lathered up in sunscreen, hats and sunglasses too (helps limit the chances of future cataracts [2]). Each sunburn a child experiences can increase their chance of future problems.
Sunburn Relief Home Remedies

Vinegar: Can use white household vinegar or apple cider vinegar

* Spray vinegar all over burn or soak small towels in vinegar and apply to skin
* Bathe in a cool bath with 2 – 3 cups of vinegar
* Rose Petal Vinegar [3] (skip the cloves in the recipe when using for sunburn care) – Spray on skin
* Lavender Vinegar [4] – Spray on skin

Tea: The tannic acid from tea is soothing for sunburns

* Steep a large pot of very strong tea using 4 – 6 tea bags. Refrigerate the tea until it’s cold then soak small towels in the tea and apply to burn area. Can also spray the cold tea on burn. The tea could stain the towels, you may not want to use your best.
* Save used tea bags and apply to burn area (make sure to have bags at room temperature first).
* Bathe in a cool bath with several tea bags in the water.

Dairy:

* Soak small towels in milk and apply to burn area.
* Soak in a bath with cool water and a gallon of milk.
* Plain Yogurt – apply directly to burn area.

Aloe Vera:

* Aloe Vera Gel, either purchased or taken fresh from an aloe leaf.
* Lotions that include Aloe Vera.

Oatmeal:

* Fill a bath with cool water and add 2 cups oatmeal. Soak in bath for about 30 minutes.
* Mix oatmeal with raw egg whites and apply to sunburn.

Baking Soda:

* Fill bath with cool water and add 1 – 2 cups baking soda, dissolve. Soak in tub for 30 minutes.
* Fill a spray bottle with cool water and dissolve 1/4 cup baking soda. Spritz on burned skin.

Essential Oils: Caution when applying on children. Keep out of eyes and mouth.

* Fill a spray bottle with cool water and add a few drops of choice, or add 10 to 12 drops essential oils to a bath full of cool water and soak. Lavender Oil or Chamomile Oil.

Cornstarch:

* Make a paste of cornstarch and water, apply to skin and allow to dry.
* Fill a spray bottle with cool water and add some cornstarch, mix to dissolve. Spray on burn.
* Fill a bath with cool water and add 1 cup cornstarch, dissolve. Soak in tub for 30 minutes.
* Soak in tub or shower with cool water. Pat dry. Lightly dust burn area with cornstarch.
* 1/2 cup cornstarch + 1/2 cup baking soda added to bath of cool water, dissolve. Soak for 30 minutes.

Cucumbers:

* Slices added directly to burn or mash first then apply to burn.
* Grate cucumbers and mix with milk. Apply directly to sunburn.

Potatoes:

* Grate potatoes and apply directly to burn–include as much of the potato juice as possible.

Egg Whites:

* Apply raw egg whites to skin.
* Mix 2 egg whites, 1 TBS honey, 1 TBS witch hazel and apply to burn.

Witch Hazel:

* Spray directly on burn area.

Honey:

* Smooth honey over the burn or slather honey on a strip of gauze and apply to skin.
* Mix honey with lime or lemon juice (80/20) and apply to burn.
* Mix honey 50/50 with milk, stir well, then apply to skin.

Tomatoes:

* 1/4 cup tomato juice or tomato paste mixed with 1 1/2 cups buttermilk. Apply to burn area.
* Slice or mash tomatoes and apply to burn.
* Mash tomatoes and mix with an equal amount of buttermilk. Apply to burned skin.
* Add 2 cups tomato juice to bath of cool water, soak.

More Pantry Fixins:

* Smear mustard on burned skin.
* Soak cloth in pickle juice and apply to burned skin. Or spray pickle juice directly on burn.
* Puree strawberries and apply directly to skin.

Burned Skin Soothers

Water & Ice:

* Spritz chilled water on burn.
* Soak in a cool bath or take a cool shower.
* Wrap ice packs, ice cubes or bags of frozen vegetables in a towel and then apply to burn area to sooth.

* Gold Bond Medicated Lotion
* Lanacane Anti-Bacterial First Aid Spray Anesthetic

The vinegar & honey remedies as well as antibacterial products are preferable when blisters are involved since they are antibacterial, helps prevent infection.

Some Signs of Infection: Swelling, painful, fever, swollen glands

For Pain Relief: Aspirin or ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed.

See A Doctor:

Geeesh it was not as easy as I thought it would be. Had to remember two things instead of one... LOL<<<

Yes, I recall that way of remembering them, word association, didn’t work for me either.

Reminds me of our many years family doctor in San Diego, he had moved to San Diego after WW2, to raise his kids in a small town...said he got to San Diego, as the aircraft plant changed shifts and he couldn’t believe his small town.

Dr. Singleton once told me, that he did not always remember names either, said at the hospital in Boston, as he left the building, a lady stopped him and ask him something and then asked if he remembered her name?

He said it was then it dawned on me that I could not remember her name, but if she would please lift her skirt and drop her drawers, he could give her her medical history and tell her what he had done for her.

And he knew it was time for a change, but even in San Diego, his Boston patients came to him, for he was a fine GYN and they trusted him, we did too.

But first our ever wise government found a use for this fine
GYN, they assigned him to a flat top, to study and find a way for the returning airplanes to land and not break the pilots legs and that was his job in WW2.....Dr. E.B. Singleton.

LOL, it took me several attempts to get Delawhere to work for me, I think part of the problem is this double vision that I have had for a lifetime, I look fast and move on, as if I fine focus, I get sea sick, so the where was not registering in my wee brain.

5 Homemade Garlic Syrup Recipes

Posted By TipNut On December 18, 2006 @ 7:22 am In Beauty & Health, Food, Food Tips, Recipes | 1 Comment

Garlic is eaten regularly by many for a variety of reasons, they believe garlic helps reduce cholesterol, fights coughs, colds and infections, ridding worms (!), calms the hysterical, cancer prevention, asthma treatments and respiratory ailments, vampire protection as well as develops courage if you’re a Roman Gladiator (hehe). And many more.

Instead of eating raw cloves of garlic, some prefer taking Garlic Syrup daily. This stuff can get pretty pricey to buy in the herbal/natural remedy stores, so for DIY’ers and frugalites, here are several different ways you can make your own Garlic Syrup.
Homemade Garlic Syrup Recipes

Recipe #1

1 pint water (boiling hot)
3/4 cup honey
2 ounces garlic cloves
1 TBS white vinegar

Directions:

* Peel and crush garlic and put in sterile glass jar.
* Pour hot boiling water over the garlic.
* Refrigerate overnight. The next day strain the water and add the vinegar and honey to water.
* Refrigerate and take up to 1 TBS three times daily.

Recipe #2

3 bulbs garlic (peeled)
2 cups water
1 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup honey

Directions:

* Add garlic and water to a non-aluminum saucepan and simmer until the water reduces to 1 cup (garlic should now be soft).
* Remove garlic and place in a sterile jar or airtight container.
* Add both the honey and the cider vinegar to the water in the saucepan and boil until syrupy. Pour over garlic, seal and refrigerate overnight.
* Refrigerate and take up to one teaspoon daily.

Recipe #3

4 bulbs garlic (approximately 50 cloves)
1 quart apple cider vinegar

Directions:

* Peel and chop garlic. Place in a sterilized quart jar, cover with vinegar.
* Refrigerate.
* Shake jar daily.
* Take 1 tablespoon up to 3 times a day (adult). Sweeten as you like if needed.

Recipe #4

8 ounces garlic (peeled & minced)
Olive oil

Directions:

* Put garlic in a sterile jar and cover with olive oil. Seal and refrigerate. Strain and use as needed–1 teaspoon per.

*Olive oil is also purported to help with cholesterol

Recipe #5

1 pound garlic cloves (peeled and crushed)
apple cider vinegar
distilled water
1 cup glycerine
1 cup honey

Directions:

* Add garlic cloves to a sterilized 2 quart jar. Fill jar 3/4 full with equal parts vinegar & water. Seal and refrigerate for 4 days, shaking jar 3 times daily.
* After four days, add the glycerine and shake well to mix thoroughly. Set aside another day, shaking 3 times throughout the day.
* The next day strain through cheesecloth to remove all garlic. Return mixture to jar and add the honey, mix well.
* Store in refrigerator.

Make sure you have bunches of fresh parsley on hand to chew regularly if you use this, your breath will be nasty. Cases of breath mints too. Your family will thank you .
Important

It’s always a good idea to run home or herbal remedies by a doctor first. You never know if an ingredient can conflict with current medications or health issues.

Added: I happened across an article about garlic and oil, it should be refrigerated and consumed within a week [1] to prevent danger of botulism. Another article discusses adding acidity to the oil as well (such as vinegar): Preservation of vegetables in oil and vinegar [2].

I was planning an outdoor rock mat for scraping feet but as I think about it, the smooth rocks that I confiscate from the beach would make a lovely bath mat. Those small pebbles that keep rolling in and out with the tide get smooth as glass.

I guess lots of people try to remember by association. LOL had a fellow Post Master named Rudolph Landry. Was always embarrassed when he would address me by name at meetings and I was at a loss to remember his name so decided to think of Rudolph the raindeer landing on a roof. After that , I would meet him, picture Santa and still be at a loss to remember his name. I do use association for my neighbors names. Two names begin with A and two with C so I say to myself AC-AC instead of AC-DC. Crazy but it works and I always remember their names after thinking about it.

With the collapse of now 60+ 550’ long chicken houses, the production will decline by about 178 million birds a year (half a chicken for each man, woman and child in the U.S.) Many are on the verge and the additional 6-8” now forecast could become a further problem.

Prepare to Pay More for Poultry: Chicken Farms Crushed by Snow

February 11, 2010
By Sarah Gilbert
DailyFinance

Snowstorms that hit the Eastern Seaboard this week could mean shortages and high prices at the grocery store — not just for milk and bread, but for chicken. At least a dozen poultry houses at chicken farms on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and in Delaware, as well as one in Shenandoah, Va., suffered collapsed roofs due to heavy snow over the weekend, causing damage in the millions of dollars. And that was before the week’s second storm, which dumped around another foot or more on the region. Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee predicted far more damage to come this week.

Maryland and Delaware are the eighth- and ninth-largest U.S. producers of broiler chickens (the chickens typically used for meat — everything from nuggets to rotisserie), together raising and selling more than 540 million of the country’s 9.01 billion broilers each year. University of Delaware extension specialist Bill Brown told the Associated Press that delays in deliveries of feed and propane to heat chicken houses could also cause a huge number of birds to die of exposure, reducing poultry availability still further and impacting prices in the region.

Chicken farming today is quite different than it was even as recently as the 1960s, and poultry flocks are far more susceptible to unusual weather conditions. Fewer than eight billion pounds of poultry were produced in 1968; that rose to more than 50 billion pounds by 2008. As the number of birds skyrocketed, so did the average size of each bird, while at the same time, the number of weeks chickens lived grew smaller and smaller. It took 16 weeks for a chicken to grow to the average market weight of 2.7 pounds in the 1930s; in the 1990s, specially bred chickens reached an average market weight of 4.7 pounds in fewer than seven weeks.

The price of faster growth and shorter lifespans is far less hardiness; chickens which in the 1950s and 1960s would have been fully-feathered (and thus hardy enough to withstand cold weather) for more than half of their lives now barely reach that age (four to six weeks) before the are slaughtered. In addition, the extremely high density of chicken farming means they’re packed in flat-roofed structures that need not meet the same structural-integrity standards as human housing.

After 10 to 12 more inches of snow fell on the region Wednesday, the chicken farmers of Delaware and Maryland may already be suffering from record losses to match the record precipitation. A few areas in Delaware are still without power. And another snowstorm (”possibly less intense”) is forecast to arrive early next week. Conditions for the two states’ biggest sources of farm income bode ill for the price of poultry in the coming months.

All future updates will occur on the replacement page which is now situated at
http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/handcremerecipe.html
which will open if you click on the link.

The hand cream recipes on this page have come from many sources and have taken several years to gather, I acknowledge the original source of those that I know, I apologise for those cases where I have not attributed the name for those that I don’t know. In all cases the fragrance is optional, the water used was de-ionised.

The quantities of the ingredients are not ‘cast in stone’ you can (and should) experiment, but make small batches and small adjustments at any one time. The quantities for the recipes, that I have myself worked up, are to produce a nominal 100 gm quantity and should be scaled up according to need.

The first recipe is for the hand creme on the previous page that I used to sell. The method used is common to most of the recipes on this page.
26 gm Beeswax
50 gm FGMO
2 gm Borax
22 ml Water
1 drop fragrance I use a large saucepan part full of water with a wire grid in it’s base and two tall glass jars to contain the ingredients. In one I melt the oil and beeswax and in the other I put the water and borax these are heated to around 70° C. The jars themselves are only ever filled to about 40% capacity. The exact temperature is not critical as long as both liquids are at the same temperature, the wax is fully melted and the borax fully dissolved. Add the water phase to the oil/wax mixture while stirring briskly using a domestic power whisk. A white cream forms, The first stirring benefits from being about 10 minutes, then stir intermittently until the mixture cools to 40° C or below and any fragrance oil can then be stirred in. Pour the cream into your pre-labeled jars (this avoids tilting the jar and wetting the interior of the top part of the jar and the inside surface of the lid.

Another version that I used to make was called ‘skin creme’, this was similar, but had different ingredients and quantities.
16 gm Beeswax
18 gm Anhydrous lanolin
30 ml FGMO
1 gm Borax
35 ml Water
1 drop fragrance The method used was identical to the recipe above except that the lanolin was included in the oil phase.

Cosmetic cream was another that I used to manufacture and was of much looser consistency.
16 gm Beeswax
50 ml FGMO
3 gm Borax
31 ml Water
1 drop fragrance Again the method was as the first recipe, if such a cream is to be used for removing make-up... Try substituting witch hazel for some of the water.

Witch hazel occurs in this recipe that carried the title ‘face cream’.
27 gm Beeswax
33 ml Olive oil
8 ml Glycerine
8 ml Witch hazel
5 ml Water
19 gm Grated soap The soap in this recipe can provide the fragrance and acts to emulsify the mixture. Include the soap, glycerine and witch hazel in the water phase. (I used ‘Lux soap flakes’ as my soap ingredient).

Massage cream... Although called a cream, this product was more of grease. The ingredients were 8 gm Beeswax + 32 ml FGMO + 60 gm Anhydrous lanolin (wool fat). These were simply melted together and whisked to combine. Adjusting the amount of FGMO up or down will alter the consistency.

I have a recipe from Ettamarie Peterson

She makes a solid hand lotion just by mixing warm olive oil and melted beeswax, she uses a ratio of 3 beeswax to 4 olive oil.

Rick Green uses a similar recipe and adds coconut oil and ‘essence of lavender’, he sells this under the title ‘Bee Balm’.

The following recipe was published in an American Magazine “Country Living” where it was offered as a ‘gardener’s hand cream’. I have metricated the original quantities so that anyone can understand them.
240 ml Grated beeswax
(why measured by volume is beyond me!)
120 ml Jojoba oil
30 ml Aloe vera gel
30 ml Vitamin E oil
120 ml Sweet almond oil
9 drops Peppermint essential oil
9 drops Orange essential oil Combine the grated beeswax, Jojoba oil, and aloe vera gel in the top of a double boiler or in a glass measure in a microwave oven. Melt (about 45 seconds in a microwave oven or up to 3 minutes in a double boiler). Remove from the source of heat and whisk until cool, adding vitamin E oil, almond oil, and essential oils as it begins to thicken. Spoon cream into a jar, cover, and store 1 to 2 days in a cool, dark place.

I also offer this American skin cream recipe that has not been tested by myself.
70 gm Beeswax
115 gm Anhydrous lanolin
160 ml Baby oil
180 ml Water
5 gm Borax (sodium borate)
5 drops Fragrant essential oil Method... Use the method of the first recipe.

Emollient lotion, Another untested American recipe...
80 gm Beeswax
150 gm FGMO
20 gm Isopropyl miristate
100 gm PEG 400 mono stearate
50 gm Lanolin
20 gm Stearic acid
1.5 gm Propylparaben
1.5 gm Methylparaben
7 gm Borax
570 ml Water
9 drops Fragrance Method... Use the method of the first recipe.

A Hand lotion recipe that contains beeswax and honey...
16 gm Beeswax
64 ml FGMO
20 gm Honey
30 ml Glycerine (glycerol)
15 gm soap flakes
5 drops of lemon juice Method... Melt the beeswax and FGMO at about 70° C and stir together in one water bath whilst raising the honey, soap and glycerine to 39° C in another water bath. allow the wax and oil mixture to cool to 39° C and combine the two mixtures. When combined, but only partially whisked add the lemon juice, then finish the whisking. (this recipe may benefit from an addition of about 20 gm of lanolin.)

A soft soothing cream that has many purposes can be made as follows...

20 gm Beeswax
20 ml Olive oil, Jojoba or FGMO
20 ml Coconut oil
20 ml Glycerine
19 ml Water
1 gm Borax Method... Use the method of the first recipe. One experiment that I have intended to try and have never gotten around to, would be to substitute 20 grams of soap flakes for the 1 gram of borax.

Aloe vera can be liquidised in a food mixer and the Juice strained out. This liquid can be used to replace some of the aqueous components in any of the above recipes. Coconut oil or olive oil can be used to substitute the FGMO where it occurs. If coconut oil is used then no other fragrance should be added.

Using an electric beater or whisk is essential, no amount of hand stirring can produce the smoothness that makes these creams so luxurious.

Work accurately... Use electronic scales and check them against known weights, use photographic measuring cylinders to calibrate the cups and scoops used for volumetric measures. Strike off excess powder from spoons with a knife to ensure consistency every time you use them. Keep records and seek the opinions of others as to the way the products feel and work.

Homemade Lip Salve Recipes

A beautiful smile transforms your entire face.

A beautiful smile can transform your entire face, and lip color can enhance your beautiful smile. But applying color to your lips is useless if your lips are chapped or not smooth and healthy. The following homemade lip salve and lip balm recipes will ensure you have a smooth, beautiful smile.

Methods
1. Ideally, a lip salve should heal, soothe and smooth your lips. It helps to protect them from harsh weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or wind. Lip balms or salves can also heal areas that result from bad habits, such as chewing on your lips when you are nervous.

Lip salves can be easily and inexpensively made at home by melting common items found in every household, such as petroleum jelly, beeswax and solid shortenings like Crisco. According to the All Free Crafts website, you should only use beeswax that contains cosmetic or food-grade ingredients. Do not overheat these substances in your microwave or double boiler; they only need to be melted.

For a simple and deliciously flavored lip balm, melt a small amount of solid vegetable shortening in the microwave or double boiler. Add a bit of flavored drink mix such as Kool-Aid; some good flavors to try are cherry, raspberry or watermelon.

Cocoa powder added to equal parts of melted petroleum jelly and solid shortening makes a wonderful chocolate-flavored lip gloss.

Cranberry-flavored lip salve can be created by microwaving 1 tbsp. sweet almond oil, approximately 8-10 cranberries and 1 tsp. honey. Do not overheat; microwave only until the mixture starts to boil. Crush the berries, stir to release the color and then drain through a tea strainer or cheesecloth.

To store your homemade lip salve, you can use old lip gloss pots, containers or tubes. Make sure they are clean and sterile before storing your new lip salve. Wash them with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry. Sterilize them by wiping them out with a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol, then rinse and dry again.
Recycling
2. We all have old tubes of lipsticks in our makeup drawers. Often the color is not just right, or the shade is too dark or light. Remove the lipstick from its tube with a toothpick or small utensil, and combine it with other shades you have. You may have to experiment to find just the right color combination.

When you have achieved the perfect shade, place 1/2 tsp. lipstick, 1 tsp. beeswax and 1/2 tsp. petroleum jelly in a small, microwave-safe dish. Microwave for just a few seconds to melt the ingredients, then stir well and add to a prepared container. For extra smoothing benefits, you can also add in a couple drops of Vitamin E, squeezed from the capsule. Adding 4-6 drops of peppermint oil can add a refreshing scent and flavor.

how to make Black SalveBlack Salve Recipe

2 Tablespoons Bee’s Wax
3 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter
3 Tablespoons Shea Butter

2 Tablespoons Jojoba Oil
1 Tablespoon Vitamin E
1 Tablespoon Honey Powder (some grocery stores will order it for you)
2 Tablespoons Activated Charcoal Powder (look in vitamin store)
3 Tablespoons Kaolin Clay
Optional : Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils - depending on what you’re using the salve for

8 1/2 ounce clear jars

Black Salve is touted to do everything these days, including curing cancer. I will be staying off the cancer topic, but this is the old fashioned salve everyone used to have in the house. What it does best is absorb toxins. The common use for it is to put a glob of it on a bee sting, slivers or a cut. It sucks out the poisons! No home should be without it.

First Step:
Put Bees wax, cocoa butter and shea butter in a small pot and heat. You want to keep it at 180 Circulon 3 Quart Covered Saucepan degree for at least 15 minutes. This is easier than it sounds. Just heat it on medium high until it is melted. Turn off the burner and let it sit. It should still be over 180 in 15 minutes. :)

Second Step:
Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until well blended. The easy place to buy Activated Charcoal is in your local health food store or herbal medicine store. You’ll probably have to open a lot of capsules, but it is the stuff you need for this.

Third Step:
Feel free to add any relevant herbal extracts to the formula just before you spoon it in. You want to make sure it is very cooled off before adding any extracts, essential oils, or fragrance.

Fourth Step:
Once it is smooth, spoon into 1/2 ounce jars. Give a jar to everyone you know. They will thank you for it!

A LITTLE BEEWAX INFO
Beeswax is a byproduct of honey production. It makes wonderful lip balms, hand lotions, hand creams, moisturizers, in cosmetics, wood finishes, waxes, leather polishes; waterproofing products, and dental molds.
It is impervious to water and unaffected by mildew. It has a melting point of 143 to 148 degrees F. and should only be heated using a double boiler as it is flammable when subjected to fire and flames. It is pliable at 100 degrees F.

Beeswax is produced by the (female) worker honeybees. The wax is secreted from wax glands on the underside of the bee’s abdomen and is molded into six-sided cells which are filled with honey, then capped with more wax. When honey is harvested, the top layer of wax that covers the cells, the cappings, must be removed from each hexagon-shaped cell.

Bees use their wax to “glue” together the wooden frames in their hive, and that must be scraped off so the frames can be separated. The beeswax, which contains some honey, bee parts, and other impurities, must be melted and filtered or strained.
Most beeswax is gold or yellow but can also be in shades of orange, brown, etc. The color of the wax is in most part determined by the type of plants the bees collect nectar from. Beeswax has a delightful, light fragrance of honey, flower nectar and pollen.
Beeswax makes superior, slow burning candles. Beeswax burns more beautifully than any other wax. It exudes a faint, natural fragrance of honey and pollen. When candles are made with the proper size of wicking, they are smokeless, dripless, and burn with a bright flame.

If you wonder why beeswax is so expensive, consider this: It has been estimated that bees must fly 150,000 miles to produce one pound of wax. Bees must eat about six pounds of honey to secrete a pound of wax. For every 100 pounds of honey a beekeeper harvests, only one to two pounds of beeswax are produced.

BEESWAX RECIPES
Moisturing Vitamin E Cream

4 oz. sweet almond oil
1 oz. beeswax
2 oz. water
10 drops Vitamin E oil
10 drops lavender essential oil

Melt the oil and the wax in a double boiler, Remove from heat, add water, and stir thoroughly.
Add your Vitamin E, essential oil and stir continuously until cool. This cream is very moisturizing and emollient.
It is nice for rough, dry, or chapped complexions and should help promote healthy looking skin.
After you have added the essential oil and the cream is still warm enough to pour, carefully pour it into Salve Jars or Metal Tins, we offer both below.

Antiseptic Balm ( Use instead of antiseptic ointment, this is far superior! )
Ingredients:
2 ounces Beeswax
3 ounces Sweet Almond Oil
1 ounce Jojoba Oil
20 drops Wheatgerm Oil
20 drops Myrrh Essential Oil
20 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

( Makes enough to fill 4 each 1 ounce salve jars or 1 ounce metal tins )

A rule of thumb is 2 parts oil to one part beeswax. Simply heat the Sweet Almond and Jojoba oil in a saucepan and add Beeswax. If you want a thin consistency ( such as a cream or Vaseline ) add only a little bit of Beeswax. Want it thicker like wax? Just add more Beeswax.

Allow the base to cool down to see what the consistency is like. If it’s too thick, add more Sweet Almond oil and reheat, too thin?, add more Beeswax.

As the base is cooling add the essential oils to enhance the healing effect of the balm. These essential oils can be found in our Essential Oil List.
After you have added the essential oil and the lip balm is still warm enough to pour, carefully pour it into Salve Jars or Metal Tins, we offer both below.

Herbal Salve
Make different Herbal Salves simply by changing/mixing differnet essential oils!
Ingredients:
2 ounces Beeswax
3 ounces Sweet Almond Oil
1 ounce Jojoba Oil
1/2 oz. Canola oil
40 drops total essential oil of your preference

( Makes enough to fill 4 each 1 ounce salve jars or 1 ounce metal tins )

Simply heat the Sweet Almond, Canola oil and Jojoba oil in a saucepan and add Beeswax.

Use Bayleaf Essential oil for relieving rheumatism.
Use Bergamot Essential oil for colds, bronchitis systems, i.e. chest rub.
Use Caraway Essential oil for antiseptic quality.
Use Cardamon Essential oil for aphrodisiac quality. Use Clary Sage Essential oil for anti-ainflammatory, aphrodisiac and scalp problems
Use Cedar Essential oil for relieving Chronic anxiety and stress.
Use Citronella Essential oil for making a insect repellent salve.
Use Eucalyptus Essential oil for chest rub, relieves congestion, eases breathing.
Use Frankincense Essential oil for asthma and other respiratory problems.
Use Gardenia Essential oil for chest rub, said to relieve flu conditions, fever, hypertension and palpitations.
Use Juniper Essential oil for emotionally cleansing effect. Calms the nerves.
Use Orange Essential oil for a lighter body lotion, said to relax, relieve sexual apprehension, and is antiseptic and antibactericidal.
Use Patchouli Essential oil for antiseptic, aphrodisiac qualities.
Use Rosemary Essential oil for relieving tired muscles.
Use Tea Tree Essential oil for Antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral qualities.

Itch Relief Salve ( Good for posion ivy, posion oak )
1 pint Sweet Olive Oil
2 ounces Beeswax
1 tablespoon Chickweed Powder
1 tablespoon Comfrey Powder

Put chickweed and comfrey powder into sweet olive oil and simmer 3 hours. Strain and add beeswax. Pour into salve jars or tins.

Coconut Butter Body Moisturizer ( Good for wind and sunburned skin )
Ingredients
2 tablespoons beeswax
2 teaspoons distilled water
4 oz. cocoa butter
4 tablespoons sweet almond
2 tablespoons coconut oil

Melt the beeswax over low heat with the water. Spoon in cocoa butter and blend. Gradually blend in oils. Pour into glass jar.
The lotion will thicken as it cools.

Vaseline Type Jelly
This makes a great vaseline type jelly.
1 ounce (weight) beeswax
1/2 cup baby oil

Melt the beeswax in a microwave or a double boiler. Stir in the baby oil.
Remove the mixture from the heat and stir until cool.

Skin Cream ( by Elaine White )
2 1/2 ounces (weight) beeswax
4 ounces (weight) lanolin
2/3 cup baby or mineral oil
3/4 cup water
1 teaspoon borax (sodium borate, CP)
Fragrant oil (optional)

Melt the oil, lanolin and beeswax to 160 degrees F. Heat the borax and water in a separate container to 160 degrees F. Be sure the beeswax is melted and the borax is dissolved. Add the water mixture to the oil mixture while stirring.
When a white cream forms, stir slowly until the mixture cools to 100 degrees F. Pour the cream into small, wide-mouth jars.

Pain Releif Salve
1 tablespoon Chickweed powder
1 tablespoon Wormwood Powder
10 drops Tea Tree oil
2 pints Sweet Olive Oil
3 ounces Beeswax

Mix together chickweed, wormwood powder, add the mixed herbs to sweet olive oil and simmer 3 hours. Strain and add beeswax and Tea Tree Oil. Pour into salve containers.

HAND CREAM
2 ounces beeswax
1 cup sweet almond oil
1 cup water
10 drops essential oil (if desired, for fragrance)
Heat beeswax and sweet almond oil until the wax melts. In another container, heat water until warm. Both mixtures should be warm, but not so hot as to be uncomfortable to the touch.
Place warm water in a blender. Cover the blender, leaving open the small opening in the cover. With the blender running on high speed, slowly pour in the beeswax-oil mixture in a thin stream. When most of the oil has been added, the mixture should begin to thicken.
At this point, add the essential oil. Continue to add oil and blend until the mixture is sufficiently thickened. Turn off the blender. You should have a thick cream. Spoon into salve jars or metal tins.

Body Lotion
This is a great recipe that does not spoil easily without the aid of refrigeration. It makes about 2 cups of lotion.

1 cup of aloe vera gel
1 teaspoon of lanolin 1 teaspoon of pure vitamin E oil
1/3 cup of coconut oil
1/2 ounce of beeswax
3/4 cup of almond oil
Up to 1 and 1/2 teapoons of essential oil of your choice or more to prolong scent

Place aloe vera gel, lanolin and vitamin E oil in a blender or food processor. Place coconut oil and beeswax in a 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup, microwave on high for 30 second and stir. Repeat in ten second blocks until fully melted.

Stir in almond oil, reheating if necessary. Run blender at low to medium speed, then pour in melted oils in a thin stream. As the oils is blended in the cream will turn white and the blender’s motor will begin to grind. As soon as you have a mayonaise-like consistency, stop motor, add essential oils and pulse blend. do not overblend Transfer cream to glass jars while still warm because it thickens quickly.
This recipe was found in the Winter 97 issue of Handcraft Illustrated Magazine. The article was written by Amy Jenner

3/4 cup sweet almond oil
1/3 cup coconut oil or cocoa butter
1 Teaspoon lanolin
1/2 ounce grated beeswax
Melt ingredients together over low heat and cool to room temperature. When cool, add:
2/3 cup rosewater
1/2 cup aloe vera gel
1 - 2 drops rose blend EO
5 drops Vitamin E oil
Whip all ingredients to a smooth consistency. Store in a sterile covered jar.

Solid Perfume
Ingredients:
3 parts Sweet Almond or Jojoba oil
2 parts White beeswax
1 part Cosmetic Grade Fragrance Oil, choose from our huge line of Rachel’s Cosmetic Grade Fragrance Oils
Melt all ingredients over double boiler until well mixed and integrated. Pour into containers and let cool.

LIP GLOSS
2 teaspoons beeswax
2 tablespoons, sweet almond oil or coconut oil
5 drops essential oil (such as orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, coconut or mint)
2 drops vitamin E capsule
(optional: to tint, up to 1/4 teaspoon lipstick)
Melt the oil and beeswax together. Remove from heat. If coloring, stir in the lipstick. When the mixture has cooled to lukewarm, stir in essential oil and the vitamin E. Transfer to a small container.
Stir occasionally while cooling . If a thicker gloss is desired, increase the amount of beeswax. (Experiment with other additions such as baking chocolate, crushed peppermint candy, cocoa butter, vanilla bean, oil of cinnamon, oil of camphor or eucalyptus for soothing chapped lips, wheat germ oil, etc.
Add oil-based ingredients to the oil phase, and water-soluble ingredients to the water phase.) This is a great way to use up leftover or too-dark lipstick.

BEESWAX WOOD FINISH (for bare wood)
1 pound beeswax
1 pint turpentine (odorless, if you can find it)
1 pint boiled linseed oil
Melt wax. Remove wax from heat source, then stir in turpentine and oil. Before applying to bare wood, warm the mixture to achieve better penetration. Apply with a soft cloth, let dry, then buff with a wool cloth. Old coats can be removed with an organic solvent such as turpentine. This can also be used on leather. (Another wood finish can be made with 1 pound beeswax and 1 pint turpentine, omitting the linseed oil.)

BEESWAX WOOD CONDITIONER (for previously finished wood)
1 ounce beeswax
1 pint turpentine
2 cups water
1 ounce Ivory soap flakes
Shred wax into turpentine; cover and leave in a warm spot. Shake container from time to time.
Bring 2 cups water to a boil.
Add soap and stir until dissolved. Add it to the wax/turpentine, stirring briskly until an emulsion forms.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: Beeswax melts at 143-148 degrees. It is pliable at 100 degrees. All waxes will ignite explosively when they reach their flash point temperature. To melt beeswax safely, place it in the top of a double boiler, or place the container of wax in a larger container of hot water. Do not melt beeswax in a microwave, as it could become hot enough to ignite. Do not cover the beeswax while melting in a container of water, as steam may condense on the inside of the cover resulting in water in the wax.

MEASURING TIP : To measure a small amount of beeswax, grate it before melting.

MB001 Moringa: Natures Medicinal Cabinet
Moringa may provide the boost in energy, nutrition and health you’ve been seeking. It’s a remarkable tree whose leaves, pods and flowers have seven times the Vitamin C found in oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, three times the iron of spinach, four times as much calcium as milk and three times the potassium of bananas. And its medicinal properties are no less impressive. Besides providing a natural energy boost, people also report their immune system strengthened, skin condition restored, blood pressure controlled, headaches and migraines handled, diabetes sugar level managed, inflammations and arthritis pains reduced, tumors restricted and ulcers healed. Excited laboratory researchers have already confirmed many of these results, and work is continuing.

Moringa also has a well-documented detoxifying effect. Universities around the world have studied Moringa’s ability to purify water—attaching itself to harmful material and bacteria, and allowing them to be expelled as waste. The evidence points to this same process going on inside your body.

The result is long-lasting energy without hyperactivity...a nerve system at rest...a blood system not under pressure...a gland and hormone system in balance.

This book has everything you need to know—Moringa’s medicinal properties, nutritional content, where to get it, the best way to grow it, and how to prepare Moringa for best results.

Sanford Hoist raises a small plantation of Moringa trees at his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He is best known for his books on health and life improvement, including LifeCycle—which provides a healthy and natural approach to life. He was a ranger with the U.S. Forest Service before graduating from MIT and UCLA, then built a successful career in computer systems. He a single father of two wonderful daughters, and is currently chairman of LifeWorks Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to life improvement.

“Scientifically speaking, Moringa sounds like magic. It can rebuild weak bones, enrich anemic blood and enable a malnourished mother tonurse her starving baby. Doctors use it to treat diabetes in West Africa and high blood pressure in India .... And it’s not only good for you, it’s delicious.”

News Report

The Malunggay (Sajina, Moringa) tree.

MORINGA, MALUNGGAY, SAJINA

Moringa is the English name. It is called Malunggay in Philippines and Sajina in Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. It grows very wildly in hot tropical climate.

Moringa is a wonderful herb known all over the world— but only recently in the U.S. It may provide the boost in energy, nutrition and health youíve been seeking. This book reveals Moringaís nutritional content, medicinal properties, where to get it, the best results.

Moringa is a remarkable discovery, which can make a tremendous difference in your health and quality of life. Mounting scientific evidence shows what has been known for thousands of years by people in the tropical parts of the world: Moringa is natureís medicine cabinet.

It is best known as an excellent source of nutrition and a natural energy booster. Loaded with nutrients, vitamins and amino acids, it replenishes your body and provides what you need to get through a hectic weekday or active weekend.

As the candles multiply on top of your birthday cake, you may find yourself slowing down and saying, ìI just donít feel eighteen any more.î Moringa gives back some of the energy you thought was lost.

Yet this is not a sugar-based energy. Itís not something, which makes you hyper for some period of intense activity then leaves you drained. In fact, Moringa is also relaxing...it helps to reduce blood pressure and assure a good nightís sleep. How does it contribute more energy and greater relaxation at the same time?

The answer seems to be Moringaís well-documented detoxifying effect. University laboratories around the world have studied Moringaís ability to purify water...attaching itself to harmful material and bacteria, and allowing them to be expelled as waste. The evidence points to this same process going on inside your body.

It produces long-lasting energy without hyperactivity... a nerve system at rest... a blood system not under pressure...a gland and hormone system in balance.

Other health benefits identified by people who use Moringa continue this same pattern: immune system strengthened, skin condition restored, blood pressure controlled, headaches and migraines handled, diabetes sugar level managed, inflammations and arthritis pains reduced, tumors restricted and ulcers healed.

A body thatís not fighting damaging internal elements is better able to use the nutrients, which come into it to build healthy skin, bone and muscles, as well as the all-important hormones, which keep your body in balance.

And Moringa is loaded with nutrients. Each ounce of Moringa contains seven times the Vitamin C found in oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, three times the iron of spinach, four times as much calcium as milk and three times the potassium of bananas.

One of the best attributes of Moringa is that it is also quite tasty and a welcome addition to your kitchen. The leaves, pods and flowers of this versatile tree are all edible, each with its own flavor. They can be served fresh with meals, or be reduced to powder and used as a food supplement.
