What is the downside of her publishing pictures of herself with little clothing on a social networking site. Even if it is just friends, or even friends of friends...how far could these pictures go?

Being that she’s 18 years old not much you can do, however, she should be careful when she starts sending out Christmas cards of herself.
To: Chickensoup
The greater danger is not that the pictures will be seen
by someone unintended, the real danger is the mindset of
a daughter that feels it is OK to post presumably alluring pictures of herself - anywhere!

As most have said, what seems innocent and harmless today may not seem so in the future.
The worst thing is the lack of control as to what happens to the files. You just do not know.
I advise my daughter thus; do not have photos taken of you with a glass in your hand, do not have photos of you smoking anything, do not have photos of you with PDAs of either sex, DO keep an eye out for backgrounds of photos. She is 30 and can do what she wants but I tell her, you just don’t know.
My grandmother gave me the advice that was passed down to her about the glass of adult beverages.
Good luck!

toothpaste / tube and all that, but... you might want to fine out why she felt to need to post them.

I’m not familiar w/ those personalized website but I would think you can just right-click and ‘Save As’ to your computer. Not sure about that but that would be my guess.

Try controlling a 14 year old boy who does.

She should know that any time she applies for a job, her potential employer will be checking the social networks. So will potential boyfriends and potential in-laws.

They could go viral...depending on how many friends she has in her network, and then how many friends her friends have.

The correct question is “Would there be an UPSIDE to posting such pictures?”
The answer would be “No.”
To: Chickensoup
Sounds like anyone who can see her site has access to copying the pics. Not quite - the profile photo you use to ID yourself on your site is viewable by the public. Anything else is hidden until you become a friend of the person; or until one of your mutual friends shares the photos.

She lives with dad now. I was going to put a bug in his ear about it. He has some influence. Just working my way through posts...this was my next suggestion after reading that your daughter doesn't really listen to you.
Hopefully, he'll be able to get through to her. Use some of the news articles that have been linked up to now that show what can go wrong.

I put a picture of me in pajamas on the Undead Thread one New Year’s Eve. (Big, pink, flannel pajamas, with cows.)

I'm sure you've heard it before, but some kids just have to learn for themselves. You can tell them all this until you're blue in the face, but they don't seem to think the rules or consequences apply to them. They only learn through experience. Their
own experience.
However, you can be there to help pick up the pieces.
To: A.Hun; Chickensoup
If shes not nude, dont worry about it. Exactly. If she's over 18 and she's actually wearing something (even if it's just a bikini), there's little to nothing to worry about.
To: Chickensoup
She may want to reconsider.
Colleges and companies are now checking websites like FB and using it to help inform them.

With a cell phone?
I’d never allow my kid, esp. a girl to have a photo capable cell phone.
Thankfully my kids are grown so I never had to deal with that.

unfortunately whats done is done, once it's out there, well it usually means forever, i’ve found things of a friend from many years back, yea i mean years back , she should be told of these consequences and thoroughly grounded from the Internet for a long time to add to the “ now you can have free time to think abou’t this , young lady “ maybe she to old to some, but if she still lives at home , then you still make the rules, my oldest is 17, and my youngest ( a girl) is 14, i believe what i pass on, god forbid it ever happens to me, i’ll strangle her, then she wouldn't have to ever worry abou’t it, good luck
