According to Robert Temple, a moat theory explains the water weathering of the Sphinx without hypothesizing that it dates back to an earlier period of more rainfall than the present. I will not address his other hypotheses, which I do not find persuasive, that the Sphinx was the jackal [wild dog] Anubis and the face seen on the Sphinx is that of the Middle Kingdom pharaoh Amenemhet II, though I note the original Sphinx has been reworked and the head re-carved... Assuming the argument that the Sphinx sat in a pool, either the water level around the Sphinx was the same as that of the surrounding water table, or the walls and floor of the pool were sealed up and watertight (and any artificial walls, such as on the eastern end, were strong enough to withstand the water pressure). (Note that the current western end of the Sphinx Enclosure is at a much higher elevation than the eastern end [see the figure on page 534 of The Sphinx Mystery by Robert Temple with Olivia Temple, Inner Traditions, 2009], yet clear water erosion is shown at the higher elevations at the western end. Since water seeks its own level, if the water in a supposed moat reached to the height of the western end of the Sphinx Enclosure, then the eastern end as well as the walls along the northern and southern sides must have been built up to a comparable height as the western end. This is independent of whether or not the eastern wall of the enclosure [= western wall of the Sphinx Temple] has a base of natural bedrock or was entirely composed of cut and placed stone.) I believe most Egyptian temples had sacred lakes or sacred pools. But if the Sphinx is way older than pharaonic Egypt, it may not have had one.
According to Edgar Cayce, there is a depository of hidden records buried somewhere around the Sphinx. It may have already been discovered, but it’s contents once more hidden away because what they say may be more than the average civilization can take.
You just have to keep it from Obama voters.

I always thought the face of the sphinx looked familiar.
Equally it's no wonder that no Europeans were ever interested in carting it home as a “souvenir”.

Yep, Schoch points out that the Sphinx couldn’t have been surrounded by a moat, and gives the reasons; he’s also the geologist who confirmed the earlier statements by non-geologists that there’s water erosion on the Sphinx, the walls of the Sphinx enclosure, and some other nearby structures — but not the Giza Pyramids. The reasons the erosion must have happened prior to the 4th dynasty include texts (New Kingdom copies of Old Kingdom records regarding repairs made to the Sphinx by Khufu; Egyptologist Rainer Stadelmann won’t go as far as 7000 years old, but does admit that the Great Sphinx antedates Khafre) and Old Kingdom-era repairs covering water erosion marks on the Sphinx and at least one of the temples in front of the Sphinx. Also, the nearby mudbrick pyramids at Saqqara, built by the 2nd Dynasty, don’t show rain-induced damage, hence they weren’t around when the Sphinx (or whatever was there before) was getting rained on.

That’s what Schoch is getting at — a moat isn’t plausible.
I also read somewhere that they did find something here in the last couple of years but what that is, is unknown. Can’t really remember so don’t quote me on that. :-)

I’m not all that comfortable granting much credence to Cayce, as I’m Christian, but I am familiar with his visions, and they were interesting, to say the least.
As far as Enoch, you asked if there were not several versions. There is 1 and 2. Ethiopic and Slavonic. The authenticity of 1, Ethiopic, is not at question; John referenced passages from it, as did Jesus Christ. But, I don’t question it’s lack of inclusion in the canon, since it is rather wild and quite disturbing, if taken to it’s logical conclusion.
The authenticity of 2, Slavonic, is questioned by many, who believe it to be a fraud from the middle ages. It does purport to complete the “missing” mystery aspects of 1 Enoch, so I suppose there might be some value in it. But, it remains highly questionable, both in historical authenticity and in Jewish and Christian religious aspects, much moreso than 1. It veers into distinctly occult territory. and has underpinned several modern forms of witchcraft, pertaining particularly to the purported lesser and greater “Key Of Solomon,” the mere possession of which supposedly leads to death.
The missing but anciently referenced “Apocalypse of Noah” would be a very interesting read as well.
