Interesting arguments in the comment section under the source article.

What’s all this about Haig? Was he more reckless with the lives of his soldiers than was the average WWI commander?

And note the person who makes this accusation (calls Haig insane, in fact) goes on (somehow) to a rant about how 9/11 was a government conspiracy.

Anyway, makes for some interesting reading... if you have some time you want to use non-productively.

Field Marshal Haig was popular immediately after the War, but the greatest damage to his reputation in the popular mind was the 1969 movie Oh! What a Loverly War. Even at the time, there was military criticism of him. Churchill later defended him, but had some criticism for him. General Pershing called him the man who won the war.

World War I was an horrible butchery, but that was something Haig had no control over.

Thanks for your comment. I don’t know a lot about that war. I’m in the mood to learn more.

The British Expeditionary Force was cannon fodder; the British commanders didn't swerve from their useless tactics throughout the conflict, and wanted the Americans to merely serve as more cannon fodder. Pershing would not have it, and it was the US Army that defeated the Germans. The French eventually figured out how to do it, but didn't have the manpower any longer, or the political will. The French command had the great good sense to send their best to help train the AEF.
