Should Administration Fund New Breakthroughs in Alternative Energy
Green Energy News ^ | 5/10/09 | energyman

One of the technologies that seems a likely candidate for this funding is the rebirth of cold fusion, or now known as a low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) such as featured in a 60 Minutes TV news magazine segment on April 19.

This is a great story and the company they mention was just profiled on 60 Minutes. We need to think big to solve our energy problems. I found their website, here is a link in case you are interested. www.energetictechnologies.com

How do they know it’s a breakthrough and not just another white elephant?

Yep big thinking will do it. Like no more drilling, no more coal, no more nuclear. That’s thinking big. Really big stoopid.

Our present energy “problem” can easily be solved with the resources and technology that we have today.

They talk about funding “breakthroughs” as if the money will miraculously ensure a new, workable solution will arise.

These people are not intelligent, IMO.

Until you do the research and even build a functional prototype, you don't. Nobody knew nuclear power would work until it did.

This is why the very notion of the government making decisions about which processes should be implemented is unbelievably stupid.

An example, right now we're mandating CFL bulbs be used instead of incandescents, because they're roughly five times more energy efficient. This will lock us into a probably obsolete technology when LED fixture come on line, which are several times more efficient than CFLs.

Yes, lets search for the Holy Grail of energy and not actually do anything. I just know there is a pony in there somewhere. Good plan?

I'm sure there is a secret that the evil energy companies are hiding the will give us all free energy for zero cost and it will also provide jobs for everyone without polluting anything.

Plus CFL's create a huge disposal problem due to their mercury content. Even with LED lights available, there are still some niches for incandescent bulbs. Appliance light bulbs for use in ovens is one. I'd sure hate for a CFL to break inside an oven, and LED's don't take heat very well.

I would go for Anti-gravity first. Yes it’s a long shot but look at the payoff - we could send Obama to the moon for next to nothing.

“How do they know it’s a breakthrough and not just another white elephant?”

One way you know that scientific progress has been made is
if the people involved are actually scientist in some form or fashion - as opposed to science impaired beaurocrats like al gore and the other 66,000 Acorn family members that have been recently put on government payrolls.

White elephants are promoted by politicians. Scientists ethically don’t depart from facts nor do they avoid discussion of ancilliary effects.

Change its name from Cold Fusion to Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR) - that’s the ticket. It’s working so well for Climate Change aka Global Warming.

Simple: You never know beforehand. The market will decide and afterwards you can look the results. That goes for any kind of technology. Also, the market doesn't care for ideology. Currently prices for solar panels are dropping by 50%. If that trend continues, nuclear will be a white elephant. If not, it's the other way around. Basically, it's a bet and the best you can do is come up with an educated guess (which is also the concept behind a stock exchange).

Our present energy “problem” can easily be solved with the resources and technology that we have today.

Of course. There is no doubt whatsoever that human ingenuity will overcome any energy problem. And it could be done in serval ways. Nuclear, coal mining / CTL, even a complete switch to renewables is absolutely doable. Cover Nevada with solar cells and / or Texas with wind turbines and then do something like that for storage:

Merkel launches building of revolutionary hybrid power plant

Problem solved. The only question is and always will be: At what cost? And that's an economic issue, not an ideological one so best the market decides.

But they are funding new technologies and they are so sure of success they are killing the oil, gas, coal and nuclear industry. Soon we will all be very happy with our new wind and solar powered energy.

I think it’s all moot.

The oligarchy is NOT going to let anything out into the public arena which would individualize power production and use . . .

thereby limiting their !!!!!CONTROL!!!!!

unless and until they have many other control mechanisms in place . . . such as dog-chipped people.

The answer is easy....

If the government funds it with our tax dollars, it’s a white elephant.

If private funds are invested, it’s likely a breakthrough.

Last I heard, the official DOE policy was that they would potentially fund cold fusion proposals that pass through the normal peer review process.

I can’t believe this company was profiled (or maybe I can w/ CBS’ journalistic standards). What is a “SuperWave”? It’s pretty magical, since it applies not only to cold fusion but to disease too. Every link to a publication (none in a peer reviewed physics or chemistry journal) are by this guy Dardik. They read more like philosophical infomercials than scientific papers.
