As a relative NEWBIE you can be partially forgiven for the error in your ways. Your error is narrow mindedness and focus.
You don’t understand the subtleties of Free Republic and the vastly diverse interests that are daily on display. You also illustrate the fact you don’t understand American idol and can’t begin to comprehend the Idol discussions.
It is fashionable among snobs to dis Idol. That is the result of misunderstanding what is taking place. Idol is a competition, a good old fashioned competition basic as Apple Pie and the Red, White and Blue. The competition is the top rated TV show and near the end draws up to 50 million votes per night. The year on year advertisers are the best of American companies....AT&T, Coca Cola and Ford Motor.
Idol is OPPORTUNITY spelled with all CAPs. At the outset there are more than a hundred thousand contestants in preliminaries all across the country. It is open to all and near enough to be convenient for any serious entrant. The joy of watching the early shows is spotting the capable and laughing and maybe crying with the totally incapable. In the later stages one can see something that is appealing and vote for the person or persons having that appeal. America is given and unabashedly takes the opportunity to make that opinion count by voting. The contestants are mostly young. Most have some ability and are willing to risk total humiliation for a chance to perform in the big time.
Presently, the competition is near the end. It has been winnowed from more than a hundred thousand to just four. after tonite there will be just three. Three who have worked with the absolute best people in the business who mentor them to hone their talent and scrape away that which needs to be sanded off. The opportunity to compete and be a part of such a fantastic undertaking is almost without parallel.
It is too late this year, but if there is a next year, open up your mind and expand your horizon by watching the opening shows keeping in mind what you are seeing is but preliminary to fantastic opportunity, wealth and a life changing fame. To be a contestant is not for the weak of purpose or lazy.
The thread analyzes the purpose and talent and drive. As always, Free Republic gets down the the very essence of most everything, including American Idol.
I actually think of it as more of an escape. For 1 hour we can shut down the overload of politics and the dire state of our country. I used to think the way you do until I got hooked on Idol 3 years ago. It's not a bad diversion.
The thread analyzes the purpose and talent and drive..........................and who has too many tatoos showing, who’s too gay, who’s cute enough to vote for, and who tells the most compelling story about grandma’s cancer. Once in a while there’s a serious discussion about singing talent.
Applause, applause!
Auntie Retrokitten is generous, but not THAT generous. LOL
She likes Limited Too, but she's pretty much out of their sizes. It's so hard to find stuff for the tweeners. Girls stuff is too kiddie and juniors stuff is too racy.
My sister in-law, God love her, I know she wants her little girl to stay a little girl, so she picks out very little girl type clothes. Very frilly dresses, floral leggings, turtlenecks, and pants with elastic waists. She will NOT admit that Retro-niece is getting hips, so she buys her children's plus sized pants instead of going up to the juniors sizes. Retro-niece HATES the stuff.
IMO, you can get contemporary tweener clothes without going too adult, it just takes some effort.
Speaking of backlash...I wonder if the current vicious attacks on Miss California by Perez Hilton and his Gay Mafia might result in a backlash against ALL gays, including Adam?
Begging for a Backlash:

.....Why is it that we cant stand Kara......
Didn’t she use to be a CNN foreign correspondent?
I became an Idol convert a couple of years ago. I, too, thought it was the height of silliness.
BUT...then I actually started watching it.
To me, the wonder of the show is seeing them evolve as the year goes on. At the beginning of the season all of them are rather amateurish and awkward. As the weeks pass, we watch live as they hone their talents, their stage presentation, their costuming, etc. It’s amazing to consider last night’s performances and compare them to what these four were doing just two months ago.
Somehow it all seems very “American” to me. I love it.
.....I thought it was her best night so far.....
Aside from the singing, she was very much alive and into the total onstage event. She smiled as in command. Her eyes were animated and sparkling. She radiated success. She came out of the shell.
For me, Adam is a very talented semipro who is aging.
The Idol should be young ..... it should be Allison
Oh, I totally forgot about Abercrombie! Thanks!
I really don't get the buzz on that guy or the judge's reaction every week. He drags out the same screeching notes every genre, every song. To me, he's like watching Liza Minelli getting her nails pulled off while fronting an 80s hair band.
I used to like Danny, but I think Chris is going to pull it out. He's original. A little goofy, but sort of John Mayerish.
Alison's out tonight.

LOL. I know it sounds crazy... but Lambert might have one of my favorite voices ever.
I've bought quite a few of Adam's singles this season, and they're really addicting (Mad World, Ring of Fire, Feeling Good...). The whole family loves him. Well, except for my 13-year-old son. LOL. (But he loved him five years ago. = )
Lol we think alot a like on that. I was going through the song lists in my head for Kris that might work well with his voice and was thinking of Thin Lizzy, Blind Melon, Kings-X, Spin Doctors, maybe a couple of Kansas songs(he would really have to stretch out for that) "Sparks of the Tempest" "Point of No Return" he could maybe handled good, a couple of Night Ranger songs, some of Paul Kantner-Craig Chaquico type Jefferson Starship songs(JS probably would have been the best route for him), and possibly a couple Neal Young or Warren Zevon type songs. I would have said Styx but he blew it on the duet so no point in going there again. Once he gets out of the Dave Matthews-Coldplay wheelhouse he seems lost.
Kris has had a couple of really brilliant moments on the show but he seems to have plateaued and is doing the same thing for the last four weeks. Props for him grabbing and electric guitar and playing it well but it was just a good vocal and “Come Together” is not a song that is going to blew people away. And that is what you need at the final four performance wise.
Try Hollister-girls her age love their stuff. Or maybe Abercrombie. Old Navy has cute stuff too. (I even shop there!)
If there are screaming guitars and a screaming vocal, she's in. The rest of the family groans whenever he hits the stage.
My prediction: Adam loses the final, because whenever Danny gets booted all his votes will go to Chris, or vice versa.
Also Delia’s has stuff for the tweens...so says my fashion conscious daughter...I buy jeans there because I’m short and it’s the only place I can find 26 and 28 inch inseams...hate the low rise though!
Very succinct and sums it up nicely.
I said this last week, too. I wish he would just sing. No crazy notes, no yelling, no runs- just singing. Someone last night mentioned how Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, and a few others also hit those sort of notes. That's true, but they don't do it in every single song.
Vocally it reminds me of a few seasons ago when Ace Young would put a falsetto part in every song. It's nice once in a while, but it gets old after a while.
