It's supposedly a pure viewer vote. The judges, Simon at least, probably see the raw totals after the results shows, and can often read the trends to predict a winner in advance.
There's also the weasel-language in the fine print shown during the credits that allows 19E to exclude votes that they deem come from "robo-calling". I imagine that they've selectively enforced this on occasion to tip a close vote one way or the other.
For the most part, though, the judges and producers limit their manipulation to simply influencing the voters, whether through the post-performance comments, performance order, or other "production" issues (lighting, backdrops, etc.).

Agree on the feeling Simon must see something. After all he’s the producer, and it would help him to know how things are going by means of viewership/interest for upcoming shows/seasons.
Seems Adam didn’t have near the crowds that Danny and Kris generated. And, oh so fitting...he sings a Michael Jackson song! lol
Ok, this sounds like a plan. How much original stuff is sold. What is usually the time frame, because he has to do the idol thing first, so when can he release his own stuff?
My thought is Chris will sell more than Adam over all.

I believe none of them can do anything until the Idol tour is over at the end of the summer. Usually the winner releases their album first, promoted by 19E. I believe the others can go with the same if they are offered or seek out their own deals elsewhere. As someone posted earlier, one is almost better off not winning if they want to have more control over what they are going to record. The winner has to pretty much do as they are told by Idol.

I did not mean that she should be a pop singer; that’s what I meant by well managed. She shouldn’t be made to sing “pop”, her voice is way too big for that and certainly not mediocre enough for pop.
I truly hope she finds her own niche and is able to create some great music. She has such a gift!

Here's the thing about Kris. He has the most original artistry. In my book anyone who take take a song like "Ain't No Sunshine" and arrange it the way he did is tops in my book. Honestly, I don't know if Kris arranges his songs, but every other song he does is original and he performs it uniquely well.
Kris might not be the most talented singer, but he makes me want to listen to his arrangements.
This is what I've heard, but never have been sure this is the way it works, but it would make sense.
