Sun and Shadow

As I look from the isle, o'er its billows of green,
To the billows of foam-crested blue,
Yon bark, that afar in the distance is seen,
Half dreaming, my eyes will pursue:
Now dark in the shadow, she scatters the spray
As the chaff in the stroke of the flail;
Now white as the sea-gull, she flies on her way,
The sun gleaming bright on her sail.

Yet her pilot is thinking of dangers to shun,--
Of breakers that whiten and roar;
How little he cares, if in shadow or sun
They see him who gaze from the shore!
He looks to the beacon that looms from the reef,
To the rock that is under his lee,
As he drifts on the blast, like a wind-wafted leaf,
O'er the gulfs of the desolate sea.

Thus drifting afar to the dim-vaulted caves
Where life and its ventures are laid,
The dreamers who gaze while we battle the waves
May see us in sunshine or shade;
Yet true to our course, though the shadows grow dark,
We'll trim our broad sail as before,
And stand by the rudder that governs the bark,
Nor ask how we look from the shore!

Oliver Wendell Holmes

I was thinking, Amy, if I can just drink 14 more cups of coffee I might make it onto the exercycle. ;º)

Hi ya'll (that's Southern). Dropping in to say hello and to say that my computer has died. I'm borrowing Jack's for the moment. I'm doing okay except the leg still bothers me. Still don't know what the problem is. Could be because I haven't gone to a doctor. I've completely lost all faith in doctors. You go and spend a lot of money and they still can't tell you what's wrong. So I just go along day to day. I'm too busy to worry much about it.

The community theatre group that I helped start is planning on doing "Hansel and Gretel" in June and guess who gets to direct it? How do I get into these messes? The play will have a gazillion kids in it. Aggghhhhhh!

I'm completely behind on everyone's news. I pray that all is well with you guys.

Oh, I don't think I told you that I proof-read a book for Carry_Okie. It will be coming out as a Net Book before long. I'm excited about it. I won't say any more about it until he is ready to publish.

We are ub revival at one of Jack's churches this week, so I have to run along now.

Hugs all around.

Good to see you, Nan! Please let a doctor judge your leg. You might get lucky.

Congrats on directing! Hope you have a blast!

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

March 15, 2009
Reaching Up To Heaven
The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. —Romans 8:26

I see children reach up their hands to their mothers, eager to get their attention. It reminds me of my own efforts to reach up to God in prayer.

The early church stated that the work of the aged is to love and to pray. Of the two, I find love to be the most difficult, and prayer to be the most confusing. My infirmity lies in not knowing the exact thing for which I ought to pray. Should I pray that others will be delivered from their troubles—or that their troubles will go away? Or should I pray for courage to carry on through the difficulties that belabor them?

I’m comforted by Paul’s words: “The Spirit also helps in our weaknesses” (Rom. 8:26). Here the apostle uses a verb that means, “to help by joining in an activity or effort.” God’s Spirit is joined to ours when we pray. He intercedes for us “with groanings which cannot be uttered.” He is touched by our troubles; He sighs often as He prays. He cares for us deeply—more than we care for ourselves. Furthermore, He prays “according to the will of God” (v.27). He knows the right words to say.

Therefore, I needn’t worry about getting my request exactly right. I need only to hunger for God and to reach up, knowing that He cares.

O God, too weak and worn for words, I shrink
From trials that deeply wound, and yet to think
Your Holy Spirit helps me as I pray
And gives a voice to what I cannot say! —Gustafson

When praying, it’s better to have a heart without words than words without heart.

Good Sunday Morning, Mayor
How wonderful that He does not need eloquence to hear our
prayers.
Thank you for Our Daily Bread today and everyday.
Have a blessed Lord's Day.

Good Morning Mayor, and did this speak directly to me this
morning! I have been at the point in “ how should I pray”
and all I could come up with is “ YOU know Oh God”” You know”!!

A blessed Sunday to you...
Polly

After several rainy cloudy days, I believe our skies will be clearing
today.Praise God for the rain

I think that is an issue with many people including me at times. How do I Pray? He does know all our needs and the desires of our heart. But one thing we all have to remember is it is for His glory, for His purpose.

That’s tough sometimes, but He knows better than us. We as humans with free will have choices to make and as long as we choose Him and His will, He will guide us.

I am guilty, as are most of us.
