Stop eating foods containing peanut butter, FDA says
MSNBC ^

Posted on 01/20/2009 5:11:05 PM PST by ff52051

The Food and Drug Administration is asking consumers to temporarily stop eating all foods containing peanut butter - this, as investigators work to find the source of a deadly salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter and peanut butter paste. So far, more than 470 people in 43 states have gotten sick. At least 90 people have been hospitalized and six have died. Investigators are focusing on bulk tubs of peanut butter produced at the Peanut Corporation of America's Georgia facility. Its products were distributed to nursing homes and to food companies.

You said — “I thought it was posted earlier that the jars were ok but to avoid the crackers.”

I thought I saw that, too — but now, I don’t know if I want to buy a jar. I was planning on doing it, too. I’ll hold off...

Don’t take my Jif away! Is this just a ruse to raise prices on an economical protein source during a difficult economy?

Have a half eaten jar of Skippy peanut butter in the house, and some Glucerna Bars. So far so good, all the news kind of takes the appetite away.

MSNBC is stupid. The FDA is NOT asking people to stop eating peanut butter products. Below is the actual warning to consumers from there website.

Based on available information, FDA and CDC recommendations include:

For Consumers

FDA has created a searchable list of products and brands associated with the expanded PCA recall. This list is available on the FDA website at:
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm and will be updated on a regular basis as additional sub recalls occur and information is received by FDA from the industry.

Because identification of products subject to recall is continuing, the FDA urges consumers to first visit FDA’s website to determine if commercially-prepared or manufactured peanut butter/peanut paste-containing products (such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream) are subject to recall. If consumers do not find the product of interest on FDA’s website they may wish to call the toll-free number listed on most food packaging or visit the company’s website.

If consumers cannot determine if their peanut butter, peanut butter/peanut paste-containing products or institutionally-served peanut butter may contain PCA peanut butter/peanut paste, we recommend that they do not consume those products. Efforts to specifically identify products subject to the PCA recall and to continuously update consumers are ongoing.

Do not eat products that have been recalled and throw them away in a manner that prevents others from eating them.

Persons who think they may have become ill from eating peanut butter are advised to consult their health care providers.

From the FDA's site:

Major national brands of jarred peanut butter are not affected by the PCA recall. PCA does not sell peanut butter directly to consumers. PCA only sells peanut butter to institutions and food manufacturers (some of which use it as an ingredient in other processed/packaged foods). Some food manufacturers use PCA peanut butter or peanut paste in baked or processed foods, such as crackers, cookies, cakes or ice cream to name a few.

Salmonella is usually associated with chicken or eggs. I hope this doesn't turn out like the tomato scare. How many foods were we told to avoid before they isolated the bug?

I’ve got two big jars of PB from Sam’s. We’ve been eating them and will continue to eat them. I guess ruining the tomato industry this past year wasn’t enough.
