Trent Hamm at thesimpledollar.com writes in his January 3 entry (excerpted) : "For those of you who havent heard the news yet, on February 10, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act comes into effect. One of the major changes that this program will bring into play is a mandate that everything sold for children 12 and younger will have to be tested for lead and phthalates, and anything that isnt tested (or that fails) will be considered hazardous and cannot be sold. Read more about the CPSIA at the L.A. Times and some interesting blog commentary from the fashion industry. Where things get interesting is with used products. Consider your local resale and thrift shop. Currently, all of their secondhand childrens clothes will have to be tested for lead and phthalates. Given that many such stores arent high-income operations - many are nonprofits - these shops simply cannot afford to do the testing on the childrens clothes on their shelves.
So what happens? Most thrift shops are currently not accepting any childrens clothing at all. Sometime in the next month or so, all thrift shops will have to clear all of their childrens clothing from the shelves and send them to the landfill. (Its worth noting that the Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering a reprieve for products made from natural materials, which would exempt some clothes, but not nearly all clothes"
From reading the whole article, it appears that this will apply to used/new products that are sold at garage sales, thrift stores, ebay, etc. The discussion that follows the blog posts lists going to the sites of the National Bankruptcy Day or the Handmade Toy Alliance Site to write your congressman/woman.

Well, the end goal of Socialism IS to have us living like animals in farm-like settings, naked, dirty, slaving away for ‘the good of all’ and dependent upon Mother Government for our daily slop.
This stuff drives me absolutely INSANE! Grrrrrr!
>>>>I drilled mine out to receive a better shower. Many other FReepers have done the same.<<<<<<
Oh sure. Of course. I pulled the plastic restrictors from mine.
There is a pdf file at this site that explains this new “law”
http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/cpsia.html
“Now I think the family carried cystic fibrosis. There is no confirmation of this. It is personal observation and the scant information of how the children died. Both were boys and were the only boys.”
My mother was the youngest of 14 children (9 boys 5 girls), born in 1930. None of the boys lived beyond their first year of life. My mother remembered that the doctor told my grand mother that she’d “never raise a boy”. My sister, a nurse, had asked fellow health professionals what may have been the cause and why it affected only boys. She was never able to come up with any reasonable conclusion.
Nothing wrong with living in farm-like settings.
Why don’t we declare a ban on all Chinese imports Every single thing, for at least 10 years. Tell them to get their act together and MAYBE we will allow trade with them again in the future. I mean really! They’ve permeated everything with products that are deadly toxic, from toys to dog food, clothes, milk, Enough! There no excuse for it in this day and age.
“Dont you just love it when laws like this sneak up on you? Everyone freaked about lead in toys from China...Wanted the Government to do something...Boom~There it is...”
Thank you! You’re one of the few that ‘gets it!’

Read the letter at the above link and you will be relieved to know that the ban only applies to clothing manufactured after the effective date.
“Americans have accepted federally mandated low-flow showerheads and 1.6 gallon toilet tanks.”
Mandatory Recycling Programs
Mandatory CF light bulbs for rental property owners
Seatbelt laws
Helmet laws
Speed limits on highways
Registering our guns
Micro-chipping our livestock
I could go on, but you know where this is going...
I buy almost everything I wear at thrift stores, but a law regarding items for under-12s won’t affect me.
I think I’ve only bought one boys’ coat secondhand. People usually give us coats, if we don’t have one to pass down.
My granddaughter was voted best dressed at her middle school last year and it was because she has tons of clothes, most bought at yard sales and thrift shops.
“Nothing wrong with living in farm-like settings.”
Especially for me; I’m the Farmer. :)
Thanks. Looks like the only thing left is to hound Congresscritters until they change this part of the law. Pelosi: 202-225-4965 Reid: 202-224-3542, McConnell: 202-224-3542, Boehner: 202-225-4000.

Don't bother. Somebody didn't do the research before they hit the alarm button. The ban only applies to clothing manufactured after the effective date.
I haven’t read all 60+ pages of this legislation, but so far I’ve seen only where it speaks to the restriction of lead and phthalates. Where do these two chemicals come into play with fabric or fibers used in clothing?
Thanks. We need to call Reid and McConnel anyway about not seating Stewart Smalley. Or tell them to take the next 365 days off.
If the states get money for enforcement, NEW YORK will be on it like stink on youknowwhat! I like the paper plate idea for garage sales!
From Wikipedia (as unreliable source as that may be): “The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 is a US law signed on August 14, 2008 by President George W. Bush. The legislative bill was known as HR 4040, sponsored by Congressman Bobby Rush”
Bobby Rush...of the “you better not hang or Lynch Blago’s latest appointment [because he's black]” side of the Chicago-thug-politics fence.
