So why is Apple doing better than Dell, a notoriously low-end OEM? Apple's support is even still in the US, as opposed to unintelligible "try reinstalling the OS" support from India. Sure it costs more, but it's customer satisfaction that plenty of people are willing to pay for.
All these reasons together are why Apple consistently tops OEM customer satisfaction surveys by a wide margin. I wonder what kind of support you get from Psystar when their cheap beige boxes have problems.
That’s a Cimarron, right? I remember those, a Chevy Cavalier with a Cadillac badge. Total freakin’ disaster to the Cadillac brand. I hear they have a picture of one of these at Cadillac with “Lest we forget” or something like that written on it.
Cadillac tried again with the Catera, a re-badged Opel Omega. But at least the Omega was a mid-range sedan in Germany, you could spec one out to compete with the price, features and performance of a lower-range Mercedes. It didn’t sell too well either, but still a lot better than the Cadvalier.
“Apple is 24th in brand value in the world, worth over 13 billion dollars (just the brand name alone, not the company). That’s up from about 9 billion and 39th place in 2006. It’s 8th in the electronics industry, behind the likes of Microsoft, IBM and Nokia and ahead of Sony, Dell and eBay. Overall they’re even ahead of Nike and Pepsi.
Apple won’t go low-end because they can’t guarantee the quality, product cohesiveness and marketing that goes with the brand, and that would reduce brand value. A point or two in marketshare means nothing if it doesn’t come with extra value or profit.”
So brilliant it was worth repeating.
Let's look at some other jumps downmarket in dennisw's vein... none of which have ever worked out well.
Colt Double Eagle Pistol
1975 Indian ME100 Motorcycle
The Admiral electronics brand - Zenith used it to sell downmarket TVs. Seen a Zenith set lately?
Post-1963 Winchester Model 70s - when they decided to go downmarket and cheap. The Winchester plant in New Haven CT is closed now.
You guys are just jealous of Los Hermanos Psystar and the other clone makers they have inspired, Heck, uncle Stevie is jealous too. He was once like them. Brash, creative, hi-IQ, and with hair on his head
Not particularly. Psystar’s Hackintosh-for-pay line was set up, more or less, to be a lawsuit factory.
It is almost certainly being bankrolled by Microsoft.
As for the “other clone makers” - *where*??? There don’t seem to be any.

Ah, yes. Argentina. That huge and bustling market, so world-influencing.
Not.
Look, Psystar is right down there with the SCO scammers in terms of corporate behavior and lawsuit baiting. I’d have more sympathy if they actually had a better legal theory behind them - their current one is laughable.
And as far as Argentina clone makers? Uncle Stevie's law doesn't reach that far. Apple clones will become popular on the "beyond lawsuit" periphery. The clone knowledge base will grow there. One day Apple will give up and just authorize Psystar USA type clone makers after forcing a decent level of quality control on them
Nonsense. These Florida boys have a very good Silicon Valley lawyer working for them
Too bad the trial isn't in Florida where it should be
It would be an automatic win for Psystar
Hm... that’s the same logic that was used by the Nintendo cloners.
So, seen a Nintendo clone lately? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Nintendo....
Ancient history. The world has changed and so have the courts
Just wait until the clone makers learn to hack motherboards to allow a hardware hack that allows OSX to load without any hassle. So far it’s just software hacks
This will happen outside the USA where Stevie’s lawyers are powerless
Mmmh, got news for you - Apple has patents filed all over the world *and* most countries have patent reciprocity these days.
Mmmh, got news for you - Apple has patents filed all over the world *and* most countries have patent reciprocity these days.........
In this rotten economy I doubt a foreign court will rule for a rich Yankee company. Not on patents
Yeah, the whole anti-trust angle was idiotic.
On principle I agree with elements of Psystar’s case. A software vendor shouldn’t be able to tell you where you can run their software you lawfully purchased at retail. And you should be able to hack it to run on a commodity box using the interoperability exception of the DMCA.
Of course Psystar is doing a bit more than just those two things, but I’d like to see Psystar win on those because it would benefit us all.
