Dolly, my son and his girlfriend went to see ‘Australia’ the other night. He said he really liked it but it was long. Of course he didn’t mind that. Is that what you said? I forget if you mentiioned the length of the movie or not!

They are quite easily made. I do so enjoy them with tea. I'd get married again if I could find a pleasant Irish Lady who makes them for afternoon tea regularly. I might even move to Ireland for that pleasantry. ;-)

Ireland, hmmm. I always think of England and scones. I guess both though. :) We had them for high tea on the Orient Express in London, and I have a friend here who's not English, but has always spent a lot of time there - she always has scones at her cocktail parties. I guess I just never thought of them as being traditionally an Irish biscuit.

Yes, a good soup day today - yesterday, too. I like cornbread with veggie soup, too.

Just got back from buying groceries and I'll be making a big pot of vegetable/beef soup tomorrow. We have had in the last couple of weeks: potato soup, split pea soup, blackeyed pea soup (tonight) and tomorrow it will be veg/beef. :) I don't like French Onion soup, or any fish chowders, but just about every other kind!

Billie, I listen to this song every day on my Alan Jackson Christmas CD and on another bluegrass CD. And now I can listen here. I really love “And the Angels Cried.” Thanks for posting the lyrics, and that sweet illustration.

Oh, I'm so glad it's a favorite of yours, Dita. I can listen to it and Clay Aiken's "Mary, Did You Know" over and over, and next Wednesday (I think) we'll be hearing another of my favorites, but you may be surprised who's singing it. :) (yes, this is a tease LOL)

I believe the Cardinals love cold weather.

Which could explain why every Christmas Card with snow also has a cardinal somewhere. :)

Yummm-meeee. I have now got the “concept.” Thanks very much, Billie. I never ever get tired of potatoes and the various ways they can be prepared. I will let you know when I make these!!!

So you're going to invite me for dinner! YES! :)

I'm glad you got the 'concept' - it's not something I could actually write a recipe for, and if it hadn't been a 'dinner party' staple in our family, I wouldn't have known how to 'do' them either. :)

Scones are actually of Scottish origin, I think. But I prefer the Irish lilt in spoken word, over the ‘stops’/swallowed sounds of the Scottish brogue. [Now where is my asbestos suit? ...]

A Difficult Season

This is a most difficult season,
We've traveled a distance this year.
I'm growing increasingly worried,
My dear wife and I are in fear.

Our journey has been quite a hard one,
And others have passed us in haste,
If we are to find some comfort,
We haven't a moment to waste.

But she could give birth any minute,
This motion is not a good thing.
We'll need to rest long when we get there,
And we'll need all the coin we can bring.

This traveling back to my hometown,
Means that I and my child will share,
This place of birth and our kinship,
With others who dwell about there.

The town is decidedly crowded,
There's not a room to be had.
The innkeeper lets us take shelter,
In a stable nearby. It's not bad.

The earthy smells are a comfort,
Somewhat like a scent of new wood,
As a carpenter, I know I'll rest easy,
If my wife will agree that it's good.

I would think it could be a bit festive,
With a pine bough to sweeten the air,
And a candle or lamp, to keep out the night damp,
But I sit on the straw and just stare.

For beyond the smoke of our camp-fires,
I can see a bright star in the sky,
The heavens may have their works revealed,
But I cannot spare them my eye.

For my wife is finding comfort,
In the straw of our rude little space,
And so, like it or not, I'm preparing,
To welcome our child in this place.

So a food trough becomes a first cradle,
As he comfortably makes it his own,
All swaddled about, with his face shining out,
He can reign like a king on his throne.

When I get to a place I can work at,
I'll make a good cradle, and sound,
A carpenter's son shouldn't have to accept,
Some rough sticks in a bad part of town.
