What happened yesterday - 11/08/2008? [Update at post number 207]

Posted on 11/09/2008 5:46:59 AM PST by reg45

Question: What happened to FreeRepublic yesterday? It was unavailable? I was beginning to suffer from truth withdrawal syndrome.

It relates to taking a thought or concept a little too far.

It started with Happy Days where they kept trying to make the Fonz more cool. They eventually had him being pulled behind a speed boat on skis, wearing his leather coat jumping a tank of sharks.

I think we have reached that point here where there is somehow a difference between vanities on college football and why the site went down because one is important and something people care about and the other is just FreeRepublic.

"What is a “vanity” thread?"

It's when somebody gets a brain fart, and instead of posting their two sentence comment to an existing thread that pertains to that same subject, they decide to post a whole new thread.

Then they better have an army of about 50M expendables. Oh, wait, it is called a national civilian defense force, mostly made up of young and dumb libdolts. Oh well.

In all seriousness, I want to know what happened, too. Free Republic wasn’t the only conservative site having problems yesterday. Daily Kooks and Dummies Underground were working just fine, though. Dry run? Or was Mr. Robinson ill as gas been posited? I actually prefer the former. We conservatives vote based on thought rather than emotion, but that does not mean we lack emotion. Quite the opposite. Still waters run deep, and Mr. Robinson is one of the places those waters run to. In other words, we do care, and that is not just lip service.

PS Any non-mod vanity police posters on this particular thread can FOAD. Any mod vanity police are, of course, respected. It is Mr. Robinson’s house, and those he cedes authority too are deserving of respect and deferrence while we are in his house.

"Will we have a choice of six different menu items for each meal plus snacks?"

Of course not!! And NO SOUP FOR YOU!! I hear they'll be flying in Andrew Zimmern, who'll prepare his favorite bizarre, exotic treats for us. Yum, yum!

Personally, I have no problem with vanity threads, if I.m not interested in the subject, I don’t click.

The alternate site was not that good, very few posts I saw, like 4 or 5.

A forum doesn't magically appear all on its own, for your personal benefit and enjoyment. It takes the participation of lots of people to create. You could have helped make it happen.

If you'd stuck around a while at altFreeRepublic yesterday, you would have seen it growing by the hour as more and more Freepers found their way there.

A couple of us went to the Yahoo group and posted the URL so others could find us. Jelibn took the responsibility to put up a proper forum, all on his own, so that we had somewhere to organize our discussions. Much, much better than the "group" platform over at Yahoo.

So, did you find someplace to gather with other Freepers yesterday, besides the dreaded Yahoo group?

AntiIdiotarian Rottweiler, Michelle Malkins Email, SlickBarry.com, StopObama.com and Obama Watch

Coincidence?????????

What is a “vanity” thread?

A vanity thread is what results when a person posts a thread for a thought they had that could easily have been posted as a mere comment on any of a number of preexisting threads. They are annoying because they are usually redundant- take for example the multitude of threads on the rumors about Palin. Every one of them could simply have been posted to the first thread on the Palin rumors. These things are called vanities because the most annoying of these posts are by vain people who think their thoughts are so original they need a separate thread when in fact there is nothing original about them.

I think this thread is the first thread about yesterday's the latest server problem so it's not a redundant thread. It also does not really qualify as a vanity since curiosity rather than ego was the reason for posting it.

Someone else has probably answered your question though, so I'm in violation of the etiquette rule requiring us to read the entire thread before posting. Oops.

Just what is your beef with intelligent, and like-minded people opening up discussions with each other on this board?

If the so-called “vanities” were so un-wanted by the owner and the mods, they’d be banished completely.

Personally, because of the layout of this site, I would think that they should all go in the Chat folder, but that’s just my take on it. I haven’t yet seen the owner make a public statement to that effect. If he has, please let me know.

I don’t have a problem with vanities. If the subject matter doesn’t catch my eye, I don’t open them.

I don't have a problem with vanity threads either; I think they're fun.

What I have a problem with is people posting to me instead of the person who actually rattled the cage, usually thinking I'm an easier target for them to practice looking tough on and then acting all shocked and indignant when they find out I'm anything but an easy target.

Ciao! :)

That's one of my major pet peeves. Someone makes a post, I respond with "Agreed" and some coward unloads on me, rather than the original poster.

And then when you nip them for it, they respond in one of two ways:

1. Apologize, because they genuinely made a mistake. (Decent person.)

2. Howl with indignation, usually accompanied by flinging personal insults. (Whiney coward.)

LOL

I come here to read news from various sources- be it the msm or from the mind of a freeper. That the site was down all day is newsworthy.

Correct. Have the mods posted such a thread? If not, this thread would serve that purpose.

BTW no answer after 74 posts and counting.

There's an answer to "What happened?" right here at post 11, where a useful link to an alternative beyone the yahoo site we already know is also supplied :

From what I gather the ISP itself went into some sort of identity crisis and brainlock. I picked up some snippets that cannot be confirmed that the whois server or ISP might have been the victim of an attack virus, a basic but effective one.

Bookmark this in case FR goes down again, its the alt site.
