I love free republic. I thought I would leave after the election, but I think I'm addicted.

All the more reason FR should strive for better credibility by avoiding knee-jerk, hysteria-driven, feeding-frenzy tinfoil stuff that has recently been posted.

It’s up to us Freepers to help maintain FreeRepublic’s credibility.

IMO, please.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/05/hitwise-ranks-election-traffic-to-news-sites/

The chart lists FreeRepublic as #19. The listing shows FR to be #22. I don’t get it.

Wow, if CNN and MSNBC got that much more traffic than anyone else, no wonder Obama won. Most of the country/world is feeding off of those liberal sites.

Sad.

One of the things I love about this site, is that there aren’t any ads of obviously liberal hot girls wearing conservative t-shirts. I’m not gay but I find those annoying.

Hold the phone a second. "Liberal Hot Girls" is oxymoronic.

The thing is FR has always been portrayed that way. I was reading a book called the elements of journalism, when I saw a mention of FR and a post in 2000 after the Waco incident. The posts by the people in the thread we told to be crazy by the author (well he specifically said if you didn't want the news to be presented by people with half cocked theories) that journalism would have to be revived.

(I actually though it was a well articulated way of solving Journalist problems when I read it, but I will have to read it again now)

Truth be told, I can't tell if the discourse has become worse or better (been here 4 months) but I still know as much as my Journalism professor, and way more than my classmates from FR, and due to the tinfoil hat-ness of this site, it's accomplishments (thought it's name is never mentioned) I've heard about all through out my journalism class (Bush papers, Dan rather, Swift boating).

... obviously liberal hot girls ...

Dude, you need to get a life and get out more. Just how do you determine that they are liberal from a a modeling photo wearing modest clothing? Would you prefer that they were wearing burkas?

My apologies if I offended you. I just miss the old days of the 2004 and 2000 elections.

Oh, I agree with you that Free Republic is a good source of information, and that the site has made an impact on political history (especially the Swift Boat thing, which still seems to rankle many Democrats).

I just am getting the impression that more and more of the people left here live in some sort of self-created cocoon or bubble to insulate themselves from reality and the real world. I returned here yesterday (just to read, it turns out), and several things struck me.

Firstly, I was shocked at the large number of freepers who seemed to actually believe that McCain was going to win the election. Considering the polls, there is no way that that could have happened unless there was a widespread 'Wilder Effect' (which I'm betting many freepers believe never existed - note, I believe that the effect is either gone or miniscule now, but did exist at one time; and that today there might be 'reverse Wilder Effect' from people who hide their views from racist loved ones).

Bush, the tanking financial system and economy, and the two wars drawing money from the government (even though both wars are justified, they are costly, largely because of Bush's inept management) are what cost McCain the election, not blacks voting for a black or other race-based things. The Democratic candidate, was bound to win. This was borne out by the Congressional races, all white against white, where many Republicans were tossed out of office just because they had an (R) behind their names. The Republican was almost definitely going to lose regardless of the candidate (of either party). That so many freepers were unable to see this is what I found so astonishing.

Secondly, within the hour or so I was reading through various posts, I also saw several times when some freeper stated that they no longer watched Fox News because Fox's turned liberal (paraphrasing). I get the impression that many of these people are the type to just watch and read news that they want to see/hear, and that fits their political ideology. They surround themselves with conservative media the same way a bad leader surrounds himself with a bunch of yes men. And then they get surprised when reality doesn't match their perception - or get beheaded/tossed out of office.

And I think that the two are linked. Because they envelope themselves with conservative media which tells half-truths and even lies at least as much as liberal media does, and then gullibly believe that without going to liberal media to see how the other side is countering, they put themselves at a disadvantage. My philosophical view is that people should expose themselves to the full spectrum of media: right and left, and what's in between. Even going beyond linearly into two and three dimensions: not just right and left, but social conservative, fiscal conservative, libertarian conservative, social liberal, socialist, and combinations like fiscal-libertarian conservative. With the Internet, there's a lot of news and views out there. People should be informed, and freepers (who obviously have a connection to the Internet) have the means to be informed easily at their disposal.

If their faith in conservatism is strong, then reading/watching liberal media isn't going to change that, and they'd be doing themselves and conservatism a world of good.

Sorry for rambling; I got carried away. And the race parts weren't directed at you, Toki, but at the large numbers of freepers who might be reading this post whose views on the state of race relations in this country are - in my opinion - extremely foolhardy.

Nice Post! Yes I agree, that FR has defiantly become a cocoon of politics, but I don’t agree with the polls part. We thought that the polls were oversampling democrats by a large shot, and most were, as proven by who was right, but we over estimated how many conservatives were turning against the party.
I have to admit though I have been more entranced by Free republic, just because I couldn’t stand all the lies that the MSM was telling. I just wanted to avoid it (I actually ended up avoiding watching the news all together because of that fact). And trust me I see it all the time as a communication major. I won’t even touch MSNBC usually cause of that, though I know I’ll have to suck it up when I graduate and read it all. But your right, to keep balanced, (and to keep up with any misrepresentations the MSM does,) we should be vigilant.

Sorry to add on:

Plus, most Freepers are utterly addicted to this place, and I swear the election intesified by tenfold for everyone.

(I did not really consider the Bradley effect would even effect it at all, I just thought it was over sampling, I really wasn’t able to see that it wasn’t doing it to much... then again I have been learning about polling here and Realclearpolitics.com for the first time)

No apology required, its just the word “New Order” sounds like RINO/CINO talk. I think that we can all agree that the go along get along crowd has been totally discredited. You do not compromise with the rats you crush them into the dirt. We must distort, criticize, criminalize every thing they do, in short act just like them. O-boo-mu must be mocked everyday, every misstep pointed out.

I started lurking on FR in 2004, and thought the information and posts quite responsible back then. I learned a great deal.

There doesn’t appear to as many thoughtful, knowledgable folks posting these days as back then.

So then what do you think has caused FR to lose some of the responsible discussion it had before?
