The Roman stadium where Emperor Antoninus Pius staged Rome's version of the Olympic Games will be open this weekend for the first time in almost 500 years.
Archaeologists have so far excavated half of the stadium, which was built of volcanic rock around 142 A.D. near Naples, and was buried by volcanic ash in 1538 following an eruption by Mount Nuovo, ANSA reported Friday.
"Like the great Italian culture capitals of Florence, Venice, Rome and Urbino, Pozzuoli can also take advantage of its illustrious past, which is reflowering from the bowels of the earth," said Pozzuoli Mayor Pasquale Giacobbe.
In 1931, a road was built through the middle of the ancient stadium, which complicated the excavation project, the Italian news service reported.

Maybe Maximus wielded his gladiator sword in this arena.
Cool! What do 50 yardline tickets go for? :-}
Maybe someone *named* Maximus...
I heard they also unearthed the records of the Naples Cardinals where they had not won a championship since 100 AD.
Hey, nice! Thanks! I’ve been reading about the towns buried by Vesuvius 79 AD, and the lesser-known ones, though smaller, seem to have more interesting stuff left in them. Although official looting expeditions ripped apart the theater of Herculaneum, there are loads of things — wood doors, some carbonized, some not, still swing on their hinges; some local games were in progress, this is known because the equipment they were about to use had been placed in the appropriate spots.
Pozzuoli !
Wow, that is cool. Thanks for posting.
It’s amazing to think of something as large as that was just buried and is now unearthed. Wow!
Wow!!! What a beauty!!! I would love to see it in person.
Unfortunately, for most of us, one drives through Naples at 10,000 MPR or faster to get from point A to point B. Naples is a dangerous place.
Thank you for the article.
