Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!
Er...decidedly.
OK, got laundry pretty much done, house vacuumed, did a buncha guitar practicing, backed up my music (it’d been six months or more...eek!), did about ten notebook pages of writing, and successfully ignored Tam throughout.
Am I good or am I good?
The drama, btw, was in the form of the first significant rainfall in the area in about two months, which chose to occur today while our furniture was being loaded onto the truck... which lead to the move taking a bit longer than expected, but it all worked out. Yay!
WooHoo! Y’all are homeowners!! Have you gotten a lawnmower yet? ;o)
The first picture shows, from left to right, the Lancer, H&K (reviewed earlier, but shown for comparison purposes), Tangodown, and Tapco.
I aligned the top edge of all the magazines with a straightedge, so you can see the variations in length and curvature. Everyone has their own idea of what works best.
I disassembled the Tapco, thinking it might be a candidate for Wolff extra-power springs. I got a big surprise when I compared the factory spring to a GI spring, and a Wolff extra-power.
The Tapco spring is a couple of loops shorter than the others, and doesn't use the last little "half loop" to attach the spring to the follower. I might experiment in cutting off a couple of loops of a surplus GI spring, and see if I can get it to work (gotta keep thinking of spares). The magazine and spring are shorter than the others, which makes me think that thinner magazine walls may allow the double stack of rounds to "squish out" more, making for a shorter stack. I didn't feel like digging out my calipers this late at night and measuring.
I bought the Tangodown because they touted the feature of a perfectly straight upper half, with a "properly curved" lower part. What they didn't mention was the "feature" that the two halves are then glued together, making it impossible to disassemble. Cleaning? Just swish it around in soapy water and let it dry. Concerns about the magazine spring? You're SOL.
This is a top view of the H&K, Tapco, and Tangodown. The white follower of the Tangodown has lots of holes and slots, apparently to let the water out after washing.
I'll test these new magazines some day, and keep the Tapco on my list as a "possible" if I see it on sale for a really good price. The Tangodown seems like a non-starter for me. And the H&K is still the Rolls Royce of M16 magazines. It now looks like a great deal, especially if you can snag one for under $40 each.
I may have a new recoiling bundle of joy on the way soon (I kick myself for not buying the one I saw on the spot), and it will demand its share of magazines, too. So I bought some new Colt 30-rd mags from Ammoman. These will be rebuilt immediately with a Magpul follower and base plate, and Wolff extra-power springs. The GI stainless steel springs won't rust, but they will take a set. I prefer to watch out for rust, and go with the chrome silicon springs that don't set.
Very interested in the rebuilding of the Colt and GI mags with the Wolff extra power springs, magpul follower and base plate. I despise plastic / composite mags. Almost myself kilt right proper using some Canookistan C7 mags once while in middle east.......note to self never trust one !!
Did some needle file work on my Mini’s this week, off with a bug and needed to do something so followed yer path on the well versus the mags.
Welcome Home!
I would like to impart some wisdom that I recently read in a book involving a country falling apart and on the verge of civil war...
I dedicate this to the Ron Paul Isolationist's among us...
When the war gets to the point that you defend your family, your freedom, and your way of life by drawing your weapon at the front door... It's already too late...
No lawnmower yet, but I'm looking at which one I want to get... in the meantime we'll have to hire someone to cut the grass, it's already too long and with the rain we had it will only grow faster.
Hurray & Congrats on NewHouse!
Good Morning NewHouseResidents - If you add a micro-wave and a coffee pot that should about cover basic household plunder. Amazing, the first rain in two months and its your moving day. Wonderful news indeed. OB & LSA
Morning Win-mag : excellent post re the aftermarket magazines. The different radii was eyeopening, not having a rifle of that persuasion I would not have guessed there is that many radii and designs. Thanks.
Morning Gents - Have you all seen the new AR Clone from Ruger? Seems it’s piston driven like the Sig 556 but costs more. It’s good to see another US maker of the AR weaponry in the fray.
Interesting! I can see why the H&K is the “rolls royce” brand. They make some nice stuff, don’t they? We had a friend in Iowa who was an HK fan, his .45 is the only one I ever shot that I could have gotten to like. (But maybe when we get an XD 45 I’ll like that....)
Morning, flowers starting to put on quite the show, columbines and siberian iris in bloom; first daylily bloom; black locust in full bloom all over town, summer isn’t far behind by the calendar. ALthough it was 42 this morning (record 39 IIRC) it’s warming up nicely, should be extra nice all week (till the weekend of course).
It doesn’t feel like spring. I keep thinking I’ve got more time to start seeds indoors.
My coreopsis has buds...woo hoo!!
Which is why I think it's healthy to buy this stuff as a form of deterrence. I have every hope that I will use my ammo to put tiny holes into tiny groups at a not-so-tiny range. And bust the occasional biodegradable jug of water.
Sales of guns and ammo are a sort of daily referendum on people's trust in government, especially this government. For a regime that spends two hours each evening analyzing the day's focus group reports, they're aware of what this signifies. There will be more eyeballs out there looking for some shifty deal from them being slipped by in the dark of the night.
Of course, not all purchases are made in the name of solidarity with EBR owners. As I overhead one guy say, "after I bought my .308 yesterday, my wife sent me back today to buy an AR-15 for her. A new rifle is a lot cheaper than a divorce."
Bwahaha. At least I bought my own EBR...
Our across the street neighbors' 10 yr old son started a lawn mowing bidness last year. He's gotten several families on the block as customers. When we were going to be out of town for a couple of weeks last year, we had him mow ours, while we were gone, so it wouldn't be too shaggy when we returned. We told him not to worry about the grass catcher, that we'd use that when we got back. He used his own mower, and did a good job.
Charcoal grill....meat, red off the bone....and hoomin meds.
Mmmmmmm.....
Great idea - red meat and baked ‘taters (one idaho and one sweet).
