The Hobbit Hole XXXVII - ...Down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed!

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:43:34 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Yeah, but it costs a LOT less than dinner for 4 at our local Chinese place. We’re eating the leftovers tonight along with Hoppin John, and some Braised Kale, for prosperity in the New Year.

I did Kale instead of Collards. They were pretty good! I was reading about kale, and it’s supposed to be some kind of super-antioxidant. I’ll have to cook it again!

You should post recipes... seriesly... I’ve got to make shrimp tempura one of these days. And pork katsu again as soon as I find a nice Japanese food store and get katsu sauce...

Thanks for looking in on the pooches :~)

Barkley had a good time on his undeserved special adventure, I’m glad it was quiet here and not stormy so maybe Homer was not too upset.

As for the barn roof... Well, we’ll fix it... so it’s not dripping on our pony. Has yours stopped?

I didn't have a recipe. I just peeled shrimp, and left the tails on. Then I used a boxed tempura mix, followed the directions, but after I dipped the shrimp into the prepared wet mix, I dipped it again, in panko, then deep fried them. The panko made them nice and crunchy!! I also cut up onion rings, and red and green pepper rings, sliced some zucchini into long angled pieces, and sweet potatoes the same way. I microwaved the sweet potato pieces for a minute or so, just so they wouldn't be too crunchy. I did them first, then did the shrimp after all the veggies were done. It all turned out great.

I was going to make crab rangoon, since most already prepared ones have too much cream cheese and too little crab, but I couldn't find the wonton skins at the grocery store, so I picked up the frozen ones instead. They were pretty good, but I'd still like to try doing some myself, sometime.

Here's a recipe for Tonkatsu/Katsu sauce, from allrecipes.com.

It really was just overcast here today. Little rain early, and then nothing. Homer was more upset by Cisco being a whiny nuisance when I was over there than by anything else.

Most of the dripping in my place has stopped, except for one on-and-off leak right above my kitchen table. Lovely. But the leaking is going away as the snow does.

Now...hopefully we don’t get more. :-\

I use Wordpress and host it on my own domain. If you host on the WordPress domain you can’t run scripts in the sidebar. But other than that, it works pretty well. For me it seems to give the most options for customizing theblog.

It’s been a long time since I’ve worked with Blogger. Never done Typepad.

Very Good — haven’t played CLUE in many years. How did the painting turn out?

We’re hoping that Mr. Jackson got in before the folks left for the weekend. He was cruising around earlier, haven’t seen him so far; and so far so good. It’s gonna get nasty again come Sunday.

It turned out pretty good. I put a second coat on today. The walls and ceiling are done. “Sunroom” seems a bit more yellow than I though. Oh well. It still works. I think I’ll need to repaint the trim, speaking of which...there’s that one wall in the dining room with no baseboard trim so I’ll want to trim that off. I’ll keep the door to the garage white since I’m painting all the trim anyway. Next are the cabinets and the exposed beams (will be painted the same color....some shade of brown to hint of wood.) Maybe tomorrow I’ll strip the paint off one of the cabinet door pulls and see if I want to strip all the cabinet hardware (34 hinges and 18 pulls) or buy new. I’d like to restore the period hardware though. :)

That sounds very nice; the hardware cleaning/stripping takes a lot of time, but the results are usually well worth it. imho.

The color chip may not look like the resulting paint on the wall. :-) Boy, do we know that.

There’s a special place in hell for people who paint hardware. :)

I thought about stripping the cabinets but decided against it.

Stripping the paint off cabinets is a crap shoot. You won’t know if it’s worth it till after it’s done. Plus you shouldn’t be doing in winter, better ventilation is our friend.
