The Hobbit Hole XXXVII - ...Down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed!

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:43:34 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

We don't ever go out for New Year's Eve. We sometimes order takee-outee Chinese, but this year, we prepared it ourselves. We had tempura shrimp and vegetables, grilled teriyaki steak and chicken strips on skewers, and got pkgs of frozen crab rangoon and chicken eggrolls. Yum! At midnight, we opened some sparkling cider for the kids, and SirKit and I each had a glass of wine to toast the New Year.

After that, he continued working on the support wall between the kitchen and den, so he could re-route some gas and plumbing pipes. He'll do that later on today.

It was SO cold and windy in Boston, that they cancelled the fireworks show that they usually have on First Night, but still had crowds somewhere, cause we saw them on TV. First Night is a big deal up here. It's an all day affair with events all over town for families, then concerts in the evening. It was designed to be a non-alcohol event, to counter the idea of getting drunk and driving. I think Boston was the first city to do it, about 25 years ago, and Worcester followed suit the next year. We've never been, because we just don't like being out and about in the cold.

It snowed all day, today, and we got about 6". After that, it was COLD, and got down to about 5 degrees! We just stayed in and enjoyed watching the snow, and tonight we cranked up the fireplace. It was nice and cozy!

Hope your New Year is a great one, LCS!

stop the shouting...

Actually, no post NYEve regrets here. Well, for us anyway (Because of NYE and his last month of inactivity, Jr. will be attending a major prayer meeting today. If it don't take, Luke gets a new room in 6 months.). We went over to a friend's house to help her chaperone her son's (15) first boy/girl party. It was nice and laid back for us. Luke spent the evening with her younger daughter (12) playing video games.

Merry Christmas everyone!

No - I'm not confused, today is finally our Christmas Day! We put off our big family gathering because the snow and icy roads last week, and are finally going to celebrate today. Truck is loaded with presents, it's pouring rain and may be a little nasty out still, but we're goin!

Horses were all put on edge last night by all the fireworks, and so was I... so I was up at midnight, but didn't want to be.

Merry Christmas everyone!

There are no rulz that say you have to celebrate on Dec. 25. Lots of cultures and traditions have other days. Or you could do all twelve.

Have a great day with thefamily. Here's hoping that you've seen the worst of your winter weather for the season.

And, when you get to it next week, Happy New Year!

Well, like we talked about last night, we will be taking Barkley today, but the others will be here. As nasty as it is, the dogs won’t want to be out much, but if you can pop over and let them out once or twice, that would be much appreciated. I guess since it’s so nasty out it’s not going to be much of a play day for Cisco anyhow, and I won’t have the blocks set up to protect the ferals, so it might be easiest to leave him out so you don’t have a bad scene when we aren’t here.

The horses are all on edge. I think they were out all night. They didn’t want to stay in to eat breakfast. Cyn’s got her anxiety problem about the barn again. I think maybe a new branch came down on the roof or something, I dunno. We’re going to take a peek when it gets light, before we go. I think they’re OK, but the mares were cold so we put their warmer blankets on again. If you could just look out and notice if they seem off, or are doing a lot of rolling, and call our cell if they don’t seem right, I’d appreciate it. I’ll be a little worried about them today.

Morning All - Quietest New Year’s that we can recall.

It’s brisk out but the wind’s from the south, not the north.

Downy woodpeckers, thrashers, and blue jays have all been by for their turn at the cedar/suet log or peanuts, as was their preference.

Well, we may have found the problem with the horses. We did have a branch come through the barn roof last night... just the end poking through, probably one that broke last week and just now fell down?? It wasn’t like that when I cleaned stalls yesterday. It’s at least in a corner by the door to pony’s stall so the whole barn won’t be wet, just that corner, but we’ll have to figure out how to fix that over the weekend.

Horses seem more settled in the barn now that it’s light. I think everything is scarier in the dark.

We’ll be leaving here in a few minutes.

Merry New Year and all that!

We spent the evening at a friend’s. The kids were all in and out of the freezing temp and having a blast staying up late. They also got to spend the night, so there was that to be excited about as well.

Heh, yeah they're cranking up the mega-disaster shows about Yellowstone on the Science and Discovery channels. I think we've seen them all.

We were there in 2003, when they had just observed the HUGH bulge under Yellowstone Lake, and one of the areas was blocked off to tourists, because the ground was too hot. It's easy to tell the boundaries of the caldera. When you see the grass struggling to grow, and start seeing little puffs of smoke coming out of the ground, you're in it. We drove all the way through the park one day, down into Wyoming so we could see the Grand Tetons, and you could tell where the caldera ended on the South edge. Fascinating.

I went over between about twelve thirty and one and let ‘em out and hung out a bit. I’ll check back on ‘em in an hour or so here if I don’t see you guys first.

Bummer about the barn roof. :-\

Sounds like a pupu platter, which is what they call it at the local Chinese restaurant -- great idea!

Waiting for the caldera to blow.

So will it be Yellowstone or a mega-comet that gets us in 2012?

There’s been lotsa quakes going on under Yellowstone Lake for the last week or so...yesterday they were talking about harmonic tremors (means magma is on the move....so I’m told). So all the rock jocks are all looking at Yellowstone data.
