I recently discovered the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters. They are wonderful. Light mystery mixed with Egyptian archaeology.
I read a lot of fantasy.
The Secret Country trilogy by Pamela Dean is really good.
The Dragon Knight series by Gordon R. Dickson are good, too.
And I like both the Dragon Companion and Pyromancer series by Don Callander.
For serious book, Soldier of the Great War is my favorite piece of fiction. THUD! is just a whole lot of fun (Fantasy) by Terry Pratchett is brilliant! No SiFi on he list, but Dune and the Foundation trilogy are fantastic. Ender’s Game is amazing.
Path Between the Seas and John Adams both by the same author are about as good non-fiction books you can get.

I would recommend most any of Dean Koontz’s works, but Dark Rivers of the Heart and Seize The Night/Fear Nothing really stand out.

“Fountain Head” and “Atlas Shrugged”, both by Ayn Rand.
They will frighten you in their prophetic accuracy.

Wanted to second the Aubrey/Maturin series, but get the dictionary guide that and names and places encyclopedia or you will be frustrated. This because unless you have a great grasp of geography (I thought I did) and understand the terminology of tall ships you just will be lost.
1776 by David McCullough Is also a fantastic book. Also Paul Reveres’ Ride by David Hackett Fischer.

I am currently reading Dorothy Garlock’s depression-era romances/historical fiction. They are terrific.
Will Thomas just came out with the 4th book in the series. Some Danger Involved is the first. All four books are absolutely first rate.
Written by an American, and even though the book is true to early 1900's London, the humor probably has more of an American sensibility.
I think I read that book 20 years ago and I also remember details.
It was so well written I was wondering if the author actually did travel back in time.

I read the book. I didn’t know it was even a Masterpiece Theatre type thing until the other day. The book was excellent though.
