For example, some people are already writing off most major religions which are based essentially on an Earth-centric model, as never being able to recover from such a crippling body blow. (The Bible makes no mention of other planets or life on other planets.)

But, of course, you’re reluctant to call it a religion so the religious moderator is looking at a standoff.

I'm sure they'll let you discuss whether or not evolution is a religion in the Religion forum any time you want.

Some people believe that religion is a mental security blanket that makes living possible for most people and that it evolved for that purpose.

Yes, I read that earlier today, on a different thread-article that you posted. I thought it was too ridiculous to respond to then, but I'll respond now: The whole premise that the "idea" of religion can "evolve" reeks of Carl Jung, and I thought Jungian philosophy died a much-deserved death several decades ago. Is this a revival of it?

Personally I think there’s nothing wrong with searching for life beyond earth, particularly the microbial kind as it could prove extremely beneficial to our medical tech. Beyond that though, this mission has huge implications for manned space exploration if we can prove that water ice exists on mars.

Such questions got Bruno burned as a heretic. Or Expelled, if you like.

The faithful should see such questions as a gift from God so that they may strengthen their faith. Those of us not blessed with faith can sit back and watch the parade

Then you’ve got three options:

1) They’re pagans to be evangelised and converted, or

2) They’re false angels sent, or placed,to deceive, or

3) The whole religion thing is a pile of pants.

I don’t think there’d ever be enough evidence to make me believe option three over the first two. Heck, there’s enough people on this planet who have never heard of a redeemer to not let that fact faze me too much should it pop up in an alien culture.

The whole premise that the "idea" of religion can "evolve" reeks of Carl Jung

No it reeks of Richard Dawkins. Good guess though. Jung was about archetypes and racial memory. Dawkins was about memes with survival value

There’s a good deal of evidence indicating that Mars was inhabited before the flood. That causes considerably more angst amongst evolutionites than it does amongst Christians.

Done. No doubt about it. NASA said so about a week ago.

You would, however, be faced with the idea that God didn't love the Martians enough to save them from Hell and that all Martians were doomed to hellfire

WHAT evidence that Mars was inhabited?

You must have a different definition of the word “evidence” than the rest of those who use the English language.

Even eternal souls can suffer from the sin of Pride, however... and I am personally guilty, as well.

As CS Lewis says, this must be one BIG SIN, because we SO despise it when we see it in others.

That being said - I still have yet to meet an atheist that wasn’t smug, arrogant, and condescending.

That’s true!

But I think the truly devout Muslim will find a way. He may resembel a bobble-head doll during prayer, but he WILL prevail, because that’s just the kind of people they are.

On the other hand, they may just blame it all on the U.S., kill a few infidels and call it a day.
