The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I hate it that good men like Finley are dying while I sit here and do nothing.

Very nice garden shots, thanks for posting them. Yucca is best viewed from a distance.

Thanks for sharing the very moving article from the paper. We all hope to be worthy of their sacrifice.

Speaking of Yucca. See there on the right where the leaves are slightly higher? That's a new plant.

Should I try to divide it? (if so, when and how) Or just let it grow that way?

The white thing climbing the trellis is pretty.

That’s the limit of my garden-y input.

The white thing climbing the trellis is pretty.

I hate to tell you that it's 1) free standing and 2) about 6-8 ft. in front of the trellis.

Well in my defense, it was before 7 that I posted that and I hadn’t had caffeine...

So HH’ers in other parts of the country: is the main stream media mentioning the fact that large parts of the midwest are very very wet and getting wetter? Record flood levels on some rivers here in Iowa? Not the Mississippi or Missouri, of course, but the Cedar, the Iowa, the Des Moines, the Wapsipinicon... all the local rivers are having a field day.

It’s getting mentioned here, but it’s being overshadowed by the fact that we’ve had almost a week of temperatures in the high 90s (and above yesterday).

Heh... all news is local... from my perspective somewhat warm weather isn’t that much news... not that we’ve had more than two days that hit 90 so far this spring.

Of course when the price of corn doubles again you-all may think it’s news... ;-)

It’s news to be this hot this early in June.

But it’s nice and breezy out this morning. I’m working from home and wish I could be sitting out on the deck. But I’m 1) really working and 2) coordinating car sales/car loans/car transport, etc. (I’m coordinating, Jr’s doing the labor).

These chickens are growing like crazy! I had forgotten how fast they grow!

We’re building cages to put them in...slightly more than one square foot per bird, which is what they get in commercial settings and is ok because these birds don’t like to walk around too much...just enough to get to the waterer and the feeder, you know?

The difference between these birds and the commercial ones is that they will get to have their cages moved to fresh clean grass several times a day and enjoy the shade trees in the back yard. No walking around in their own poop for the entire six weeks of their lives in poorly ventilated buildings.

I intend to just pick up the cages, move them to a fresh location and spray down the previous area with the hose.

What plan do you use? I’m thinking of going with AT&T...our plan is pay as you go and it’s costing us about $70 a month for the three of us and we don’t even use it as much as we’d like...no free minutes or free weekends or anything like that.

We have the family share plan with Verizon. We all ~needed~ phones. So we went with that. Because we renewed after 2 years, Nana’s phone was free. Our Verizon to Verizon calls are free. Jr. and I both have unlimited texting.

We needed to do a lot of this because Mrs. uses her Blackberry for work. Fortunately, she can expense her charges.

Well, so far this morning...

Jr. has had his car towed back to the house. I’m putting it on Craigslist for parts.

Jr. is on his way to

1) apply for a full time job (his uncle called a friend. It’s a “lot boy” position at a dealership. Full time, M-F. It would be a good thing.

2) go with same uncle to look at a car. Uncle will tell him, “you have to get what you need, not what you want.” And he’ll listen to his uncle.

Good work... Hope someone will take the whole car. If not, one of the ‘pull push or drag’ charities will.

The dealership may put him in a position for a bargain too, unless he needs a new car NOW. Would be a good job, hope he gets it.

Good morning, I’ve been striving for, and think I have achieved, normalcy. :~)

Momma kitties came and ate food last night. A good sign, though I didn’t see them.
